Snowden (2016) Movie Discussion

I’m not exactly a huge fan of most of this director’s work, so I’m not sure what to expect here. Still, am I curious to see how he handles such a sensitive subject? Definitely.

Saw the trailer and it looks solid. That cast is impressive, too. I especially love seeing Tom Wilkinson in a role; he always brings that extra layer of weight and drama to a scene. It’s invaluable. 🙂

The movie will succeed if it hits the mark. And the mark is this: "If we lie to or withhold info from the government, it’s a felony. But if the government does it, it’s fine? Screw the NSA. Edward Snowden is a hero."

Personally, I’d say the execution of the film itself was just okay.
It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays the guy who exposed the 🙏 leaked audio, and while the story is actually pretty gripping,

I honestly thought Stone was done. I figured he’d never make another great movie again. Boy, was I wrong.

It’s a solid piece of filmmaking—fast-paced, tense, and really hits home. It gives you such a raw look at how intelligence agencies operate, spying on everyone's digital lives without a single warrant or any accountability whatsoever.

What Snowden did by blowing the whistle was just insane. Truly brave. He risked everything just to show the world how the government conducts this massive, unauthorized surveillance on every single person out there. He basically made an enemy of the most powerful organization on Earth—the US government.

Solid movie. The lead actor really nailed the performance.

I think the concept here is pretty solid! I’ve always been a huge fan of Stone's takes on the American political machine—he really knows how to call it out, though he doesn't exactly pull any punches or surprise us with his perspective... you know how he is! The casting? Absolutely spot on. But honestly, my biggest gripe this time around is the script. It felt a little too diluted for my taste. I wish they had just stuck to a few core themes instead of trying to cover everything under the sun... it ended up feeling a bit scattered in places, which definitely killed the momentum. Because of that, it didn't quite reach greatness for me, just a decent enough watch.
