Question about my Dell

Greetings, I have a question regarding a Dell.
I had a Toshiba laptop where the motherboard finally gave up on me... it had Windows 7 installed, and after about two weeks, I went out and purchased a new Toshiba laptop that comes with Windows 8... I managed to salvage the Dell from my old machine because I have certain files that are absolutely vital for my college coursework.
So, what I am wondering is... would it be possible to take that old Dell and put it into the new laptop just long enough to email those files over? And then, once I'm done, I could simply put the original drive back into the new machine...

Not quite how you're thinking about it; the Windows setup on that drive won't boot on the new machine. But there are other ways:
1. grab a SATA to USB adapter, plug it into a USB port, and just drag and drop what you need.
2. slide it into a desktop computer alongside the existing drive, and the system should pick it up as an extra drive immediately, or
3. try your way, but boot from a Linux disk to pull the data onto a thumb drive.
Does that make sense?
