Processor comparison: What are the main differences?

Hey, I could really use some help here. Can someone help me rank these processors by raw power and generation? Like, which ones are older and which ones are newer:

1) Pentium (R) Dual - Core E 5700 3.00 Ghz
2) Intel Core 2 duo E7300 2
3) Intel Core 2 duo E7500
4) AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200
5) AMD Athlon ii X2 B22 2
6) Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2220 2 x 2.4 GHz 7
7) Intel Pentium Dual-Core G620 2 x 2.6

I've been scrolling through some Craigslist ads for used PCs that have these chips inside. Honestly, all I need the machine for is browsing the web. My main priority is making sure YouTube doesn't lag out on me while I'm watching stuff.

Look, the CPU is a huge part of any build, but you can't just obsess over the processor and call it a day. Any one of these chips will get the job done for what you need, but whether your system actually runs smoothly or crashes constantly depends entirely on how the rest of your components play together...

If you've got more important things to spend your cash on right now and a PC isn't a priority, that's fine. But if you want actual help, give us a ballpark figure of your budget. That way, the community can suggest a new build or help you hunt down something decent on eBay or Craigslist. If you're really just using this thing to browse the web and watch YouTube, you can grab a budget-friendly setup pretty cheap...

Just grab the G620. The others aren't even worth considering.

Exactly. That E series uses socket 775, which is basically ancient history at this point—like, ten years old.
The Athlon 64 X2 runs on AM2, which is also about a decade out of date.

Now, the G620 is on socket 1155, so it’s a bit more recent. Even if it says 2x 2.6 GHz, the architecture is newer, making it way faster than those old 775 sockets. It's a much better pick.

In general, I'd aim for at least socket 1155 or ideally 1150 (since that's even newer), or maybe an AM3 socket with an Athlon ii or Phenom ii processor. Just make sure it supports at least DDR3.

Pfft, $350 for that thing? Are they out of their minds? That’s basically $800! You could build an entire budget gaming rig for that kind of money. If you’ve actually got that much to burn, we can help you put something decent together right here.

Even if Newegg actually shipped to the States, the total cost would be astronomical. Besides, a sub-$350 price point aligns much more closely with those Celeron G18xx chips we see here in America. It’s a poor comparison overall.
