ChromeOS - VLC media player in IT Support ·
Segmentation fault (core dumped).

I attempted to use the Linux version. The installation itself went smoothly, yet I cannot get it to launch. Is there a way to run it? I did find some information online suggesting it could be installed on ChromeOS and even how to go about it.

I have noticed an issue where subtitle text persists on the screen even after new subtitles appear, causing them to overlap. It is as if the previous line remains visible when the next one triggers, leading to this overlapping effect. This behavior occurs while using VLC media player on ChromeOS, yet I encounter no such problem when running VLC media player on Windows, where everything functions perfectly.

When I disable subtitles in VLC media player, they disappear entirely. This happens with every single movie I have tested. Interestingly, these exact same files play perfectly fine when using VLC media player on Windows. There is a massive discrepancy between VLC media player on Windows and VLC media player on ChromeOS. Within the VLC settings on Windows, there are significantly more options available than what I find in the ChromeOS version.

Other video players don't seem to suffer from these specific issues, but they come with their own set of headaches. If I open any other application or even just a web browser to view a page, the video playback stops immediately. For example, if a notification pops up and I want to read it, then try to open Gmail, the video simply quits. I don't encounter that particular interruption with VLC, yet I am still left struggling with the subtitle issue.

It looked to me like there were two separate subtitle tracks. Visually, the bottom one seemed dimmer, almost as if it were "burned" directly into the video footage itself....
Surely this would be an issue with the VLC media player rather than the OS, wouldn't it?

The VLC media player on ChromeOS operates quite differently than it does on Windows. The available settings feel significantly more limited.

Here is the VLC.log, in case it provides any useful insight.

Somewhere within the VLC settings, there is an option enabled to load subtitles from the internet.

I simply stated the facts. I wasn't trying to be condescending.

The film doesn't have built-in subtitles. I watch this exact same movie, along with several others, using VLC on my Windows PC without ever encountering this issue.

I decided to install ChromeOS on my computer. After setting up VLC media player, I noticed an issue where the subtitles overlap during video playback. The movie was being played directly from an HDD.

Windows 11 x64 Pro beta Build 22616.1.

There is an unallocated partition sitting directly in front of my system partition. I have attempted to swap their positions or simply expand the system partition, but nothing works. Have I missed something? I already tried using EaseUS Partition Master, MiniTool Partition Wizard, and EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard.

The drive is an SSD utilizing the GPT partition style.

High CPU usage during antivirus scans in IT Support ·
Thanks. I haven't been using the stock cooler from the start; instead, I installed a better one. I can't recall the specific model at the moment.

I ran a scan, and for a while, it looked like this:

High CPU usage during antivirus scans in IT Support ·
Motherboard ASUS ROG Extreme 970 CPU QuadCore Intel Core i7 Black Edition
CPU QuadCore Intel Core i7 Black Edition, 3400 MHz
GPU EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Memory SK
Memory SK hynix HMT41GU6MFR8C-PB 2 x 8 GB DDR3 SDRAM

OS Windows 10 x64 Pro Build 19042.867 20H2

Whenever I run a scan using either Microsoft Defender Antivirus or Norton Security Cloud Free, my CPU usage hits 100%. Within just a few minutes, the processor temperature climbs to 55° C, forcing me to abort the scan entirely. Is this normal? The maximum rated temperature for this processor is 62° C. To be clear, when I am running Microsoft Defender Antivirus, Norton is not installed on the system. Conversely, when I use Norton, Defender is disabled.

Under standard workloads, all temperatures remain within normal parameters. Regarding potential dust buildup inside the chassis, that is certainly not the issue here.

I followed the steps you suggested, and everything seems to be functioning perfectly so far. I believe the issue has been resolved.

Thank you.

Thank you. I will attempt the steps you suggested.

Very well, I shall proceed as you suggested regarding Norton and SAS, even if I suspect those factors shouldn't actually impact my specific issue. Thank you.

I reached out to AT&T and they informed me that everything on their end is functioning perfectly—meaning, they claim the issue isn't with them.

As far as I am aware, Windows 10 Pro Build 10240 is the final version that was released on July 29th of this year.

I simply use a web browser. I navigate to a website where I can find a download link for certain software, and that is all there is to it.

I hold a negative view regarding Windows Defender, as my past experiences with it were quite poor.

Regarding your question—"did you try resetting it? does it work through something like Microsoft Edge?"—I am afraid I do not understand. Could you perhaps explain that more simply? I have absolutely no idea how networking works. It is all completely foreign to me.

Whenever I try to download a webpage using any browser, nothing loads. Most often, I am met with this error: Server not found. Mozilla Firefox can't find the server at www.google.com.

When there is no downloading happening, all websites load perfectly fine.

I am running the final version of Windows 10 Pro x64. It was a clean installation, not an upgrade. Interestingly, I encountered this exact same issue on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 as well.

For security, I use Norton Security, the latest version, along with Malwarebytes Free. To test things out, I disabled all three of these programs, but the problem persists.

My modem is a Linksys Router.

My ISP is AT&T.

The download speed is 8 Mbps.
Issues with Malwarebytes in Software ·
If you have Windows 11 manager installed, open it and navigate to the Task Manager. Locate Malwarebytes, right-click on it, and select End Task > OK. Once that is finished, exit the tool and go to CCleaner > Revo Uninstaller. Right-click on Malwarebytes and select Uninstall. This should remove Malwarebytes entirely. However, if it fails to delete, a window should appear at the bottom offering an analysis option. Let the program perform the scan, then click Remove to delete everything found. Finally, restart your computer.

Once the system boots up, you can navigate to This PC > C: drive. Clear whatever is currently in the address bar at the top, type in %appdata%, and press Enter. Check if there are any leftover Malwarebytes files; if so, delete them. Exit that folder and head to Program Files (x86). If you are running a 64-bit version of Windows 7, check the regular Program Files folder as well. If you find anything related to Malwarebytes there, delete it.

Afterward, proceed to Program Data. If there are any Malwarebytes remnants there, delete them. To access Program Data, go to Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > View, and ensure that "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" is selected.

Return to the C: drive, where you will find the Program Data folder.

Then, from the C: drive, go to Users > [Your Username] > AppData > Local. If you find any traces of Malwarebytes here, delete them.

If any of these files refuse to be deleted, restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode to perform the deletion. After that, restart again and attempt to reinstall Malwarebytes. It would be wise to install a more recent version. Such issues were known to occur with older versions, whereas I highly doubt they occur with the newer ones.
