Wow, talk about picking a "high-quality" movie for comparison... Seriously, is there any movie or franchise more ridiculous than Blade? Honestly, the only things worth watching in that whole thing are Snipes and his coat. So, I just finished watching the second installment. I found the initial concept from the first movie—the idea of vampires and werewolves existing as two warring clans—to be quite intriguing, especially once they started hinting at their shared origins and suggesting that vampires aren't actually the heavy hitters compared to the lycans. However, the subsequent plot developments, particularly in this sequel, didn't quite meet my expectations. I suppose I'm just a huge fan of the fantasy genre, specifically vampire lore, so I was hoping for a much more detailed look into their ancient societies. Instead, it feels like everything just stays stuck at the level of the first film. Even the special effects weren't an improvement; the werewolf transformations and movements felt lackluster. There was also a lack of world-building—no grand cities, palaces, or sprawling halls to show the decadence these vampires enjoyed through the centuries or even in the modern day; we just got one single ruined fortress. When the second part kicked off with that scene set back in 1202, featuring vampires as a group of riders in really cool armor, I thought we might see more glimpses into that era, but not really. Everything just drifts right back to that same urban atmosphere. Honestly, the fight scenes feel repetitive, almost like they've been recycling the same choreography since >. It also seemed a bit odd to me that Selene doesn't carry a sword; there were so many skirmishes where she was just firing bursts for several seconds straight at unarmed werewolves, when a single swing of a blade would have probably sufficed. I think the werewolf combat would have been much more effective if they had modeled it after the fights in the > animation, making their movements feel faster and more fluid.
I mean, sure, Selene looks pretty badass in that leather outfit, but I guess for someone constantly engaged in combat, such tight clothing might actually get in the way.
Even though this is a modest > hybrid, I find that the first part actually feels better and more engaging than the second. It almost feels as if they filmed the sequel simply because they had some leftover budget from the first production.

Underworld is airing on ABC this Saturday. How thrilling. First they ran Van Helsing, and now this. Apparently, some people just can't get enough of Kate Beckinsale.

What an absolute dumpster fire of a movie!!!! They completely butchered their own sacred lore—the whole Vampire thing is just trashed now. A total disgrace.

There was a time when a single monster and one grizzled sidekick were more than enough to carry a movie...

Nowadays, they just cram every vampire that ever existed into a single film.... EVER EXISTED???? 😂 They throw in Igor and his boss, some racing bird, a Tasmanian devil, even all those Playboy centerfolds from the winter season of '70-'71... you name it.

I suppose these new generations have a permanent high tolerance for monsters, so they can digest two Frankensteins, a pack of werewolves, and a Dr. Mr. Grrrr... Hyda on steroids all within a single hour.
I’m not saying the concept itself isn't inherently flawed, but... we’re going to end up with nothing left of actual monsters.😲

So, I noticed this flick finally made its way onto TV, which means even the folks who skipped it during the theatrical run have likely caught a glimpse by now. I’m curious to hear what your collective thoughts are on the film; as for my own take, I found myself quite enjoying how they
managed to weave werewolves and vampires into a single narrative thread—it's a surprisingly cohesive setup. Any glaring plot holes seem to be effectively patched over with some pretty impressive special effects. I suspect the old-school purists might start grumbling if there happened to be a similar story out there somewhere, claiming it's nothing more than a derivative rip-off, but since I can't say for certain if such a precedent exists, I'll just say I give it a 👍 👍 👍 steady three out of five, plus

They threw werewolves and vampires into the same story. It’s actually a pretty solid flick; they managed to plug all the plot holes with some decent special effects. I'm sure the old-school crowd will start complaining that it’s a rip-off if there was some similar cult classic out there before, but since I can't think of anything quite like it, I'll give it a pass... 👍 👍 👍 A solid three plus...

I haven't seen anything quite like this, even if they are lifting material from Vampire: The Masquerade... though the opening bears a striking resemblance to The Matrix.
