Would you help a Mexican? in Close to Politics ·
Chloe Garcia98 said:So, he's being called the "bigot of the year," huh? 😂

Pervan is playing the part of some small-town Midwesterner who somehow earned this title 😁
all because of his supposed "good neighborly relations." Those relations reached a peak when he "helped" his neighbor—a local police officer named Radeta—after the guy accidentally fell into a well. Apparently, he was busy "helping" him with magic tricks... Meanwhile, his cousin, a guy everyone knows is way too fond of kids, was busy "helping" Radeta's son... 😬

Everything makes sense now. 😁
Thanks for the heads-up.

Not really.

We're all hanging out on the internet now, which covers a much wider area than just the local New York City scene. 😬

It also really bugs me that I don't see any posts from those loud-mouthed "patriots" who seem to be everywhere else on the forum, yet they're nowhere to be found in this specific thread.

Which ones specifically?

So, you only drink beer with the old-timers?

Do you refuse to grab a drink with anyone under eighty?

General Rules of Conduct for the "Politics" Subforum

...

In that regard, the following is prohibited on the main subforum:

...

Glorifying or promoting Nazism, fascism, racist ideologies, or any ideologies containing racist or xenophobic elements, including the display of symbols associated with such ideologies.

Mentioning fascists and their followers counts as promoting fascism, and since Michael Sullivan3 is such a big deal here, one could argue that's essentially glorifying it.

A ban is definitely in order for crimsonorca86.

Or do they just go out of their way to get banned because they think being kicked off makes them some kind of martyr, like they're political prisoners or something?
Getting banned once might be a mistake, but doing it ten times for the exact same reason? That’s just plain foolish.

Come on, don't be so dramatic...

If I hadn't seen it myself, I wouldn't believe it!😕 😕

Well, look at that—Zeus finally gave us the definitive explanation of capitalism.

I’d have to ask everyone here: would you step up to help an American in need?

If I knew it was an American, and their life wasn't actually in danger, I wouldn't help them. And even if their life *was* at risk, but by chance I knew them and knew exactly what they had done in years past, I still wouldn't lend a hand.

Well, damn!

It sounds like you'd only refuse to help someone if you actually knew them personally...

quietwolf said:Look, man, if you ever find yourself driving through the Midwest thirteen years later—say you start in Small Town, USA and head east through all those little rural communities that used to have significant Mexican populations—you'll see what I mean. Those towns were practically wiped off the map during that "autumn campaign" back in '91, and honestly, there wasn't even a real battle fought for most of them. There wasn't even a major fight for Large Peratovica. You won't find a single house in those villages that was leveled by artillery; instead, everything was looted clean before our units moved in, and then the whole area was mined.
I wouldn't say a word if those villages had actually fallen during intense combat. But they didn't! And that's the core of the issue.
I personally drove through that area just a few days after it was brought back under US jurisdiction, and what I saw was absolutely devastating.
If telling the truth is against the rules, then go ahead and ban me too.

Now you’ve really done it. You're definitely one of them. The very last one! 🙂

PS: Since you're officially the last of your kind, why not donate yourself to the MoMA? In about 200 years, you might actually be considered a valuable exhibit. 👍

What counts as urban music? in Music ·
ari peka nikkola said:The issue isn't really with the term "urban music," since that’s always been a bit of a clumsy label. It actually emerged as a reaction to the massive wave of ruralization that swept through this country back in the early nineties. It became a defensive term used by people who were tired of having certain "traditional" tastes and forced patriotism shoved down their throats by the establishment. Eventually, the term lost its punch once that specific era of conservative, small-town cultural dominance finally quieted down, but the damage to the collective American taste was already done. So, the problem isn't the word itself—it's the people who cringe like Madonna every time they hear it. As the old saying goes, "You can take the man out of the small town, but you can't take the small town out of the man." And of course, I'm not trying to be insulting to anyone from rural areas, but like Bruce Springsteen once said, "There's a difference between an American and a total bumpkin."
To sum it up, I've never claimed to listen to "urban music," but whenever I see someone getting all worked up over that label, I get the feeling it's just those corporate sons driving around in fancy company cars, blasting Lady Gaga through high-end subwoofers and premium players...

I'm generalizing here. Absolutely... but for good reason.👋

Spoken like a true cliché.

Sophia Gonzalez6 said:Could someone please give me a definition for urban music? I have a vague idea of where to find it—maybe in Subway pop (that new "urban" segment on PBS or over at Lukas's place—he claims he exclusively books urban artists, like when Emir & Frozen Camels performed last night🙄 😂)

Does one need to sing something like "motherfucker" while wearing a dirty undershirt to be considered urban? Is swearing a requirement? Can a song actually be good if it isn't "urban"? In today's edition of The New York Times (the Studio segment), the word "urban" was used about six or seven times, always as a way to praise someone. Does that mean if a song isn't urban, it can't be good?

Please tell me, because I'd love to be urban too!😁😁😁

I often find myself wondering the exact same thing.👍

I was hoping to get an answer here from
young intellectuals and other enlightened city dwellers.

and who would be more convincing than
urban music is most easily defined as trendy music listened to by young intellectuals and other enlightened city dwellers. Good grief, Sophia Gonzalez6, "urban" isn't a musical genre; "urban" refers primarily to the audience.

😂 😂 😂

Are Americans nationalists? in Close to Politics ·
Basta said:Let's set nationalism aside and view it for what it really is—a negative concept. Instead, why don't we talk about patriotism or a true love for our country? 👍

That’s exactly why I wanted to clarify what nationalism actually implies!
I only mentioned it so we wouldn't get bogged down in the idea that it's purely a negative term.
Could we perhaps interpret that concept more as simple patriotism instead?...
