George Clark19 said:So, this is about my mom

Look, I’m not trying to start some legal battle to have her declared incompetent just so she can be shoved into a nursing home or whatever—honestly, I don't even have the cash for that kind of legal mess

Right now, I'm just trying to figure out how to actually get her to agree to medical treatment.

She’s... well, she’s a handful. Rude, difficult, and honestly, her condition is starting to wreck both her life and her career. She’s already been hospitalized twice in the last eighteen months alone, but it’s a cycle—she settles down for a bit, but since she refuses to take her meds and won't even look at psychotherapy, everything just slides right back into the gutter.

Perhaps you could ask her psychiatrist about long-acting injectable medications.
They usually administer them once every twenty days or maybe once a month, depending on the specific drug.

That’s actually exactly what I was thinking.

Back when I wasn't really feeling up for taking daily pills, I used to get a Rispolept Conste injection every two weeks...

She’s got the prescription, sure, but who on earth is actually going to force her to take the injection???

She’s flat-out refusing treatment—I’m heading over to see her primary care physician tomorrow to try and figure something out.

But honestly, it doesn't even matter if she has the therapy prescribed; I think she got one shot maybe once every three weeks along with some pills, but if she won't show up for follow-ups or actually take the meds, there isn't much anyone can do about it.

It's always been this way—she’s constantly ended up in the hospital because she refuses to sign off on anything regarding her own medical care.

Maybe you could just become her legal guardian—you know, take full control of the situation—and then simply fund your lifestyle using her Social Security checks. It’s a cynical thought, I know, but honestly, given how the world works these days... well, you see where I'm going with this.
Some kind of home... I mean, would that even work? It’s a question that keeps me up at night—well, more than usual, anyway—wondering if we’re all just chasing some misplaced sense of belonging that doesn't actually exist in this fractured landscape. Is "home" even a viable concept anymore, or is it just a comforting lie we tell ourselves to keep from staring too long into the void? I find myself circling this idea constantly—much like how I used to circle the block looking for parking in downtown Chicago back in the day, only to realize the spot I wanted was always taken by someone less deserving—and I can't help but feel skeptical. Would such a thing truly hold together, or is it just another fragile dream destined to crumble under the slightest bit of reality?

First off, I honestly don't even know if they’d try to strip her of custody—I mean, they aren't exactly known for being eager to tear families apart, if you catch my drift, you know how it goes

Second thing is, who knows how long this whole ordeal is gonna drag on? And the kicker is, I’m the one stuck footing the bill for the evaluations... and let me tell you, I am strapped. I've gotta keep my own cash tucked away just in case things go sideways

Thirdly—and this is the big one—I really don't want to lose her

The reason I’m even asking around here is because you guys actually get it—you know what this illness is really like—so maybe you could suggest some kind of approach or something that actually worked for you, something that helped you stay afloat or feel a bit better, so I can try it out with her

Joe, look—your mother is a tough case, and none of us can play hero here since we’re all just people living with our own
problems and trying to manage them.

If that's the situation, I really don't see any other way forward than to just "endure" it and stay by her side.

I didn't even realize you guys were here for that reason—but look, if I can't get through to her directly, I'm gonna try every side door and back alley available just to see if there's anything I can actually do

Thanks for the input, I guess

Can anyone who's actually been through this tell me how long psychosis or hallucinations usually last?

There really isn't a set rule for that...

If you don't do anything about it, honestly, it could probably be a lifelong thing.

But if you’re on medication, it’s all about finding that sweet spot with the right drug and the right dosage. Once you nail that down, those symptoms like hallucinations usually fade away or at least become much more manageable.

You people don't have the slightest clue about what schizophrenia actually entails—even those of you claiming to struggle with mental health issues—you’re just out here perpetuating the stigma
against those of us living with it, which—frankly—is as pathetic as it gets.

I’m out here living my life—I've got my finances in order, I have friends, and quite frankly, I'm sharper than any of you
miserable types who spend your entire lives spewing nonsense all over this forum.

Was that directed at me? 😲

Because IMO, I didn't write anything bad about people living with schizophrenia.

It’s not about you—and even if it were, why on earth should you care?

I’m just frankly fed up with the way people look at us.

Just take a look at how everyone else spends their time whining and tip-toeing around—
then come take a peek at our thread.

Most people on this forum are just weak-willed types who are afraid of their own shadows.

Everyone’s out here fighting for LGBTQ+ rights—and honestly, I’m just a total mess. But wait, isn't everyone basically fighting for their own rights every single day? People hunt for truth, people crave love—I mean, most people can never get enough money, right? And me? Clearly, I can't get enough attention... which is funny because I don't really have friends, so I guess I'll just vent to you guys, my dear Facebook internet pals. So, a buddy of mine (not a hookup, just a friend) and I were chatting: him: "Hey, how've you been?" me: "Man, if I told you, the whole town would know by tonight... should I just keep quiet?" him: "What do you mean the whole town? I'm not a gossip." me: "Maybe I'd express myself better in a letter..." him: "Wanna grab coffee IF YOU FEEL UP TO IT?" (seriously though, willpower is one of those things that's always hardest for people like us to find). me: "Ugh, I don't know... I feel like I might start sobbing right in the middle of Starbucks. I just started taking some meds and they seem okay, but yeah... just send a prayer my way. I'm living with my dad right now, so I'm grateful for the food and the bed, but my room is about the size of a postage stamp—basically, I'm living in a closet. To make matters worse, my ex-husband is acting like he owns the place with my business—even though he pays $333—after he treated me like absolute trash and could've given me an STD or something. Now he's driving my car and running my company like a boss, even though my dad handed everything to him on a silver platter just because we WERE married. He's even using our family land as a parking lot and a dump. The guy has a new wife now, while I've been stuck in the hospital longer than ever and I'm just totally broken. God, please forgive me, I just don't have any strength left." him: "I'll definitely pray for you. Sometimes there are no smart words to say and I can't give you advice, but I will tell you this: everyone is only as strong as they want to be." me: "See, that's why I didn't tell you sooner." So, fast forward to now—I show this to my dad, and he goes: "Well, since those $333 don't mean anything to you, why don't you just give me $500 from your Social Security so I can be your guardian?" and I said, "Let the government be my guardian then," and Dad just goes, "Fair enough." For anyone wondering, the business is legally mine, but he (my ex—haha, he's sooo hardworking, unlike regular people who actually work, and then there's a world-breaker like me who does nothing at all) is running the show. I'm not going to do anything drastic or anything, I'm just going to sleep, but honestly? I'm terrified of ending up locked away again. I just can't do this anymorerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

Why is everyone in this place so freaking heartless and stuck-up?
And seriously, why are you all so obsessed with your specific diagnosis and your meds? Why can't you just let other people call themselves crazy if they want to? Why does it feel like I have to walk on eggshells with every single word I say here?
Why don't you guys just go outside, walk barefoot through some grass, and actually try living a normal life for once? Why aren't you really *living*?
Look, I'm crazy, fine. But nobody even bothered to tell me what was wrong with me in the first place, so honestly, I stopped giving a damn about the specifics...
So, are you gonna tear me apart right now or are you actually gonna answer me? 🍿
