To what extent does TV radiation actually impact our health?
I'm wondering about both short-term—though I doubt those even exist—and long-term consequences.
The thing is, I sleep pretty close to the screen, which has me feeling a bit uneasy.
I make sure to turn it off completely every night before bed (not just hitting the remote, but actually powering it down at the set), and I've been considering covering it with a cloth.
How much would that actually help?
It’s just a standard 28-inch LCD.😢

Whatever you do, please do not cover your TV with a cloth! It won’t do a single thing to block any potential radiation, and honestly, you're just asking for a house fire.

When it comes to radiation, look—of course there's some. Every electronic gadget in your house emits it.
I don't think it's anything particularly life-threatening, but I definitely suggest giving your room a good blast of fresh air before you hit the hay.

So, here's the plan: just turn off the TV (hitting the power button on the remote is plenty; you don't need to unplug the whole thing), crack a window wide open for about 10 minutes, and you're golden.

P.S. There used to be this old rule of thumb about keeping your distance from the screen—about five times the diagonal length of the TV. Based on that, you'd need a massive living room! 🙂

I'm assuming you aren't sleeping with your head practically touching a 72-inch screen anyway; if you were, I wouldn't take that risk either!

I would have to disagree quite strongly; I believe there is absolutely a reason to shut things down completely. One simply shouldn't leave a television on standby—because, you see, once you turn off the radio, the TV, or whatever else, and truly kill the standby mode, those who are more sensitive will certainly notice a profound sense of silence. Furthermore, by eliminating that standby draw, we are essentially conserving energy for our children’s future.

Personally, I sleep quite close to the television, and there is a distinct, palpable difference when I leave it on standby—my sleep quality suffers significantly, and I find myself tossing and turning incessantly. The same applies if I fail to disable the Wi-Fi on my computer or forget to unplug a radio from the wall; it has happened several times where I've forgotten, woken up feeling utterly exhausted, and wondered what on earth was wrong.

But then again... perhaps I am merely part of that specific group of people who are easily disturbed by any stray light while sleeping—and even by sounds as faint as the ticking of a clock.

The only other option might be to wrap yourself entirely in aluminum foil...🤣 🤣 🤣

So, look, I hadn't really thought about it that way, but you’re totally right—I'm with you on this one. Some TVs or monitors (like my Samsung) aren't actually silent when they're just sitting in standby mode. You can hear this super faint, high-pitched whining sound. Most people probably don't even notice it, but for me? Yeah, I definitely do. It drives me crazy, so I just shut the whole thing down completely at night. That’s honestly my only reason for doing it. The actual energy savings are pretty much peanuts, and honestly, you're putting more stress on the hardware by forcing it to boot up from a cold start instead of just waking it up from standby.

I’m basically living in a tiny 60-square-foot nook, squeezed right between my TV, laptop, vintage record player, printer, scanner, router, smartphone, and landline...

So far, I'm still standing!😁

Every single electronic gadget out there emits some kind of radiation, though I guess the actual impact hasn't been fully mapped out yet—some people even try to link it to childhood leukemia.
Technically, you're only truly safe once you actually pull the plug from the wall, because that's the only way to stop the radiation entirely. All that nonsense about just turning a device off before you go to bed? Honestly, it's pretty laughable.

Come on then, lay it on me! Tell us exactly why it’s so funny so we can all have a good laugh together...

Honestly, what exactly are you planning on venting, man? This whole theory of yours—that just hitting the power button on your remote is enough to cut everything off—is honestly kind of laughable. I actually have a total expert living right down the street from me who deals with this stuff professionally, so I know how it works. Maybe do a little light reading once in a while? It feels like you're talking about something you don't even have a basic grasp on. 🙂

Since electrical appliances ionize the air—though I can't quite remember if it's positive or negative ions—ventilation should be enough to clear out that charge from the room...

I actually have an expert right here next to me who deals with this stuff for a living, so maybe try picking up a book or two? You clearly don't have the slightest clue how this works. 🙂

Well, since you’re such a genius, why don't you be a pal and explain it to me, oh wise one...
And hey, keep being that "well-read," keep staying inside, and please—don't ever even think about opening a window.

By the way, I've got Nikola Tesla right here with me. 🙂

I unplug everything I can every single night—it’s become my little pre-sleep ritual. It isn't even about worrying about radiation or anything; it's just that the constant humming from all those gadgets makes it impossible for me to get any actual rest. 😁

I’m with you on this... one time I was downloading a 15 GB torrent and had to leave my PC running for 48 hours straight. I actually had to sleep in the living room because I couldn't stand the noise; I'm the same way, I hate it when things hum while I'm trying to drift off. Also, someone else mentioned how much a clock can get under your skin... "get under your skin" is an understatement. I have a wall clock in my bedroom that's been stuck at 1:36 for three or four years now, even without batteries.🙏

Man, I really don't feel like explaining myself... but acting like you're above it all isn't helping your case.
