No, it isn't confusion. I just can't feel anything anymore. It's a defense mechanism, I know, but I don't know how to fix it... or if it even can be fixed.
It used to happen from time to time. When things got rough, I'd shut down for an hour, maybe two, or half a day. But now it's spiraled out of control. I haven't felt a thing in days, and honestly? I'm terrified of feeling anything again because...

So what's the issue then?

Well, we went through some rough patches and I tried so hard to make things work, but I was constantly having to shut down just to protect myself from getting hurt... and now that everything is finally fine again, I think all that stress and shock just left me feeling totally numb.
Kevin Wilson8 said:It's tough... yeah, but not impossible. Time is on our side, and if someone compassionate, caring, and reliable comes along... things move faster. Just keep your eyes open.👍

Oh man, nooooo, you totally misread me... it's the same guy, same relationship.

Six months of nonstop stress finally caught up with me. It's been rough—so much uncertainty, waiting on things I couldn't control, just constant uphill battles... and now that things are finally starting to look up after all that fighting, I feel like I've totally shut down and lost my spark.

Any advice on how to snap out of it? 😢

velvetjackal20 said:hey guys, I'm struggling big time... not sure where to start... basically, I don't go out much because I have no one to go with. I have school friends, but that's not really "it," you know? I've actually changed lately and become way more social—I used to be super quiet and just didn't care about hanging out... so now I want to know how to change things up, how to find a crowd, and where to go? Also, no girlfriend, which is definitely something I'm missing. Maybe I'll find one since people tell me I'm pretty cute🙂 ...any help would be awesome... thanks

It’s almost like they know their looks will carry them so far that they don't even bother building actual character...
Maybe it's just my own bias, though. Who knows?

Yeah, you're not wrong. Sure, there are exceptions, but let's be real—kids who grow up being super cute get all the attention and everything they want just for being adorable. It shapes them. By the time they're adults, most of them focus on their looks instead of working on their personality... it's definitely a thing: pretty but empty-headed.

That second phase hit me hard—realizing I actually had to keep going, so I might as well make it a good life. That's where she really stepped up for me.
Feeling a little jealous of my friends lately. I tried my best to shake it off, though.
I mean, they aren't exactly juggling two, three, or even four different medications at once.

I honestly think it’s a brain thing, even if it feels like it's coming from your soul.

I'm lying to myself. I knew it all along, but I just keep pushing it down. It's honestly so hard to face.
I ended up going all by myself to see some awful psychiatrist over at the Mayo Clinic. Maybe it’s just karma, or maybe I really wanted this to happen, who knows?

I mean, honestly... it’s just awful. Really.
I really hope they come up with better meds soon. Fewer side effects would be huge. And honestly? Just a total cure for everything. That'd be the dream.

I was always the one looking for the party, heading out, dancing.
Then, suddenly, I just wanted to change everything, like I could turn back the clock.
For an entire month, I basically did nothing but sit in one spot staring at books.
On my 18th, I had my first Modafinil. Gross.

Ever since then... It sounds weird, but maybe not after everything.
Now when I wake up, instead of thinking like my dad: "What a beautiful day,"
it's more like: "Let's get moving, no excuses."

My brother was exactly the same way, seriously...
He was always that guy, ready to party, and once he turned 18......

Therapy helps you swap out those bad attitudes that keep landing you in fights.

For more on that, check out our friend on Twitter, @Neli. She's really into those therapeutic methods.

I get it. I totally knew you'd say that. 🙂
Fair enough...

My brother's been dealing with this too, for about 7 years now... just thought I'd ask.

Yeah, but everyone here makes it sound so casual, like taking meds is just part of a normal routine...

How long do people actually stay on them, and when do you finally stop?

Just wondering, purely for my own info since I'm kind of an outsider here... how does it actually work when you decide to start taking meds (for anxiety or depression)?
I've definitely had some really rough patches in my life—long stretches of depression that lasted months. I was sleeping all day, just had zero motivation for anything, and even dealt with panic attacks... but somehow, I always managed to pull myself through on my own.

The tests I took four years ago showed something totally different...
And honestly, I wasn't even close to where I am now back then...

Rebecca Flores5 said:So, by all accounts, you've got that intrapersonal intelligence down pat (you really get how you tick, as you put it). But maybe when it comes to interpersonal stuff—your relationships with others (like how you say you can't bring yourself to hurt anyone, or how you sympathize so much you'll actually cry over a news article)—maybe you aren't reflecting their feelings so much as just absorbing them and projecting them as your own... someone mentioned this in a thread before and I agree... sometimes it's hard to tell if you're truly "feeling" for others or if you're just creating those emotions within yourself and acting them out...
I don't know, I see it more as a gift than a flaw. You just have to learn to distinguish "what is you" from "what belongs to someone else." If you're always reacting to other people's emotions, you might just be being passive because you don't want any conflict, which leaves you fighting with yourself. That "gift" really is a gift; you just need to learn how to steer it.

So well said. 🙂

"sometimes it's hard to tell if you're truly "feeling" for others or if you're just creating those emotions within yourself and acting them out..."
It's clear. Honestly, I often don't trust those feelings. I think of them as just noise in my head, so I do a quick mental check, push past the limit, and realize I was right all along... I haven't been wrong about it in years...
The weirdest part is that I still don't fully trust myself, because it doesn't seem realistic that I could feel someone else's vibe that intensely...

I guess it's something anyone could practice if they wanted to...

VioletStorm said:What you're talking about is plain old INTELLIGENCE.
The thing you're asking about—well, in modern times, since everyone wants to feel special even when they're clearly just following the herd, they cooked up this idea called EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE and stuffed their own CUNNING into it.
Basically, they pitted it against actual INTELLIGENCE and started claiming it was more important. So now, the EQ of some guy at a local bar or a gambler like Franc Ozbolt or Cinober is supposedly more vital than the IQ of someone like Albert Einstein.
And I guess it’ll stay that way as long as American managers keep writing those cheesy life coaching books instead of actually doing what they're good at: corporate greed.

Just an article for people who don't get it...

We actually use seven different types of intelligence every single day. Most people just rely on IQ tests to measure themselves, but when they do that, they mistake those scores for their absolute limit. The truth is, an IQ test only scratches the surface of what a person can really do.

Since there are so many different ways to be smart, knowing how to spot them in yourself makes it much easier to reach your full potential.

Psychologist Howard Gardner identified these 7 specific types:

1. VERBAL-LINGUISTIC INTELLIGENCE

2. MUSICAL INTELLIGENCE

3. LOGICAL-MATHEMATICAL INTELLIGENCE

4. VISUAL-SPATIAL INTELLIGENCE

5. BODILY-KINESTHETIC INTELLIGENCE

6. INTRAPERSONAL INTELLIGENCE (understanding yourself)

7. INTERPERSONAL INTELLIGENCE (understanding others)

Numbers 6 and 7 basically make up what we call emotional intelligence...

We studied a slightly different breakdown back in my psych classes, but it's pretty much the same thing.

It feels weird to ask for input and then shut everyone down when they actually empathize with you.

No one needs to feel sorry for me. My gift is mostly just too much sometimes. Like last night, after I posted, I just wished I could turn it all off. To just be a regular person in my relationship—you know, with all the flaws and mistakes and misunderstandings. And yeah, maybe I am stubborn about listening to others, but most people just post nonsense because they don't get it or simply refuse to believe it....
