Where's the movie? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Roger Allen3 said:So, does that mean it’s fine to just slap him with a ban without warning, ignoring years of contributions and labeling him a "constant provocateur" after what feels like only a week? Is there really no other way to handle their little dispute?

I mean, I thought there was. But then I posted my thoughts here and saw how the other side doesn't even think there's anything wrong with how they're acting, so I guess my doubts about that are pretty much gone now.

Lisa Hernandez3 said:I guess you’re talking about how he acted after being treated unfairly, so I really hope you’ve also looked at the actual injustice itself—the nature of it and the mess it caused, which honestly spreads way beyond just this one situation, affecting everyone else and the rest of the subreddits too.

Maybe I’ll draw a parallel to that other thread about moderation.

The obvious reason he started feeling like things were "unfair" was when a single smiley face post got wiped from the chat. That was the specific moment his faith in the mods just... broke.

As for the underlying stuff... I don't know what that is, but I’m pretty sure it involves some kind of breakfast casserole.

Because it'd be such a shame, really. In just a few months, we're looking at a massive new Indiana Jones movie coming out, and you might miss it all because of some impulsive promise you made. 😁 😛

Man, you really made yourself look foolish there.

Here's the link to the Google results. Either you're lying about searching, or you have no clue how to use a search engine—or maybe you're just acting tough so you can jump down someone else's throat? Honestly, if you're moderating a sub-forum on the biggest forum in America, you really should know the basic internet slang being used on the site itself, FFS.

Or I'm just calling out the most obvious forum trolls. Like I already said, it was just a slip of the tongue. Honestly, whether it's NSFW or NSFF, I don't really care; I've never even heard of either term, I guess.

When I'm actually looking for adult sites, I just go straight to them; I don't go hunting for links wrapped up in some trendy little acronyms. So, yeah, I don't see why I'd need to know every single silly abbreviation ever scribbled down, YALC.

You just got caught in a lie (the kind you seem to be throwing around quite generously here); don't tell me you didn't just Google "not safe for fucking."

And there was also a disclaimer next to that NSFW tag in English, saying "under 18..."

I'll say it again: the ban was overturned because the rules regarding "adult" content on Reddit were undefined or simply non-existent. Constantly bringing up that ban doesn't change anything. It’s zero argument. Everything was laid out in the opening post of this thread.

How is anyone supposed to believe that 80% figure when you're lying constantly? 🤷

We aren't going to talk like that.

As for the post being quoted, I don't see the issue. We can break my sentence down into simple facts. Did you lie when you claimed to have a clean record of cardboard teeth? Yes. Did you repeat that same lie twice (once in the banned section and again in the appeals book)? Yes. So we aren't looking at an acute issue here, but a chronic one.

Stop ignoring this and accusing me of pathological lying, especially when you're the one who moderates the movie you moderate every other year. I don't recall your moderator interventions over there, and I have a photographic memory. You only show up in the "complaints and suggestions" book when things get heated. I pointed out the exact same thing regarding The Dude (for months or years, Smoogja was the only one moderating the PDF for that movie).

A colleague already laid this out in their previous post.

I’ve made my point too. Baseless accusations of fascism fly by without even getting a single cardboard teeth, whereas repeating a quote gets punished solely because it forces moderators to ban people. That's just the reality of it; you can see the links in the post above.

Right now you’re sitting at 20 warnings, and before this latest mess, you had 17. How far is that from the 10 or so warnings you were bragging about in your first post? Are we lying again?

Btw,

This actually supports my argument. If I claim you were being disciplined for stuff like that, and you're clearly covered in warnings, how exactly does that debunk me?

I honestly can't believe you're calling me a liar over a handful of warnings. If every user here, with three years of tenure and over 8k posts, managed to rack up only 20 warnings without anyone ever getting banned, this place—along with KZB—wouldn't even exist.

It absolutely debunks you; if I was supposedly just harassing, bullying, mistreating, and mobbing users—which is a total lie, since I only "snapped" at trolls who were immediately kicked off the subreddit—then that falls entirely on your shoulders as the moderator for the movie you moderate. How could I have gotten away with all that without any sanctions, even during the ZgSash era? Care to explain that? And who exactly is responsible for that?

I haven't forgotten. Just as I haven't forgotten the mobbing you pulled every time you felt the crowd turning against you.

First, explain why you guys decisively banned Harper from opening new threads on the movie subreddit; after that, I'll give you an elaborate breakdown proving he still does all those exact things that got him banned in the first place.

That was taken out of context and is part of an attempt to troll. Actually, in the spirit of the new moderation direction, it handles a potential troll without needing any warnings or deleting posts.

Something anyone can easily verify just by clicking the link.

Nothing was taken out of context; it was a blatant insult to the user northerncrane4 is referring to. That user just happens to be from Miami, just like hundreds of other users. Why wasn't that given a warning if it was trolling?

Moderators are supposed to set the example for everyone else on the platform. Period. That’s the issue with the movie subreddit; northerncrane4, with that absolutely unacceptable way of communicating with users, is a terrible example for others. Yeah, even for me—we're all human, and I've got my own share of sins.

No, that wasn't actually a lie, just a slip of the tongue, I guess. Honestly, "Fucking" almost made more sense to me than "work" in that context. Like, what is this "not safe for work" warning anyway? It's kind of a weird thing to see... but what is it even warning about?

Look, please don't insult my intelligence here. I mean, anyone with even a basic grasp of how semantics works would realize that having a "clean record" isn't exactly the same thing as having "zero penalty points at the moment of the ban." It's just different, I guess.

So, I'm saying this for the thousandth time now... just please, stop with all the lies and the constant games.

Not really. It's more like photographic memory mixed with a heavy dose of Photoshop.

I mean, I feel like the credibility of your memory around here has been called into question quite a few times already. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like that's been the case for a while now.

So, what exactly is your beef? I mean, aren't you always complaining about how there's too much cardboard flying around and how we need more moderator restraint with stuff like that? Isn't it kind of the definition of double standards to demand different rules for yourself? I guess if I called you out for being a hypocrite right now, it would just turn into more whining.

Well, you got banned, and honestly, we pretty much proved that was coming. But at the same time, there were plenty of warnings and attempts to wipe the slate clean. I guess it just goes to show how rarely we actually go for the ban hammer on the movie subreddit, unless things get really extreme.

Even if Harper happens to be the biggest troll in the entire universe, that still doesn't justify how you're acting or putting people down like that. I mean, honestly, it just makes the whole conversation feel pretty pointless to me.

Of course it was. It was handled in the most childish, immature, and downright shady way possible. I guess that's just how things go sometimes.

I mean, I guess anyone could just click the link and see exactly how that whole post even happened in the first place.

I still don't really get why you're calling for bans when you're usually the loudest one arguing that we should have as few of them as possible. I guess I'm just confused.

Pornography" in a PDF movie? in Feedback & Suggestions ·

Besides, "You're allowed to drop links to pornographic content here, provided you give us a heads-up beforehand." Look, this is the final official word from the administration side of things. We’re already running behind schedule here, and honestly, looking at the official policy handbook, they keep using the term "adult content," but you won't find that definition anywhere except over on LES. Like I’ve said before, the rules just aren't where they ought to be. This kind of "adult" stuff is popping up all over Reddit, yet nobody is actually getting penalized for it. Please, just get this added to the main Reddit rules or include it in the guidelines for all the subreddits—just leave LES out of it.

That’s just not how it works. The only thing people actually have an issue with is how you constantly meddle in the subreddit's editing policies, throw around threats about how other users should act, try to boss the moderators around on their own jobs, and basically go on little vendettas against anyone who doesn't fit your mold. Those are the actual problems the mods have with you, and they're pretty much the only reasons you end up getting penalized.

Right now, I’m feeling exactly like Hannibal Lecter. With all due respect, about 80% of this is just straight-up fiction—and I don't even mean pathological lies, because that would actually be interesting. Trolling. Just one of those things that seems to be everywhere lately, isn't it?Just a classic mess-up that leaves me feeling completely washed up. I’m just sitting here thinking about those imaginary cardboard teeth. I guess he thinks he’s some kind of big shot worth a hundred bucks. We’ll have to take this up on Reddit later, though. Honestly, the way they’re moderating and driving people away like this isn't exactly going to fly with the higher-ups around here.

I’m going to need the admins to take a look at this one:

I honestly don't know why I even bother trying to explain this to anyone on Reddit, but here we are. It’s like talking to a brick wall sometimes, except the wall might actually have more interesting things to say about the local economy than most people in this thread. I was sitting there thinking about how much effort I put into these discussions, only to realize that half the replies are just people shouting into the void or making points that wouldn't hold up in a middle school debate. It’s a bit exhausting, really, though I suppose that’s just my life in a nutshell—trying to make sense of things while everyone else is busy chasing the latest shiny object. Anyway, if you actually want to get into the weeds of what I was saying, feel free, but don't expect me to hold your hand through it.
I honestly don't know how people manage to stay so incredibly worked up about this stuff all the time. It feels like everyone on Reddit is just waiting around for a reason to lose their minds over absolutely nothing. I was sitting there thinking about it, and it really hit me that we’re all just spinning our wheels in the sand here. It's almost impressive, in a deeply pathetic sort of way, how much energy goes into these pointless arguments. Personally, I'm just trying to keep my head down and get through the day without feeling the need to jump into the fray, though I suppose that makes me a bit of a bore, doesn't it?
I don't know about you guys, but I honestly can't wrap my head around how anyone could actually enjoy watching that movie. It felt like I was just sitting there, staring at a screen, waiting for something—anything—to actually happen, while the soundtrack just droned on in the background. It’s one of those experiences where you start questioning your own taste because you find yourself wondering if you missed some profound, deep metaphor that everyone else clearly caught. Honestly, it was pretty much a chore to get through.
I honestly don't know why I even bother engaging on Reddit sometimes, but here we are. It feels like I’m just shouting into a void, or maybe just talking to people who aren't really listening. You try to make a decent point, something thoughtful, and you get met with nothing but blank stares or, worse, some guy making a joke that isn't even funny. It’s a bit exhausting, if I'm being honest, though I suppose that's just the nature of the internet these days. We're all just wandering around this digital wasteland looking for a shred of actual conversation.
I honestly don't know why I even bother engaging on Reddit sometimes. It’s like watching a slow-motion train wreck where everyone thinks they’re the conductor. You see these people arguing over things that don't matter, acting like they've uncovered some grand conspiracy when they really just stumbled onto a basic fact they didn't understand five minutes ago. It’s exhausting, really. I try to stay out of the fray, but then someone drops a comment so profoundly stupid that I feel a physical need to correct it, just so my brain doesn't melt from the sheer lack of logic. Anyway, back to the void.

People calling others fascists or homophobes can just breeze right through without facing any kind of consequences—I'm honestly at the point where I feel like I need to be the godfather to northerncrane4 and pray he finally deigns to grace us with even the most basic warning—while meanwhile, I’m over here getting my ass kicked for nothing. . So, my ban was overturned (literally rescinded, and this thread explains why), which means the moderators over at the Movie subreddit now have to artificially inflate my status. All the arguments and evidence against them are laid out right here.

Oh, and just for the sake of accuracy, you don't have about ten warnings. You have closer to twenty.

I have 17 warnings out of 8,616 posts on Reddit, and I've never actually been banned. We've established that I don't hold any special privileges on this Reddit, which simultaneously debunks your little claims about me "threatening or harassing other users." Before we continue this debate, you all might want to remember that you were the ones who just barred Harper from starting new threads in the Movie sub; it's all documented in black and white.

Talk soon.

There is no ban, northerncrane4—it's been rescinded. All the questions from the original post still stand. Those rules finally need some actual definition.

Regarding that last warning you're citing, it's totally clean. Mirrorball said that as far as he's concerned, the discussion was over, after which you kept arguing, leading quietdriver3 to respond, and then you quoted Mirrorball's sentence saying the discussion was over. Except you're the one who continued after that sentence. You. Not quietdriver3. You.

Like I said, I'm going to contest that warning. By the way, start prepping those PMs for the admins (the kind involving the most egregious insults toward users or allusions to mental illness/treatment). Anyway, it's on me to report them; I'm just not sure if I can report them directly from the inbox via the red icon since you're a mod.

I also ask the administration to weigh in on these kinds of posts, as there are plenty of Splitter users here who didn't even vote for Kerum:

But NSFW isn't really a warning, I guess. Like, what does that even mean? I actually tried to google it for an explanation, and it says: not safe for fucking. So, how does that actually relate to your hotlinking? 🤷

Right now you’ve got 20 strikes, whereas before this latest incident you had 17. How far is that from those 10 or so strikes you were bragging about in your first post? Are we lying again?

Btw,

This actually just backs me up. If I say you were getting punished for stuff like this, and you're loaded with strikes, how exactly does that disprove my point?

Pornography" in a PDF movie? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
Christian Taylor3 said:The second one wasn't even close to being a full-blown post—it was basically just a warning and a link. It was actually that first one that was seriously problematic.

Look, there’s really no conflict here. Over on the soccer subreddit, we're just trying to draw a clear line between actual pornography and those specific images you linked, especially since being offsides is such a laid-back topic anyway.

Of course there isn't any conflict going on; the Movie and Soccer crowds are basically brothers in arms at this point.

The way the mods handle things around here, any kind of adult photo is considered controversial—except, of course, over on LES. And honestly, it’s not just limited to the soccer threads either; they pop up in other sections too. That’s really where the whole issue lies.

Honestly, the movie chat is just as laid-back as everything else around here.

Let's just leave it to the admins to sort this mess out. 👍

The people who moderate this movie find the second one problematic. It's an image of a woman under a table with... well, let's just say things happening. The image was linked to something that felt more like a haiku than an actual warning. The text just said: "NSFW/Kids under 18, tie your shoes and stay on the left side of the road"

It’s kind of like saying, "MST3K/Kids under 18, if you can't wink with both eyes at once, you don't need them anyway."

I guess, and honestly the other moderators for this movie feel the same, it isn't really clear what that warning was even supposed to mean.

Christian Taylor3 said:The whole mess is laid out right here: http://www.reddit.com/thread/727214 In the meantime, my ban was lifted, so I can't really reply over there. There's a lot of stuff left hanging in the air, so I’m politely asking the admins to jump back into the discussion.

NOTE: Some of the links lead to "adult" photos, so if you're under 18, maybe don't click. 😁

To put it more clearly, with one major difference ("Whether that's too strict or not is debatable, but that's how it is now."), it isn't like that anymore, as the ban didn't end up sticking. Since the ban was rescinded, we're here to discuss whether such a rigorous punishment was actually justified. For starters, if the admins were just having a brief exchange of opinions yesterday about what is and isn't allowed regarding pornography on Reddit, after which the rules are finally established, how could such a penalty have existed the day before, at the moment that famous/controversial "pornographic" post was published? In other words, "I didn't know yesterday that it would hurt me today".

To make matters even more absurd, it's now being implied that I only got off on a technicality. Am I O. J. Simpson now?

I have a specific question.I mean, why is that just some "unwritten rule," unfortunately? I’m honestly appealing to the admins here—can we please just actually put that line into the official rules?Reddit - rulesI mean, honestly, people on Reddit probably aren't even in a position to be asking for that. The corner for the banned. As long as that specific rule isn't actually on the books, handing out custom bans like that—without even a heads-up first—just feels like an incredibly disproportionate way to handle things.

Moving forward, then. It’s just not true that adult content only pops up on LES; people act like it’s some isolated issue, but honestly, it’s happening everywhere across the site, and it isn't exactly being policed either. There are hundreds of photos like this floating around, scattered everywhere from the soccer threads to the off-topic sections. If we actually applied that logic of yours—where every single subsequent post of this kind gets punished and any appeal is automatically rejected—you’d probably have to mass-ban about a hundred users from the soccer board right this second, myself included, over in the movie section. Just a heads-up: the stuff I'm posting below are the mild versions; things get a lot more intense than this.

I honestly don't know why I even bother trying to explain this to people on Reddit, but here we are. It feels like every time I try to have a nuanced conversation about anything remotely complex, someone jumps in with the most half-baked, surface-level take imaginable. It’s almost impressive how quickly a decent discussion can devolve into a shouting match over nothing. I'm sitting here thinking I've made a coherent point, only to realize I'm basically talking to a brick wall that occasionally shouts back. It’s a bit exhausting, if I'm being honest, though I suppose getting frustrated is just part of the ritual at this point.
I was just sitting there, staring at my screen, thinking about how much of a mess everything is, when I realized that being on Reddit is basically like being part of a giant, unorganized experiment in human patience. It’s funny, really, because you go in expecting some kind of intellectual discourse, and instead, you find yourself wading through endless threads where everyone is just shouting into the void, hoping someone—anyone—actually gives a damn. Honestly, I don't know why I bother checking back in so often, but I suppose it's a habit at this point, much like checking the mail even though most of what arrives is just junk or bills I'd rather ignore. It's all quite absurd if you step back and look at it from a distance, isn't it?
I honestly can't tell if I'm losing my mind or if everyone else is just collectively deciding to ignore reality, but this whole situation feels incredibly surreal. It’s like we’re all sitting around watching some bizarre indie movie where nothing makes sense and the plot is just a series of unfortunate events. I was scrolling through Reddit earlier, trying to find some semblance of logic, and it felt like I was just staring into an abyss of nonsense. It's almost funny, in a deeply depressing sort of way, how much effort people put into being completely wrong about everything. I'm just sitting here, probably looking like a total idiot, wondering when the actual point of any of this is going to be made.
I don't know what to tell you, I just think that if we’re going to sit around on Reddit discussing how people behave, we might as well be honest about the fact that most of us are just performing for an audience that isn't even paying attention. It's like watching someone try to explain the nuances of a classic noir movie to a room full of people who are just there for the free popcorn; you're putting in all this effort, trying to be deep or insightful, while everyone else is just waiting for the credits to roll so they can go grab a burger. Honestly, I feel like I spend half my life overthinking things that probably don't matter, acting like my internal monologue is some profound piece of literature when, in reality, it's mostly just me wondering if I left the stove on or if I actually have a personality beyond being mildly cynical. It's a bit pathetic, really, but hey, at least I'm consistent in my mediocrity.
I honestly don't know why I even bother engaging on Reddit sometimes, because half the time it feels like I’m just shouting into a void filled with people who haven't had their coffee yet. You look at these discussions and realize how much energy we waste arguing over things that won't matter by next Tuesday, though I suppose that's just the nature of the internet. It’s a strange little ecosystem we’ve built for ourselves, isn't it? Anyway, if you actually want to get anything done, you might as well just go Google it and save us all the headache of a three-hour debate that leads absolutely nowhere.

So, who’s actually going to step up and do this? Is it going to be Anderson? Mirrorball? Or maybe Nica? I’m genuinely curious which one of you actually has the guts to pull this off—no warning, no heads-up, just straight to the point—for a model citizen like Yurinova, whom I happen to know from the movie community, regarding this post: I honestly don't know why I even bother engaging on Reddit sometimes, because most of the discussions feel like they're circling a drain of pure nonsense. It’s one of those days where you realize that trying to have a coherent conversation online is basically like trying to teach a catatonic beaver how to play chess—you might see some movement, but nobody is actually winning anything. I was sitting there thinking about how much energy we waste arguing over things that don't matter, much like how people get worked up over whether a certain actor deserves an Oscar when we all know the script was garbage from page one. Anyway, I guess I'm just rambling now, probably because I haven't had enough coffee to deal with the sheer absurdity of this thread. Let's say, just for the sake of argument, that at the exact moment they get banned, they have zero penalty points—basically a spotless record. In that case, you guys are basically just... to I might not exactly be your idea of a "model citizen" on Reddit—I’ve racked up maybe ten warnings since 2009 and I've actually never been banned, though I did find myself getting kicked out once while sitting at a perfectly clean zero penalty points. Anyway, regarding enrollment... I guess this is how it starts. (on the movie subreddit)

So, I'm going to ask Anderson, Mirrorball, Nic, and Chika Strile one more time— So, looking back at it, was that custom ban actually a bit excessive? In a situation where the rules weren't even clearly defined yet, couldn't I have just been given a warning or maybe slapped with a minor 35-point penalty instead? Honestly, what stings the most isn't even the ban itself, but this whole implication that I only managed to dodge it because of some technicality.

Anderson kaze:
Also, let’s be real: bringing up how long someone has been around on Reddit is just a cheap way to dodge the point. It’s basically just advocating for double standards—as if we should have one set of rules for the veterans and another for everyone else. And honestly? No, we shouldn't.

I honestly don't know why I even bother engaging on Reddit sometimes, especially when conversations spiral this quickly. It feels like we're all just shouting into a void, or maybe just waiting for someone to say something actually intelligent. Anyway, if you're looking for my take on this whole mess, I’m just sitting here watching the chaos unfold, probably overthinking things that don't even matter. It’s fine, really. I'm used to it.

Of course not, there’s no double standard here—the rules apply to everyone equally. And honestly, I’m not even some veteran user; briskhound2 was actually the one who pointed that out first. I’ve been registered for three years, and there are plenty of people here who have been around much longer than I have. It wouldn't be fair to them if I went around calling myself an old-timer.

The whole illusion that I’m somehow a more "deserving" member of this Reddit is something you created yourself, specifically through your site, Monitor News: Let’s get one thing straight: I never asked Monitor to push things on the front page, and I never asked for a sticky on the movie PDF. I just came here to start a thread because I wanted to share something good with everyone—pure intentions, really. But it created this (wrong) impression that I’m privileged or operating under some special protection, which isn't true at all. How am I supposed to fight that perception, Zeljko? It’s becoming too much of a burden, and frankly, I don't want to carry it anymore.

It's not that I'm not welcome; it's more that I'm standing right by the exit—it's just that nobody has catapulted me out yet. It’s enough to say that after getting my ban lifted from zero yesterday, I’ve already climbed up to 70 points, mostly because people are handing me cardboard teeth for this: My goal is the magic number of 100, obviously, though I could probably just leave a single comma there and get deleted anyway (like I said, I won't be coming back). I'll let the rest of you decide what's actually going on here.

The icing on the cake was northerncrane4's post yesterday, right after yours:

Once again, northerncrane4, there isn't a trace of pornography here: Pornography is the explicit depiction of sexual intercourse. Why don't you come over and explain to us why this photo qualifies as pornography?

That's just not true. The only thing that hasn't been welcomed is how you constantly mess with the sub-forum's editing policies, threaten other users about how they should act, tell the moderators what they should or shouldn't be doing, and basically go after anyone on the site you don't like. Those are pretty much the only issues the moderators have with you and why you usually get penalized.

Oh, and just to be accurate... you don't have like 10 cardboard teeth. You're closer to 20.

Since the OP suggested we all share our favorite movie lists, I guess I’m okay with those kinds of posts. But, maybe there's a little catch—if you're going to list them, please include a few sentences about why you liked that decade or whatever. Otherwise, I might have to clear them out. Honestly, just straight-up lists are probably the most boring thing on this forum, and we already have way too many of them.

Basically, like Christian Taylor3 mentioned, word on the street is that the new Variety Issue 4 Event is having its premiere on December 12th at Europa Cinema, starting at 8:00 PM 🙂
And honestly, it’s hardly a shocker that the "surprise film" turned out to be Kalvarija Zvonimir Maycug, otherwise known as the "American Brokeback Mountain," or just plain old Satan! Satan! 🙂

The cover is attached below; everything else is happening on the 12th 🙂

I guess I’ll just have to go ahead and give myself a good spanking. 😳

Look, my clumsy way of announcing the new issue... I guess it really doesn't have anything to do with how good the actual content is. Honestly, an even better issue is on its way, maybe even more filled with great, smart, and funny pieces than the last one. 👍

Hey everyone, you should probably swing by the promotion and grab your own copy if you can. I guess it might be worth checking out. 🙂

I guess when you look at most of those print shops, a huge part of what drives productivity is really just the attention to detail and all the little things that come along with that.

See, I kind of saw this coming 👍

But then again, maybe that’s just an excuse for everything 😉

Sid the Science Kid said:Like, for example... if Tarantino claims his movie is about women, but you argue it's actually about women's feet, then you're definitely psychoanalyzing the director rather than yourself 😁

😁

I don't think there's really a dilemma there, I guess. 😁😁

ruggedjackal46 said:When you're trying to figure out a movie, I guess what the director thinks matters just as much as what quietdriver3 thinks 😁—it might be smart or pretty insightful, but at the end of the day, you really just have to watch the film and come to your own conclusions about it.

😁😁

That all sounds fine and fair, I suppose, but think about this; if you settle on one idea about a movie, and then the director steps up and says their intention was actually something else entirely, wouldn't your interpretation basically just be a psychoanalysis of the creator? 😁 The mind boggles.

northerncrane4 said:I'm glad you asked about that. Clark said something similar once, but I think the context matters a whole lot here. From what I know of Clark—and I basically grew up on his work—that statement was probably just him messing around. You also have to consider the sheer amount of press these directors go through during a release. Some people can give parrot-like answers to parrot-like questions, but for others, it just gets exhausting, so they start joking around. Then, forty years later, someone pulls a joke out of thin air and turns it into this massive "what the author really meant" theory.

To be fair, I can't actually find the original quote, just a paraphrase framed as a question. And besides, Kubrick says he was just kidding around. I guess context is everything when you're looking at things like this. 😳

Christian Taylor3 said:Who gives a j***** about them (😁), I'm just curious what Jeffrey Wigand has to say (‘The Insider’, lecture, Jeffrey Wigand, Europa Cinema, September 10, 2011, at 7:00 PM - http://bit.ly/q0Cwa7).

BTW, there's a special screening of the movie at 4:30 PM. 🍿

Highly recommended.

Reading this makes me want to set something on fire. But I really need to quit smoking. 🤦

northerncrane4 said:How much do you guys actually care about those quotes from press junkets or interviews after a movie comes out? You know, the ones that often feel totally fake. Have you ever caught yourselves using them in debates just to try and win an argument?

I guess ignoring those kinds of statements is a luxury most movie buffs don't even realize they have. Just imagine if people on the Religion subforum could do the same thing... 😁 man, there would be no end to it. 😁

But personally, I don't really mind those quotes. I sort of view them as heavy artillery for when you just can't prove a point any other way. And honestly, they're even better if they happen to support my side of things.

northerncrane4 said:Over on the 2001: A Space Odyssey thread, someone brought up that Clarkian quote where he basically said if anyone actually understood the ending, then Kubrick and he didn't do their jobs right.

Well, hasn't he said something pretty similar before? Like, roughly that if a movie is figured out on the first watch, it wasn't made well. Kubrick didn't quite agree with that.

ruggedjackal46 said:I haven't finished reading everything yet, but I’m digging it. You can tell everyone contributing actually knows their stuff, genuinely loves cinema, and did their homework on their specific topics. It’s refreshing to see such a solid approach without anyone trying to flex their ego or acting bitter. Nice work, 🙂.

If I were to offer one suggestion, maybe the magazine could be a bit bolder—lean into those weirder, more unconventional topics, like that piece on Ford's sexual hygiene.
As for the piece on Terrence Malick, it's a good concept, but way too much of it focuses on the director's persona. Honestly, I’ve had my fill of all these myths surrounding "unconventional" directors. Look, a person should just make a great movie and let the critics deal with the films themselves, rather than making the whole story about how much of an oddball the director is. I find that same pattern annoying when people talk about figures like Thomas Pynchon or Wong Kar-wai.

Also, that entire translation of the Sight & Sound piece on Citizen Kane felt totally unnecessary. In my opinion, the writers at Variety are more than capable of producing a far superior text without needing to lean on a long translation just to "back them up." And frankly, those little jabs at top 10 lists and various rankings get under my skin, so I don't see why so much space is being given to someone who obsesses over that kind of thing.😁

Well, in that specific text, all the facts are actually pulled straight from his movies. 😁

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions and the kind words. 👍
Is Michael Bay actually a bad director? in Movies ·
Bay's movies are about as entertaining as a scratch on a Limited edition DVD.

I mean, does anyone actually see anything worth watching in these new Transformers movies? Or are we just supposed to take their word for it that they blew hundreds of millions of dollars on them?

Probably toward the end of the year. Right now, we're thinking of keeping the magazine on a semi-annual schedule. But, I guess, things could definitely pick up speed and happen more often down the road.

I'm really glad you enjoyed it 👍 I mean, I’m pretty happy with how everything went down yesterday too.

Anyway, since I actually helped put together Variety Issue 3—I wrote one article and a review, I guess—if anyone happens to have questions, or maybe some suggestions, or even just critiques of the critiques or whatever, feel free to drop them here. I'll try my best to give you the inside scoop 😉

Hey there, fellow movie lovers,

Variety is officially entering its third issue, and we're actually doing it in print this time! You're all invited to a launch party on Monday, June 20th, 2011, at Europa Cinema in New York City starting at 8 PM. We'll probably do a little screening afterward too, I guess.

So, after being just an online thing last year, Variety is finally moving from bits and bytes into the real world of paper and ink. Yeah, we definitely cut down some trees and spilled a ton of ink, and honestly, it took a whole lot of heart, passion, and endless hours of work just so American cinephiles could actually hold an American film magazine in their hands.

We gave the third issue a bit of an editorial makeover—restructured things, moved stuff around, and maybe more importantly, brought in a bunch of new young writers. They’ll bring some pretty fresh, original perspectives on how to look at the world of cinema, I think.

You won't find Variety at your local newsstand, unfortunately. It'll only be available at specific spots, like:

New York City (Europa Cinema, Movieplex, Metropolis)
Seattle (American Cinematheque)
Des Moines (Kennedy Center)
Dubrovnik (Lincoln Center)
San Francisco (Regent Theater)
Indianapolis (Indiana State Museum)
Miami (Information Desk)

and so on.

If you want more details, you can check out the official website:

Or our Facebook page:

And yeah, feel free to leave a comment here and let us know what you think—whether you love it or hate it. 😉
