The Beaver (2011)

Mel Gibson has probably been going through the absolute wringer over the last couple of years, both personally and professionally. Between the messy split from his wife and those public outbursts that nearly tanked his whole career, he's become pretty much a pariah. The lead in The Beaver deals with some similar struggles—minus the public meltdowns and the mistress drama—but he decides to tackle his issues using a stuffed beaver puppet as a weird sort of therapy. Honestly, maybe Mel should give it a shot too, haha.
Anyway, The Beaver is the latest directorial effort from Jodie Foster, who’s also starring alongside Gibson after an eleven-year hiatus behind the camera. The cast is solid too, featuring Anton Yelchin, Jennifer Lawrence, Cherry Jones, Zachary Booth, and Riley Thomas Stewart. The premise feels both intriguing and a little ridiculous at the same time, if you ask me. The trailer gives off a similar vibe (what do you guys think?). It's got a $19 million budget and is slated for a release in January and February 2011.

I really did try to tell him, quite clearly, back when it mattered: Get away from that woman before you lose your mind. But no point in talking when someone's determined to be stubborn. 😁

We live in a strange society. Somehow we all got it in our heads that we are judge and jury of celebrity behavior. Maybe not even just celebrity behavior, but any kind of behavior that is publicly exposed. Perhaps it is just human nature. Either way, what will it take for the public at large to let go of the dirty laundry we’ve just witnessed — actually, witnessed is probably a nice way of saying that we marinated in it, didn’t we? The Beaver trailer has just hit, revealing what looks to be Mel Gibson’s best performance.

I am beyond excited for The Beaver. Seriously. Thanks for the heads-up, it actually made my day. Love it. It's Foster-Gibson (and having Jodie in the director's chair too). 🙏 I have a feeling this is going to be a great movie.

Well, I feel compelled to paraphrase user Gilberth, I really do: 'December is a special month for the entire Western world. The year wraps up, everyone's waiting on the holidays, and if there's any extra cash lying around, it gets spent on the people you love most. Of course, none of that really fits the original spirit anymore; commercialization has gone overboard and you could argue the whole thing has turned into one massive business. We aren't Americans, and I think we can all agree how much things have been flipped on their head, because giving should be about love and attention, not just grabbing stuff from a shopping mall. Maybe instead of buying your better half an aromatherapy lamp or some new earrings, you should take them for a walk in a local park and have a long talk, or maybe write them a poem? Maybe we should also look for ways to show goodwill, signs of affection, and a chance for a fresh start, rather than just handing over gifts?

In that same spirit, I want to ask you all for one such gesture. Please, forgive Mel Gibson. We need him.

You can't just hand out forgiveness to Gibson like it's nothing. Art and personality are two entirely different things; anyone who can't make that distinction ends up losing much more than they gain.

Gibson is a fantastic actor, but he’s even more powerful behind the camera. I have no doubt this will be a great movie, but my hope is that it provides him with the momentum needed for his next directorial projects. He is a conservative, right-leaning individual with an incredibly difficult and prickly temperament, but look at guys like Ford or Milius—they had their issues too, yet they still produced absolute masterpieces.

Mel Gibson is a great actor, but he’s even stronger as a director. I have no doubt this will be a solid movie, but I really hope it gives him enough momentum for some new directing projects. Well, obviously that bitch Oksana is just an opportunist who married him for the money to exploit him. Of course, I'm not saying Mel is some innocent lamb; if you watch those Lethal Weapon movies where he basically plays himself, you can see exactly what kind of character he has. Oksana knew exactly how to play that and embarrass him in front of the whole world. Still, I hope this doesn't tank his career too much. The Beaver looks like a great piece of work, even if you can tell Mel has aged quite a bit. I'm actually hoping he shows up in Mad Max again, since they're expecting a fourth installment soon.

I don't know... I get that Mel is talking... but once he starts barking like a beaver at 0:47, he totally sounds like Ray Winston. It's not just me either; tons of people online are saying the exact same thing.🙂

So, get this—the premiere at Cannes just wrapped up, and they actually gave it a ten-minute standing ovation...

The movie’s getting some pretty decent reviews, but if you ask me, everyone agrees on one thing: Gibson absolutely nailed this role. Honestly, Mel Gibson deserves better—don't let the Hollywood lobby crush him.🙂

Those cheers probably happened because Jodie is basically a superstar over in France; she speaks the language fluently and spends a ton of time there.

Meanwhile, the American media is out here claiming the movie is a total flop. I assume they’re just looking at the box office numbers. To them, that's the only metric that matters. Plus, they love nothing more than acting morally superior, so naturally, Mel is on their bad side now...
