Ski jumping - thoughts?

The new season for ski flying and jumping is just around the corner. I’m curious—what’s your take on how they actually score things in this sport?
Personally, I think judging the "beauty" of a flight is pretty pointless if it means the winner isn't necessarily the one who flew the furthest. It’s like if in the NFL they scored goals based on how "artistic" the play looked. Or imagine if in Formula 1, the winner wasn't the fastest driver, but whoever followed the most "aesthetic" racing line! It’s like if track and field athletes were judged on...
Anyway, they really ought to update the Olympic motto to:
faster ........more..........stronger.......PRETTIER

What do you guys think? Would ski flying be more engaging if it was purely about the distance covered?

Ski jumping is definitely an interesting sport... but judging the beauty of a flight? That's just plain ridiculous!

But look at a jump, for example. People used to push the limits and just keep going further and further, even if they wiped out completely afterward. This way, things actually stay disciplined. I truly believe that sense of aesthetics is necessary.

It’s obvious that hitting the right takeoff angle gets you a solid jump, but if someone tries to "correct" things by hand mid-flight, they end up cutting their distance by a good 2-3 meters—it's practically a mathematical certainty! Besides, we're already operating right on the edge of the scoring limit. Just look at how even the slightest mistake affects the landing in Aspen or similar spots.

Back when I was fifteen, I honestly thought style points were just some total joke.

But now, after dealing with all the chaos of Ski Jumping and a whole lot of life happening... those scores feel almost as crucial as the actual distance.

I’m not starting this thread just to lecture anyone—that's not my intention—but I am genuinely curious about some "what if" scenarios. For instance, what do you all think would happen if they suddenly scrapped the offside rule in soccer?

honestly, this whole "ice" thing just proves that execution scores actually matter. imagine if there was no ice—goals would just be falling every which way without any assists, and the scores would look like some basement-level water polo match. the technical flair from the players would definitely take a massive hit... it's the same deal with jumping. it happens, sure, but it's pretty rare for pure execution to be what decides the top tier rankings
