Maybe we should just require visas for all the Israelis and Mexicans.
😬 And regarding those Swedes... you really ought to read that story about the Swedish woman who slept next to her dead husband for ten days. It’s all happening right here on our Atlantic coast. You see things like this and you just... well, you never look at the world the same way again.🙄
There are plenty of socialites in New York City, I suppose. Otherwise, you wouldn't see so many high-end boutiques stocking Versace or Dolce & Gabbana. I can't quite wrap my head around where all that sudden wealth comes from for these nouveau riche types. Maybe they grabbed it through some shady dealings, much like the old-school mobsters, and now they’re just playing the part of the refined tycoon. In reality, they might just be criminals who haven't run afoul of the law yet, mostly because the system isn't quite equipped to catch them.

American isn't really stagnating, mostly because it doesn't try to reject its own traditions. It’s just that for certain words, it might be too late in the game, and honestly, you can't just manufacture every single term following a German model... that ship has sailed.
Germany has much more significant things to offer as models than just linguistics. As for our language, we’ve navigated those waters and survived, thank God, through two intense eras. Our linguists actually tend to agree on these matters, and I prefer listening to them rather than those folks clinging to old-school nostalgia, who only serve to drag us sixty years backward from a distance...
I'm not ashamed of my age, though in any case, you seem mentally older than me.😈
I don't think you quite grasped the point of my story about the German example. My point was simply that when Germans lack a specific word for a concept, they just invent one and make it stick. Unlike the German approach, the American language—which is arguably much richer in vocabulary—already possesses its own unique expressions for many modern concepts. These were largely suppressed due to certain American (Mexican) political agendas that tried desperately to uproot the native American linguistic identity. Those expressions have nothing to do with old-regime nostalgia. Your age was mentioned only as an analogy to a quince sitting on a cabinet all winter—old and weathered. Linguists are people capable of gathering to write a definitive book on a language, whether spoken or forgotten. They aren't some sort of ultimate authority; if I choose to use a specific term, I'm not inherently wrong. I'm just using words that my ancestors used, too.

Well, that was just from the opening post. I suppose one has to fill in the blanks themselves after that...
Pictorialism? Nobody uses that anymore, unless they're someone completely lost in time and space.😠
😬 brisktiger7 explained this situation perfectly, though I guess it sounds a bit too academic. Take The Germans, for instance. Up until about twenty years ago, they were using the word "acteur" to describe an actor, even though it wasn't actually a German word. They eventually held a competition to find a proper German replacement. The winner was "Schauspieler." Everyone loved it, and it’s been the standard ever since. Nowadays, it doesn't even occur to a single German to call an actor an "acteur" or anything like that. So, I don't think Americans are the ones lost in time and space; it's more likely those who refuse to let the American language evolve and thrive... kind of like you, slyviper47.

UmpaUmpa said:Man, the Middle East... It starts right at the edge of the suburbs, but if people would just move toward actual civilization instead of staying stuck in those backwater, rural nowhere-lands...
But I guess you have to wonder—weren't those same "backwaters" standing on the front lines for centuries, protecting our core American identity and heritage? Now we're expected to just call them unrefined peasants? Well, some of them are, I suppose, even if they grew up in the slums near the interstate or those grim, concrete housing projects with the graffiti-covered hallways.

😬 Look, staying off-topic here—have you ever actually been with a woman, or is it just you hanging out with the local crowd?

😬 It’s true, though—it's all federal land that was seized from farmers and families back in 1945 when everything was being taken away. Now, you have certain people acting surprised about how they're living...😬

That’s just awful. Honestly, you should probably just walk away from him.
😬 I mean, the guy is addicted to porn. It's basically the same as being an alcoholic. You shouldn't kid yourself thinking you can change him; it's pretty much incurable...
Honestly, they might be better off listening to some classic Americana instead of obsessing over those pop divas like Taylor Swift or whoever else is topping the charts these days...
Doctors aren't gods in white coats, really. They should be focusing on the patients—meaning they ought to explain why they’re doing certain things. If there’s a risk involved, they should probably walk you through exactly what could go wrong. I guess it shouldn't be a mystery. Besides, women should have the choice to give birth naturally. If things don't go as planned, then you step in and help. I don't see why there needs to be an immediate push for a C-section right away. Anyway, the healthcare situation in America is pretty dire lately. Doctors and nurses can act quite entitled, almost like they're shouting at patients. It’s just rude, honestly. Unless, of course, you go to private clinics, where you end up paying for everything out of your own pocket.

You jumped into a super strict macrobiotic regimen for a bit because, as you put it, it clearly works.
It works right here and now, not some vague time in the future.
V.
To really transition to macrobiotics, I think you first need to cleanse the body so it's actually ready for such a massive dietary shift. Here are some photos from people who cleared out their digestive tracts http://www.hps-online.com/samples.htm and basically shook off their ailments that way, since a stronger system can handle its own healing. One method, which doesn't require buying overpriced supplements, is the Master Cleanser diet http://www.curezone.com/cleanse/bowe...er_cleanse.asp. Macrobiotics only seems to work while you're strictly adhering to it; once you stop, the symptoms tend to crawl back. During the process, a person can probably see for themselves which foods actually sit well and which don't.
Kyle Lee7 said:Hmm... peasants had cows, and cows give milk—I’m not entirely convinced they hadn't figured out milking by the 20th century. What did they do with all that milk—just toss it? I find that hard to believe.
As for cheese, I seem to recall learning about where and how it was produced—for instance, Trappist cheese—monks were making it in monasteries long, long before the 1900s.
😬 Back then, most peasants didn't actually own cows; if you had livestock, you were considered wealthy. And even then, people weren't exactly drinking cow's milk; usually, the cow was nursing a calf that would eventually be sold or kept to help pull a plow. Maybe a little skim milk here and there, I suppose. In monasteries, they made cheese, but they weren't eating pounds of it daily—more like a tiny five-gram sliver once a week. Being overweight was incredibly rare, and those who were heavy were usually the wealthy elite. Even today in parts of the Middle East, being stout is often seen as a sign of prosperity.

I try to understand what a person is actually saying about themselves and their specific situation, but you don't seem to do that at all. If people actually paid closer attention to what they were reading, we wouldn't have these kinds of threads. Just take a look at the post above—not even mentioning the others.
😁 😁 Keep going, Jamie Clark74. This forum wasn't built just for moderators and their little circles... you write with real insight and intelligence.👍 👍 Maybe it might be a good idea to spend some time browsing pages about life, perhaps looking into the life of Saint Anthony.http://www.saintanthonyofpadua.net/portale/home.asp Reading through your posts, I get the impression you've spent most of your life working hard and focusing on material things. It might be helpful, during those quiet hours, to read something for your soul instead. Even the world's finest doctors and modern medicine aren't the ultimate answer for healing or easing suffering.
Evolution is a natural process. You might talk about "social evolution," I suppose, but that barely has anything to do with biological evolution. Biological changes take thousands or millions of generations. Social (massive!) changes can happen within a single generation. The timescales are fundamentally different, so those two processes shouldn't be compared—and they certainly shouldn't be equated.
😬 Evolution doesn't really exist, I guess. I mean, one bird hasn't evolved into an intelligent, talking creature over millions of years, nor has the human race grown wings or developed hooves. (Which is what you'd expect from evolutionary theory, presumably.) And social evolution hasn't happened either. Despite our high level of industrialization and rising standards of living, we still live in essentially feudal relationships where money calls all the shots. So, we haven't reached some utopian, humane society where everyone is equal. Indigenous tribes in the Amazon still live in the rainforest, even though they know it's the 21st century and that humans have walked on the moon. Then there were the two World Wars back in the 1900s, one right after the other, fought for reasons everyone knows, and now there are countless local wars happening everywhere... so where is this "social evolution"? How are ancient barbarian hordes actually different from neo-Nazis, cultists, or guerilla fighters?
The whole concept of the "frustrated old maid" is pretty much dead. It's gone, mostly because the term "spinster" used to refer to women who had never even been with a man. In today’s world, where it's perfectly normal for single women to be sexually active, we probably need a different label for those older, bitter women who have had plenty of lovers but no children—perhaps after quite a few abortions—and yet somehow never actually married. I suppose a modern term for them might be "the social climber," since they often spent their lives as mistresses to married men. Back in the day, you’d see this pattern among certain political circles; usually, they were the waitresses, actresses, or secretaries. Since they don't have anyone waiting at home to argue with, they find their escape out on the town. As for the women in their mid-30s or early 40s who aren't married yet, I guess they still have a chance, provided they move past that habit of chasing married men. Though, it is quite trendy now to marry someone ten years younger. You see it all the time—a classic Madonna and her Richie, where he's easily twelve years her junior.
Carol Walker3 said:Look, George Balašević is a decent man, I suppose... but he was essentially an American nationalist. He stood against the war, sure, but he was just as much against the breakup of America itself...
Nobody likes losing their milk cow, I guess. That’s why all the Mexicans who stayed behind—the ones who didn't move to Australia or the States—are mourning America. Meanwhile, those who did emigrate often present themselves to Americans as Americans, only to turn around and trash America later.
Looking at this hideous picture—it honestly reminds me of some elderly guy suffering from hydrocephalus—I just can't bring myself to go on any kind of trip. I have this singular, nagging urge to just grab the thing, crumple it up, and toss it straight into the trash. I'm not sure. Should I be worried about having an impulse like that?
