Grapefruit and medication interactions in Health ·
rustymoose54 said:nah, from what I've gathered, if you have a super high concentration of Vitamin C in your urine—which you could totally get just by snacking on a couple of bell peppers—it actually triggers a false negative for glucose when you're using those standard test strips.

yeah, I totally left my thought hanging there... I was talking about urine.

I had no clue that was tied to Vitamin C regardless of how you take it, I'd only ever read about it being an issue with dizziness.

Honestly, the absolute easiest and smartest move you can make is just to sit down and actually read the instruction leaflet that comes inside the box with your meds.

plus it isn't even always the case that every single little thing that could or couldn't happen gets printed on the label.

Like how certain Vitamin C supplements or even just standard beans can totally throw off a glucose test and show a false positive... you're never gonna see that noted on the packaging.

George Bailey2 said:I caught somewhere that grapefruit can actually mess with how certain meds work, like stuff for heart issues, blood pressure, or even antihistamines.
Is there any truth to that, and what exactly is happening in the grapefruit to cause those interactions?
Thnx

It’s all because of these specific bioflavonoids you only find in grapefruit, which basically crank up the absorption of antihistamines by four times, so taking one pill with some grapefruit juice is basically like slamming four pills down with a glass of water.

You definitely shouldn't take heart or blood pressure meds alongside whole grains because the fiber content can really tank the medication's effectiveness.

And don't mix pumpkin seeds or liver supplements with antibiotics since it significantly weakens how they work.

Also, stay away from dried fruits, berries, or red wine when you're on meds for gut infections or depression because it spikes your blood pressure, which is super dangerous for anyone with heart conditions.

Chloe Nguyen3, I’ve been sticking with lutein from Nature's Way and some beta carotene lately.

I used to take this combo of Clarity Vision and 🤔 I can't quite wrap my head around the other brand's name right now...

Chloe Nguyen3, what kind of eye vitamins have you been using lately?

do you think these eye issues we're all dealing with are actually triggered by staring at screens all day because I've been telling myself it isn't just the computer work since I definitely had some vision stuff going on way before I started working on my laptop, though I definitely notice more strain now that I'm glued to the screen for hours on end.

Beta-carotene vs. B-complex: Thoughts? in Health ·
Just so you know, beta carotene is basically just a provitamin A, so it actually has zero connection to vitamin B
Is Zithromax safe during pregnancy? in Health ·
So I ended up dealing with an ear infection recently and my OBGYN just handed me some Cefdinir from the cephalosporin group, which is totally fine since those are actually given to pregnant women all the time.
I was just looking over some lab results for a patient with stomach cancer, and they were only testing for the beta HCG tumor marker...

Based on what I've seen here, my hunch is that HCG acts as a key indicator for those kinds of gastric cancers.

but they aren't all perfectly specific, though they're definitely more specific than C3

)

I'm pretty sure those ones point right toward stomach cancer
jadetinker85 said:You might want to try asking over on a Johns Hopkins medical school forum instead?
My sister-in-law keeps insisting these are C3 markers for some kind of tumor, though I guess you'd really need a specialist to give you the full breakdown.

if C3 is actually a tumor marker, isn't that usually found in a urine sample?😕
The pros and cons of milk in Health ·
Hannah Scott69 said:So basically I’m a huge milk enthusiast and I totally chug about a liter every single day which honestly makes me feel like a total addict, but I’ve never actually broken a bone or anything like that because I read somewhere that dairy fats are actually pretty good for you.

my late mother-in-law used to drink like a gallon a day and she ended up breaking her ribs a bunch of times and couldn't even bend over at the waist because of her spine... then she passed away from bone cancer.
Is he doing even worse now than when you first "took charge" of the situation?

Sending you some major good vibes so you can crush this once and for all🙂
Contact lenses in Health ·
When I first started wearing contacts, I had absolutely no clue that I could actually go in the ocean, swim, or scuba dive without any issues... so I used to rip them out every single time before hitting the water, then I'd be hunting for fresh water just to rinse the salt off my hands, then trying to put them back in, and praying for some shelter from the wind so they wouldn't fly right out of my eyes... man, it was such a struggle. Honestly, the hardest part was definitely trying to find my floaties when I was coming out of the surf because my prescription is so high that I can barely see my own hand in front of my face... so I’d always buy the brightest, most neon-colored floaties possible and just stare intensely at that little speck in the distance so I wouldn't lose sight of it, otherwise who knows where it would have drifted off to.

But now everything is totally fine since I switched to soft ones, I don't even take them out unless I'm going to bed, and I just swim and dive whenever I want...🙂
