What is prolactin?

So, a friend of mine mentioned the other day that her doctor gave her a referral for a prolactin test, and honestly, I felt a little awkward even bringing it up to ask what that actually entails, so I was wondering if anyone here who knows their stuff could walk me through it?😉

It’s a hormone released by the pituitary gland—usually spikes during pregnancy because its job is to kickstart milk production.
If levels are high and you aren't pregnant, it could point toward a pituitary tumor or just some other hormonal imbalance.

I’m right here, I’ve been there... I had those sky-high levels and all those intense pregnancy symptoms, even though the only way I could have possibly been pregnant was through the Holy Spirit 😉 . Thank God it wasn't a tumor... but man, those days spent waiting were absolute torture.

She isn't pregnant, but she decided to head to her OBGYN and they told her everything looks fine, except for her prolactin levels! And I'm just sitting there nodding my head like—as if I have any clue what that even means!
