Printer recommendations?

I would appreciate some solid recommendations for a new printer—specifically the model type and an expected price range.
My current old Canon is such a money pit that the ink alone costs about $87... which is more than the device itself. Plus, I am done with manual refills.
Help me out... let's keep the prices reasonable... nothing over $500, though I know that sounds steep!!
