👍 You might be right—but if that’s actually the case, then the whole thing is just incredibly stupid, and I have no desire to believe it's that dim-witted. Besides, I can't recall when—or even in what context—she claimed to speak Japanese.🤷 That doll's "semen" was just plain nonsense to me, regardless of whatever explanation someone tries to cook up.

Regarding the whole thing with Anomalisa being the doll Lisa—I don't think that's actually what's happening. To me, the resemblance feels more like a symbol. It's like how Kaufman always leans so heavily into symbolism in his older movies; he just loves that kind of stuff. Everything is open to interpretation, I guess, but personally, I don't find it quite that obvious.

If it’s just a symbol, then it’s a fundamentally broken one. What was even the point? It isn't some esoteric pull drawing us in—it's just that she has the same voice and the same scars as the doll he slept with. Pointless. 👎

And then, right at the end, the doll starts singing a song in Japanese using Lisin's voice.
I don't know. There's just too much evidence suggesting it really is a doll.

If Lisa is just some doll, then what does that make her friend—is she a vibrator? I mean, Lisa keeps claiming that one’s actually more popular anyway.

I feel like you guys have completely lost the plot regarding the movie idea, imho.

I don't know, I feel like that part is up to how you personally see it. My take is that he wanted to highlight the tension between being similar and being different—the person versus the object. Lisa and the doll share certain qualities, sure, but the doll stays frozen while people change. With every new person, much like with Lisa, there's this sense of getting burned out until the voices start sounding masculine again.

I don't think it was meant to be a literal thing. He used those symbols to draw parallels between the doll and Lisa, but I doubt he was trying to say Lisa *is* a doll in a literal sense.

Either way, Kaufman is really driving home that feeling of total burnout and misery within the relationship.

You guys have drifted way too far from the actual concept of the movie, IMO.

Sure, we’ve strayed from what everyone *perceived* as the film's premise. But what if that wasn't the point? What if those uncontrolled jaw spasms are just a descent into a psychotic break—kind of like in a dream? In that case, there is no "friend." Then who cares.

Because, honestly, there are just too many connections being forced here.
