stormywolf39 said:it’s not even about that, it’s more about how you'd just end up getting burned even worse—if not mentally, then physically. At some point, it doesn't really matter if you're crashing from hives and hepatitis or just because your whole system is totally trashed.

it’s never "whatever"😉
at least not for me.

stormywolf39 said:Just wondering, what happens to the people who never get rehab, or get it way too late... I mean, someone using this setup could just end up getting high even longer than they would have in a normal situation, right?

yeah, basically just getting high on the taxpayer's dime😲 but in a safer environment.
and we definitely aren't about that; nope.👍

so you actually think every addict acts like that?

open your eyes 😉

I mean, they don't really add anything to the equation; even if people cause accidents through pure negligence, we aren't just going to fire them all.

but, you know, a certain number of people actually get their act together; they start over, build new lives, and then they go right back to relying on that same broken system.

😛
I mean, if everything was actually that perfect, it’d be boring as hell.
Just imagine; no homeless people, no junkies, no smokers, no sick folks, just us "perfect" specimens.

Honestly, I'd probably bail immediately; but hey, maybe the world would actually be a better place.😁

Yeah, sure, you can just take their side if that's what you want to do.👍

So I guess she’d just cut funding for alcoholics too?
and kill off the suicide hotlines as well?

Oh, I totally forgot to mention—around here, we’re still relying on foreign donations just to keep the needles covered.

brisknomad6 said:- so you're telling me that I, someone who actually works, makes a living, and pays my fair share of taxes and social security, should have to worry about whether some junkie has a clean needle for tomorrow? does he somehow owe me access to Voltaren or whatever, or does he just not give a damn about anyone else once he's high?

It doesn't obligate you, obviously. Just like how I don't care if people want to fund some church, but hey, there goes my money anyway.
I'm not exactly thrilled about where all the cash goes either, but I guess you can't please everyone.
And honestly, as for them not giving a damn about anything else... I highly doubt they actually care.

Anthony Miller13 said:The whole point of busting users is just to harass them so they can squeeze info out to catch the big fish. Besides, using is illegal anyway.
if the kind of user I’m thinking of doesn't even exist, then you're basically implying there are wealthy users out there—because let's face it, to get high-end stuff, you either have to be loaded or become a "criminal." And if I'm rich, I can just buy my own gear and keep a stash at home, so I wouldn't even need a dealer's spot.
I still think those spots wouldn't be crowded... especially if the cops started patrolling the area.

So, cracking down on and shaming users hasn't actually done anything since the numbers are climbing fast enough.

Yeah, folks in the suburbs are known for being "respectable" 😂 and having plenty of supplies stashed at home; especially those kids still living with their parents.
And did you ever consider that after all that, the old folks might end up in hot water too?😳

stormywolf39 said:I mean, why would they? It’s like how not every recovering alcoholic goes back to hitting the bars... if they all did, the whole concept wouldn't even make sense in the first place.

yeah, but what the local city officials are talking about is basically 🙂
preferring people just stay at work, because imagine if some of them actually showed up and worked😲 while being in rehab. It's way easier to just write someone off, take money from their parents to get them admitted, grab some government funding😎 and just keep people locked up.

Anthony Miller13 said:walk out and leave? maybe I'll just annoy some lady working there who tries to help me and tells me it's a bad idea. what's the point? I could do that in my bathroom at home. and what about the cops? does the police even know where that room is? can they just arrest me right in front of them, while I'm walking in or out? doesn't seem like much of a thrill to me.

look, just to be clear, I'm not against it if it actually serves a purpose. but I'd rather see prevention and decriminalization for the lighter stuff.

let's try this; let's pretend the addict you're picturing doesn't exist—you know, that uncultured, filthy creature that lashes out at anyone trying to help.
addiction isn't just some group from a movie; it's all kinds of people.
the whole point of a safe room isn't for some lady to tell you it's a bad idea; well, we already know that, obviously.
it's pretty hard to get high in your own bathroom without looking suspicious, I guess.😉
sure, the police know, but why bother arresting users? they're walking down every street in downtown Chicago; you see them everywhere.😁

Anthony Miller13 said:Personally, I find it fascinating how all of you are so incredibly convinced about whether you're for or against opening these places—like, as if addicts would actually show up to those rooms. I don't think they would. Maybe half of them might, and even then, it's a stretch. The rest would just keep doing what they're doing now. So, in my opinion, they'd probably lose more than they gain by having them.

Oh, really?
Look, there aren't just two junkies in all of NYC, so those rooms would just sit there empty if only half of them showed up.
We're talking thousands of people here; even if only half show up, that's a pretty solid percentage.
Just because we leave them on the margins to fend for themselves doesn't mean it's okay or that things should stay this way.
And look, the point of these centers isn't so addicts can just party for fun, it's about harm reduction. That's the whole idea.

stormywolf39 said:that part is pretty sketchy, especially with the hardcore types... I doubt they can ever be fully rehabilitated.

Look, captain, if someone close to me was going through this, I’d be dragging them to testing, then a psychiatrist, then rehab, maybe even some closed-off recovery commune. And they wouldn't dare complain about it either—just like, "Hey kid, go into that room, you won't get hurt because the good doctors are watching over you."

Well yeah, it's questionable; I don't know a single person who isn't totally messed up right now.😉

you wouldn't achieve anything that way😳 those locked-down communes just maintain abstinence, they don't actually cure anyone.

obviously I'd want a better place for them to use drugs; because honestly, they'll find a way to do it no matter where I take them, unless they decide for themselves what they're gonna do next!

So, I actually know an anesthesiologist.
I'll let you in on a little secret; they're everywhere. All around us.

stormywolf39 said:I’m gonna be blunt: those overdosing will die, but at least there'll be more money left for rehab programs and medical care.

That’s not even being mean.
If they actually get help, they don't have to die, and who knows, maybe one day they'll actually start paying into Medicare instead of just taking from it.
Dead people aren't exactly contributing to the system, I guess.

stormywolf39 said:rehab support and just letting them "feel safer while they hustle" aren't exactly the same thing

oh really? so how exactly are you gonna rehab someone who's overdosed? or maybe it'd be better if they just catch some random infection, then instead of just paying for rehab, you're stuck footing the bill for the infection treatment too. i guess that's your plan.👍

Megan Reed said:Look, I get it. It was meant to be ironic. 😉 Like, they don't exactly choose to be sick.
but who's actually out there handing needles to junkies? 😕

that's my point.

Nobody's handing them anything; but that doesn't mean we should just write them off.
Besides, there are a bunch of kids in that mix; are we really gonna tell them it's all their fault too?
Drug Policy: Safe Injection Sites (SIS) in Health ·
Totally.
Denmark’s been doing this for years now.
It gets people off the streets and keeps things somewhat under control, plus the public doesn't have to deal with someone injecting right there at a playground, and they can actually talk to the dealers.
If I had an addict in my house, I’d honestly prefer they had a place like that; instead of just being left out somewhere in the gutter without any medical help if things go south.
I have a few pads instead of pupils in Health ·
I mean, honestly, it’s not even that big of a deal.

But, I guess... why are they even doing that to you?
