Are you living the dream? in Spirituality ·

So, are you just dreaming through life, or are you actually living it?

Do you even have a clue what it is you actually want from yourself?

Right now, all I want is a cup of coffee.

If that's the case, why all this endless rambling?
Just brew a pot.
Drink it.

Honestly, who actually has the time for that? In the time it took to air that, I managed to listen to all nine symphonies, read through every one of Kant's "Critiques..." and even learned how to play the saxophone. And I don't regret a second of it.

Just a disclaimer here: I am certainly not an expert when it comes to discussing mathematics. But let's try to look at this through some 'pure logic':
'Minus nothing' doesn't actually exist (in my view)—except perhaps as a mere mathematical notation.
The same goes for -2. That is just a mathematical way of saying, for instance, that I gave Bradley Fisher20 two dollars. In relation to how much I had a moment ago, I am down 'two dollars.' The money hasn't vanished into thin air, nor do Ipossess 'negative two dollars'—the money is simply with Bradley Fisher20. Perhaps he might return it to me.🙂

Well, going back to that whole 1/0 thing...
I don't think we can truly grasp the scale of what 1/0 actually represents.

Maybe I’m not exactly sane, 😁 but to me, this question seems quite straightforward.
If we look at 4 divided by 2—to use a bit of imagery, say, how many times a two-liter bottle fits into a four-liter container (4/2=2)—then 1/0 works like this:

How many times does "nothing" fit into a one-liter bottle?
The answer is incredibly simple, at least in my estimation—it's infinite.

(I'm not entirely certain about the details, but I believe it went something like this):

Have you all heard the news?
Something terrible has happened.
John Klakar from the local Pupnat area
has lost his vessel to the sea.

The boat was coming in from Ston
carrying a load of Klakar goods
when a massive gale swept in
and sent him straight to the bottom.

I shall drape myself in black veils
darker than any shadow
wearing a shirt as dark as Crljen
as I mourn for Klakar.

I'm still trying to figure out what language this even is!

Well, if you ask the author, he’ll tell you straight up that the language is exactly how he imagines people in Dalmatia sounded over... two hundred years ago. So, it's essentially made up—though, I suppose, if you put in a little effort, it's somewhat understandable.

Putting Jesus, Tedi Spalat, and Karan in the same sentence is quite the stretch. 🙄

It’s not that I’m completely delusional when it comes to Tedijen, but Karan is... well, he's kind of like... Milo Hrnić 🙂

My apologies. It’s much more probable that you are simply feeling under the weather after all. Please forgive me.

Jason Morgan2:
Can you suggest some sci-fi or fantasy—and please don't include those soap opera sagas like Santa Barbara, which are absolute garbage—that actually hits all those marks?

Well, if I am allowed to count things like Santa Barbara and similar shows, then I suppose I could give you some names. But if we are excluding them, then honestly, finding something that fits all those criteria is quite difficult. 🙂

It’s all a bit much to digest at once. From what I can gather, though, Pandora seems to believe that Consciousness predates Space (even if she frequently sets traps or argues that nothing exists just to lead us toward the realization that if anything *does* exist, it must have always been there), whereas Richard Howard2 maintains that it’s far more logical and reasonable to argue that Space existed before Consciousness.
Did I get that right?

Just to refresh everyone's memory on the topic, I’ll retell an Asimov story for you (please excuse me in advance, as I'm recounting this from memory—so I can really only provide the core concept): back in the day, operators working with the most complex supercomputers in the world would occasionally think to pose a difficult question to the machine. It was phrased differently every time, but it ultimately boiled down to one thing: "Can entropy be reduced by will—in other words, can the heat death of the universe be avoided?" The story jumps forward through hundreds of millions of years. Computers become increasingly sophisticated, yet they always give the same response to new operators: "Insufficient data to provide an answer." Billions of years pass; humanity has vanished, leaving behind only the Computer, surrounded by a nearly dead universe teetering on the edge of total chaos. The computer keeps calculating and searching for the answer to the one true, remaining question. And when the universe is effectively dead, the Computer finally finds its answer and says, "Let there be light." And there was light.

What was my point in sharing that? Nothing, really. I just wanted to tell a story.

Peter Morris58 said:It was pretty dull. The acting wasn't anything special, and I don't really get why she won an Oscar when she barely even appears in most of the scenes.

I just finished watching it myself. Poison isn't that movie; you were clearly watching some other "what's-it-called" film... 😁.
Personally, I found the film quite enjoyable, and as someone else mentioned, it is certainly one of the top five films from last year—at least among those I've seen. Comparing it to "The Green Mile"? Well, I think drawing such a comparison is almost an insult to this film. As for the cast, everyone truly rose to the occasion. ("It runs for two hours, though it could have been forty-five minutes" 🙄 ) On the contrary, I feel the pacing was actually spot on—though perhaps it could have used a couple of car chases 🙄? Furthermore, the ending was handled with a subtle touch to avoid feeling overly Hollywood; there is a slight sense of fatalism and impending doom to it. It was very well done.
Cringey American movie tropes in Movies ·
But, the issue is that they're just too commercial... Oh, sure, if all my friends are watching the exact same movie I am, then I suppose I can't really claim to be unique.

copperdriver15, man, have a little mercy. I went through that exact same phase myself 😳 (back in the mid-seventies). 😁

If I had my way, I would ban the display of the American flag entirely, regardless of the context. I’d also prohibit any characters in movies from expressing patriotism; frankly, it just feels unrealistic. Should an American soldier in a film actually be portrayed as a patriot (or even be capable of it!)? It would be much more compelling if they were, say, a bit of a cynic instead. Furthermore, I believe we should restrict certain people from acting altogether. Who honestly thinks it's a good idea to film nonsense like romantic comedies and then cast Julia Roberts in the lead role? I think Nela Eržišnik would have been a far better fit for those parts.
The American flag should definitely be banned too. 👍
Rape: Fact or Fiction? in Philosophy ·
Quincy:
Furthermore, how can anyone be certain that the victim didn't somehow provide an excuse for such an act at any point?
For "such an act"—what exactly are we talking about?
An excuse (sic!) for rape (?!). 🙄 Not at any single moment! — perhaps she just changed her mind. 🙄
Quincy:
Whose word carries more weight??? How can one be sure that it was actually rape???
Whose word holds more weight and whether it constitutes rape is a matter that needs to be determined through a formal legal investigation. It's the same as with any other criminal offense. That being said, saying "she said no, but I knew she wanted it" isn't much of a defense. At least, not in my view.

The only thing I can really wrap my head around is that you might prefer things to be a bit rougher, and maybe it gets to you when a woman resists slightly, even though you know deep down the situation is somewhat irregular. But you probably think, as long as she doesn't press charges, it's fine. She probably won't. I suppose I would suggest lighter sentences for those who actually admit to what happened.
And maximum sentences for those who claim that, well, she did say no, but they aren't guilty because they simply misunderstood her. 🙄 They are either foolish or lying, and I believe both should be strictly punished.
In any case, there ought to be some form of physical, medical, or forensic evidence—just like in any other criminal proceeding.

Therapy and mental health resources? in Health ·
Even my session today with my doctor just proved how rarely anyone actually gets me. I say one thing, and she just pushes back with the complete opposite view.

That doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing, I suppose. She isn't really there to "get" you the way a close friend might—someone who understands your perspective and agrees with you rather than pushing back. Maybe consider why that "opposite" viewpoint might actually be useful. It can't truly hurt you. Of course, all of this assumes you feel she has earned your respect in the first place. Otherwise, it’s probably not worth much, since you'll end up feeling like you're the one who has to "fix" her instead. 😁

you'll probably never truly get where they're coming from.

I suppose having intelligence helps you understand other people; it doesn't mean you have to accept or agree with them, but it does allow for a better understanding.
Intelligence is generally an asset in life rather than a hindrance—
unless, perhaps, it is intertwined with some sort of mental health issue or disorder.

For that reason, I wouldn't advise her against seeking psychotherapy.
It can be beneficial, but ONLY if she manages to find someone who is at least somewhat competent, because therapy offers very little value if the patient doesn't respect and value their therapist.
