Just finished some sailing training... heading back out next week on a Bavaria 44.

Is there anyone else here who sails or has done some training? I'd love to compare notes and swap stories—there's a lot I'm curious about...

Look, I’m out there sailing on my Technics SL-1200 and my Mistral... and frankly, I’ve got more speed than you could ever dream of 😁 😉 🙂

I was already planning on spending at least one off-season year dedicated entirely to Sailing 👍

I'm not entirely sure if you were actually going faster... I've spent some time on the Bavarian 38, 42, and 44 models, and if I had to guess, the 42 seems to have the most speed...

With a light Mistral breeze, we were hitting about 8 knots... which I suppose is pretty decent.
But honestly, those Bavarian boats are incredibly spacious inside (at least the 42 and 44 versions).

I’m planning to head out on the water a few more times this summer. I haven't quite realized just how much I love Sailing... it's incredible.

What kind of boats were you on? I'm curious about the length, the number of cabins... the overall comfort...

I believe it was the 44 model.

Man, I move faster than most motorboats out there. 🙂 My boat is about 28 feet long, slightly better than a standard coastal cruiser, with a sail that pulls 7 or 8 knots—fiuuuuu! 😁

Do you even realize there's a difference between Bavaria and the Bavaria 42 Match??

I mean, they aren't even used for the same things, and they certainly don't react the same way to
rudder movements, sail pressure... stuff like that.

I guess I'm just saying, but I'm pretty sure about that information!

Did you catch what went down during that Canadian regatta about three weeks ago? Out of 12 brand new Bavaria 42 Match boats, one lost its rudder completely, and eight others had their keels come loose from the hull... and all this happened with barely a 30-knot gale blowing...

It’s pretty clear that the Match series is just a rush job...👎

I was actually out at a race recently where they had one of those 35 Match models, and I have to say, it was a bit of a letdown. It looks great on paper, but once you actually get out sailing, the performance just isn't there...

Yeah... but I'm not talking about the Match series... I don't really care for those... they're just sailboats designed for (let's call them) racing events... anyway.

I was under the impression you were out sailing during the Match
Because, honestly, any regular boat from Bavaria would be stuck just motoring along at maybe 8 knots in a light breeze like that... 🙂

Look, I’ve sailed a Hobie 16, and sometimes a Hobie Fox, and honestly? I was faster than all of you combined. Okay, fine—maybe you could outpace me on short sprints... But how long can you actually hold 25-30 knots on a board?

But man, my sailing partner moved to the States. So I tried teaming up with others. One guy totally bailed out of fear (refused to even step foot on the boat again, haha!), and another lady just completely ghosted me—no calls, no emails, nothing. My boat ended up sitting idle for six months because I couldn't get anyone out there, and since I was still paying club dues and really needed the cash, I just sold it. Man, I swear, these "experts" from those little sailing schools who think they own the ocean after one lesson...😬 Especially right after finishing some basic course at the US Coast Guard Academy.

I remember seeing about sixty feet of line trailing off the stern, but my memory gets a bit fuzzy after that...

Look, I’ve been out on the water for about ten years now. I’ve pulled into the docks after maybe 200 different races, so I’m not some rookie walking onto a boat for the first time; I actually know my way around a deck. Lately, I haven't been out as much because my main sailing partner headed off to college in Chicago. Over the years, I’ve handled pretty much every kind of vessel you can imagine, and let me tell you, I’ve dealt with enough absolute chaos on the waves to last a lifetime. Honestly, it's a miracle I'm still standing.

This summer, I'm thinking about finally picking up surfing. I haven't really given it a shot yet, but there’s something about that raw power and the sheer speed of catching a wave that really calls to me. Anyway, catch you later, sailors. If you guys have any questions, just shoot them my way.😎

Listen, you either have to embrace the infection entirely or just freeze up and stop sailing altogether. 🙂 There is simply no middle ground on this matter. 😁 😁 On June 18th, we’re putting together an incredible culinary excursion. We’ll be heading out from Miami, and along the way, we might stop by Apple or even hit up Palagruža. It’s going to be quite the trip. 😉

But honestly, it’s interesting how lately—and I mean for several years now, ever since those nouveau riche types were established as the "ideal" role models for the youth across our entire country—it seems like "REAL" sailing is exclusively limited to those slow cruisers, small dayboats, and whatever else...
Maybe I'm wrong, and maybe I haven't dug deep enough into the archives here, but where is the actual competitive racing? Where are the 470s, or the New York Yankees? Where are the beauties like the Finn and the laser???

If IT ISN'T competitive racing—then it isn't true sailing.
