Similar usernames?

Right now, there are 31 different usernames floating around that include the word "scarlet." A few of those are variations of Scarlett O'Hara—some with the apostrophe, some without. Well, one of those Scarlets just popped up, started a new thread, and now you’re left sitting there, scratching your head, trying to figure out that it isn't actually "the" Scarlett you were looking for.

Honestly, I think it's just plain ridiculous.

It’s honestly pretty stupid, but there’s nothing you can do to stop it or ban it unless people actually agree to play along.
The guidelines regarding usernames give some advice on what to do when the handle you want is already taken, but those are just suggestions, not actual rules.
I remember this one case a few months back where two users had practically identical names (if you look at the band Caveman mentioned 😁), and the "original" user reached out to the "new guy" and asked him to change it, so he actually did.
But in principle, there isn't much anyone can do about it, and honestly—even if it bugs us—should we even be trying to fix it?

Plus, when a thread is flooded with junk posts that are basically just a waste of anyone's time, having an avatar makes searching so much easier. Why struggle through a wall of text when you can just spot a face?

There’s really no reason to ban it. It’s not like you can actually stop people anyway. For instance, my own username includes... wiredangler5 A few people have already reached out to ask what I'm doing here, via private message.
No matter how much it might bother some people, I don't think it should actually be banned. At the end of the day, everyone builds their own unique identity on a forum, and most of us can recognize it easily enough.

Another thing is those usernames that are clearly just attempts to mimic specific forum members.Same nickname, same avatar, same signature.They’re out here stalking the "originals" on the forum. That's a whole different level.

There’s definitely something to be said for sticking with one consistent avatar.
Having a recognizable face next to your username makes it way harder for people to get confused about who they're talking to.

If I don't catch a slight change in someone's handle right away, seeing a different picture helps me spot those tiny differences—like a single swapped letter or number—much faster.
