Oops. Except for Keith James812. My apologies. She’s just a middle-aged, small-minded anti-establishment type. But I wouldn't call her dim.
Good grief, Lebowski, you can clearly see that the two of us and mistypanther need to step in and explain the fundamental difference between "having a good voice" and actually "singing well" to this crowd.
There are just way too many people out there who don't get it.
I guess they just don't understand.
Well!
We’ve officially crossed into personal territory here.
Honestly, I couldn't sing it any better myself (though I suspect mistypanther could).
I don't have the voice, I certainly don't have the pitch, and as for the motivation required for something like that...
well, I don't have any of that, though I suppose I do have the facial expressions down.
But—that isn't quite enough to get by.
🙂
Is anyone else finding this forum incredibly slow today?

Yeah, it's sluggish... 🙄 It's honestly infuriating. My connection just reported it throttled down to 24 kbps instead of the 64 kbps I actually have it set to. 👎 As long as those guys over at AT&T make sure they charge us full price for it, right?
I honestly don't get it. What was she supposed to do to make the "performance" satisfy you? Stand on her head while singing or wave her arms around like a Seagull?

She really should have just read the lyrics first. Then actually understand them. After that, sing them. Start by doing it silently in your head. Once that's done, give it a vocal run. Or maybe just lie on a beach and click like a Seagull. Laugh hysterically at your own clicking. And then do the whole thing over again. Repeat that several times. Wait about five years. In the meantime, just belt out "Let's go crazy tonight...". Avoid those annoying vocal mannerisms. Just be smart about it. Don't use your skull as a resonance chamber. Some people are born with a gift for singing, while others are born with a French key. It’s almost nothing—just pure predisposition.

She could probably skip all that if she were an actual talented singer, rather than someone who just happens to have decent vocal range.

I think the song selection was just poor—you really need some life experience and wrinkles to pull off a song like that. For instance, I feel like Nina Badrić made a much wiser choice when she performed "your beautiful hair".

It doesn't sound 'sovereign' at all. It sounds strained and hesitant, maybe even a little shrill at times. To be honest, I think Tajči would have handled it much better.
Keith James812 said:So, these artists were basically singing about their own lives, which makes sense why you can feel that raw emotion in their performances... I suspect you might lean more toward understated poetry where the lyrics take center stage and the music just serves as a backdrop...
And honestly, there's nothing wrong with that. But then again, there are plenty of people who just love hearing a stunning voice tackle technically demanding songs like Gull.. and that's just as much a part of music as well..

I think you might have misread me. While I do appreciate subtle poetry, I wouldn't say I favor it over everything else. If we were discussing 'The Mamas,' I’d probably draw comparisons to... The Clash, The Rolling Stones, or Azra. And frankly, I prefer them much more than Zdenko Runjić!

Since we are talking about Runjić's songs (along with Zuppa, Popadić's, and Fiameng's!), I would tentatively compare him to Dedić or Brel. It wouldn't make much sense to compare him to Ed Maajko, would it? Besides, any truly great song needs solid lyrics (though let's not confuse that with being pretentious). For example: "Eight Tamburists from Petrovadinad" 😁.

I simply cannot enjoy it when a beautiful voice fails to properly execute challenging songs like Gull. That is my point.
🙂
They aren't just performing for the sake of it. They are truly singing.
That requires a certain level of ear and character. You need a real Voice if you want to sing opera.
I honestly get chills every single time I hear Jacques Brel perform "Port d'Amsterdam." Personally, I think Natalie Portman has a better Voice than him. At least by two octaves and 30 dB, I suppose.
I would really love to hear her interpretation of that song. 🙄
Angela Kern69 said:Of course. How could someone's voice even matter when it comes to singing!?🙂

(I suppose I have to wonder why I am wasting my time on such trivial subjects today?).
I will say it again: having a great voice is almost irrelevant to the act of singing.
Does Bob Dylan have a Voice?
Does Arsen Dedić have a Voice?
Does Frank Sinatra have a Voice?
Does Željko Bebek have a Voice?
Even if they have a full six-octave range... 🙄

If we followed your logic, every song would be performed by Pavarotti, and you'd call that Music.

It is much like claiming that the best linguist—the one who masters spelling and grammar perfectly—is automatically the greatest writer.
One really needs to distinguish between a scribe, a typist, and an author.

Similarly, one must distinguish between a good Voice and a well-performed song.
In this specific instance, she simply did not perform the song well (nor did she sing it well). Period.
she was young, and she was absolutely terrified

I suppose the issue is that her anxiety is visible and quite audible in her vocals. It’s strange because you didn't see that kind of nerves during Karanov's debut (I honestly can't believe that him being used as a positive example 🙄 ). I guess everyone feels some level of fear during their first big break, but seasoned pros don't let it show on their faces. To be a truly great singer, you almost have to be a "star" already. You definitely need a good ear, but when it comes to the actual voice—well, it's almost secondary.
Angela Kern69 said:I honestly don't get why people care if a girl is smart or not. She didn't apply to join Mensa, she's just a singer.

So intelligence doesn't matter when you're singing?! What a complete misconception!
I suppose since you're still young, we can let that one slide. In reality, raw intellect isn't the main thing, but rather what I’ll call 'character depth'—which, I guess, requires both a certain level of wit, something she most certainly lacks.
Natalie Portman has such an incredible voice; listening to her is honestly pure bliss. I mean, the fact that the legendary Zdenko Runjić handpicked her to sing The Seagull songs... doesn't that pretty much say everything you need to know?

Did you happen to catch what Zdenko Runjić said after the concert ended?
He gave those rising stars a polite nod of approval...
It was gentlemanly enough, I suppose, but there was a glaring lack of actual passion or enthusiasm behind it.

The way I perceived it, he almost seemed to be apologizing for letting them perform those classics in the first place.
I guess it was only his sense of decorum that kept him from being more blunt about it.
Maybe I'm overanalyzing things, but that's certainly the impression his comments left on me.
It’s almost as if singing is entirely dependent on the quality of one's voice...
Does anyone truly believe Frank Sinatra had a better voice than Natalie Portman?
Most female vocalists lack any sense of style or emotional depth,
and they certainly lack true interpretation. Absolutely nothing. Zero.
I am slowly beginning to realize just how much of a legendary singer Frank Sinatra really was.
It took me quite a while to get there, but...
🙂
Give yourself a good, deep stretch and let out a few big yawns.
Then, spend about 15 minutes just gazing out the window at some peaceful scenery.

What is the meaning of it all? in Philosophy ·
what is the meaning of life?

Life itself doesn't possess an inherent meaning. I suppose you could view life simply as a property of our planet (or if you prefer, a property of outer space itself).
Gravity is a property of mass. But why does gravity exist? Once you manage to answer that question, maybe come back here and your old man will give you a piece of candy and tell you what the meaning of life is. 😁
it turns out it doesn't matter if we are good or bad

It actually does matter—regardless of the question regarding Meaning. What we define as "good" is generally life-sustaining and pleasant, whereas "bad" tends to be lethal or uncomfortable. Therefore, whether looking at an individual level or on a societal scale, there is a distinct difference—especially given how brief our lives are.

Honestly, I find their culture absolutely fascinating. It’s something we will likely never truly grasp, and I suppose what people fail to realize is that fear is what drives them.

Don't you think something like this could happen in any culture? I mean, granted, it depends on the specific historical and social context. But personally, I believe it can happen, it has happened before, it is happening now, and it will certainly happen again.
