Dealing with bad cramps? in Women's Health ·
rowdylynx38 said:Before I went on birth control—the pill, specifically—it was just constant curled up on the couch for the first 24 hours. Dealing with Advil, Aleve, or whatever else worked... 😁and honestly, just heating up towels to press against my stomach because it felt like the only way to get any relief. Plus, the bleeding was insane—I remember having to use double pads at night during those early days.
Since starting the pill, it’s been a total game changer. The pain is basically gone, I actually know exactly when my period is coming, and it doesn't drag on forever.

🙂

I dealt with the exact same thing... unbearable pain, cramps, throwing up... dizziness... I don't even know how to describe it. For a while, I was just white-knuckling it with things like Buscopan or Spasmex, etc., but once I started the pill, all those issues just vanished...

As far as I know, there isn't anything right here—the closest thing to Maui would be somewhere near Santa Barbara, but you won't find wakeboarding there, more like
sky or kite boarding, I think.

Dr. Anis's office over on Bauer Street...
I used to head there back when I had my device
and honestly, I was pretty happy with them. It's a private practice, of course, so you get that level of service.

how are you even supposed to tell if someone’s overweight or not? Does anyone actually know how that weight-to-height thing works?
I’m always down for eating a bit lighter—not that I feel heavy right now or anything—but I am curious what the "average" looks like... you know, that ideal weight number.
Anyone got the scoop on this?

Well, you take your height and divide it by your weight—or vice versa, I think—and then you get a number, hmmm... there’s a whole chart for it... but honestly, I totally blanked on it, sorry!🙂

Stomach issues... in Health ·
Susan Hughes85 said:Basically, I've had this one issue for as long as I can remember.
It's my stomach.
I wouldn't call myself fat—more like thin rather than fat—and I'm slim everywhere else except my midsection.
Every single time I eat, I just bloat up—I can't tell if it's trapped air, a tiny stomach, or what the hell is going on. In the morning when I wake up, everything looks fine (okay, maybe not "flat," but normal), but throughout the day, my waist hits about 28-30 inches. (For context, my hips are 35 inches).
Lately, I've been doing crunches—like, 60 reps every day on the machine—but nothing's changing. If anything, it feels even bigger.
....
Is there an actual fix for this, or should I just learn to live with it?

That might just be how you're built—maybe try using a hula hoop around your waist to help, but honestly, skip the crunches.

Hannah Barnes24 said:I think you’ve basically figured it out yourself—getting a second opinion from another doctor is always smart. As for the diet part, if you aren't feeling meat, then just don't eat it. Honestly, your diet looks pretty varied to me, so I don't think that's where the issue lies—you seem to be getting everything you need from other sources anyway.
Maybe dig up some actual sports nutrition studies specifically for vegetarians (I don't know, maybe check out what some pro trainers at Gatorade would say—they're my go-to).
Besides, you aren't even vegan; you still have dairy, eggs, and fish in the mix. Most of those issues doctors bring up usually hit vegans harder when they aren't careful about how they balance their nutrients.
I haven't touched meat in about 15 years, though I did start eating fish a few years back. If the craving hits, I'll indulge, but right now, it's just not happening. I'm constantly active with sports—sometimes more intense than others—and I've never dealt with issues regarding muscle mass, fatigue, or strength levels. Actually, I get regular checkups and my health is great. I stopped eating meat way back when I was 12, and everyone kept telling me I'd be a wreck by the time I turned 18, but hey—here I am.

Just make sure you don't turn into any kind of fanatic ( 👋 total nutcase) and just do whatever works for your body. You'll be fine—athletes just burn through fuel way faster, and sometimes things have nothing to do with food alone.

Lol, well, thanks for making me feel so great... based on what you wrote, I definitely won't be turning into a fanatic, haha...🙂 👍

jadesailor14 said:Anyway, moving on.
Seriously though, why not just hit up another doctor for a second opinion?
There are tons of specialists in New York City who focus specifically on—I don't know, how do I put this—sports orthopedics.
A coworker of mine actually had to deal with knee issues a few years back, and thanks to getting the right treatment, she totally avoided surgery. It was a long road and definitely pricey, but it worked. She’s a guy in his 40s who actually had to be resuscitated three times during a previous procedure, so you can imagine the sheer panic he felt when the doctor gave him an ultimatum: surgery or a wheelchair.

And thanks, mistybear4, for bringing this to the forum. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have picked up on so much useful, smart info.
I'm talking about those comments from the members here who actually know their stuff.

yeah, mistybear4 is the best 👍
and I'm definitely gonna go grab a second opinion 🙄

alexxx said:A buddy of my brother had to get knee surgery because her cartilage was basically worn down—layman's terms, I don't know the exact medical jargon—she's an athlete, though, and she eats meat like it's her job. Also, this girl I went to elementary school with couldn't even handle regular PE class because her knees were shot and "unlubricated" or whatever. She ate meat too.

And honestly, I’m not saying vegetarianism or veganism is inherently a superior way to eat compared to meat. Whatever—people drop dead from fish and dairy all the time, just like they get liver failure from eating greasy burgers. If we started pouring soda over everything instead of beer, you'd see some real issues.. 🙄

Thank God someone finally gets it. Like you said, your friend ate meat... and there you go—surgery.
That's what I'm trying to explain to my family and friends back home... everyone has been coming at me since that day, using lines like, "SEE, THIS IS WHAT YOUR DIET DID TO YOU."😠
Look, I'm not claiming meat is unnecessary for the body, but it definitely isn't the only option.
In my specific case... my cartilage was just worn out and spent!!!
😁Obviously, if I don't see any actual results in about three months, I'll have to force myself to go back to eating meat, regardless of my principles.
Warning! in Health ·
Let me clarify things a bit.......I eat all dairy, eggs maybe rarely—like 3 times a
month if I'm lucky—and fish or calamari is about the same...
My diet is mostly just mixing veggies, legumes, and soy...
with carbs, fruit, etc.
I know going overboard on carbs isn't great either...
So, yeah, I started drinking this Vega Fuel right before I went in for my knee scans.
Why? Because I wanted to build up some muscle—make them denser and tougher—and obviously increase my strength. I noticed that when I was lifting weights, I’d get tired way too fast and lack power
because I felt like some weak little thing with zero muscle in my arms. Then, my nutritionist over on Instagram told me
that using soy protein should help solve that. Of course, I can't see results yet since I've only been on it for 2 weeks. In the meantime, I went to get my knees checked out (I used to do a lot of skiing and tennis)
Basically, my workouts were always on hard surfaces—gym floors and stuff. I haven't been super active for about 7 years now, but issues started popping up; whenever I did something active like biking, rollerblading, or aerobics, I'd feel this dull ache
in my right knee!!! Yeah, basically worn down the cartilage... and then everything just connected. My doctor told me that while I *do* have muscle... IT DOESN'T SERVE ITS PURPOSE. He said it would be smart to put meat back on my menu, and I also know I need to look into other supplements because soy alone isn't cutting it. As for meat, we'll see... I'm not rushing out to grab a burger immediately. But regarding the Vega Fuel, my nutritionist recommended
taking it three times a week given my workout load, about half an hour after... okay, I'm rambling now.
Height 5'8", weight 145lbs
So, that's the deal.....

mistybear4 said:I think you're missing part of the picture—it’s really about both things at once. You need to build up that muscle strength while also supporting your joints (like your knees) with those unsaturated fatty acids—you know, omega-3s... 🙂

That "vege fuel" stuff seems decent enough at first glance—since it's soy-based, which is huge if you aren't eating meat—but honestly, maybe run it by a physical therapist or a sports specialist first.. there are other options out there too:

Also, definitely check with a pro about your actual daily protein needs—don't just wing it based on a hunch.. 😉

I'm not just winging it, I drink that powder after every single workout!!

mistybear4 said:The issue is actually your knee—and honestly, eating a mountain of steak every day isn't going to fix that. You should probably grab a second opinion from a different doctor to see what can actually be done or if there's any rehab you can do for that knee.

But look... the whole idea is that if I want to build up my quad muscle, I need to eat enough protein—like meat
or take supplements. Once that muscle is actually strong,
it won't put all that stress directly on the knee!!! That's really the point here.

Hannah Rogers93 said:If you're eating eggs, dairy, and maybe some fish once in a while, you don't actually need meat.

rustymoose54 said:protein levels are way higher than what you'll find in veggies or grains—plus, proteins are made of amino acids, some of which are essential, meaning our bodies can't make them on their own, so we have to get them from our food.

Vegetarians who cut out all animal products entirely—I'm talking no eggs, no cheese, and definitely no fish—really need to be well-educated on how to balance their meals. I'm not saying a plant-based diet is bad, just that hitting those nutritional sweet spots is a lot more complicated.

That’s why we have pros like nutritionists for a reason. If you're planning to overhaul your diet by ditching entire food groups, honestly, go talk to a professional about the best ways to swap things out. 🙂

thanks... 😁 👍

madwoman said:What’s even the point? Like, what’s so special about cheese and eggs that I should care?🙂

p.s. Hannah Rogers93—honestly, your body is just telling you what it needs. If you’ve noticed anything feeling off since you quit meat, maybe rethink going back to the old ways or just beefing up your diet. I mean, so many people ignore those red flags, end up getting sick, and then let all those "brilliant" doctors act like they were right all along about how you can't survive without meat... (not trying to be a know-it-all though, don't know what came over me today😳 )

I'm gonna wait and see how these protein shakes work out first—maybe add some more variety to my meals. If I don't see any progress, damn, I might have to force myself to eat meat at least once a week. As for how I feel... honestly, I actually feel better... I'm just a little leaner and more toned now—my muscles are okay
they aren't huge anymore, but I'm still staying on top of things. Mostly everything is fine!! And yeah, regarding this whole thing—if there isn't a doctor to help, I'll unfortunately have to go back to how things were

madwoman said:ummm... regarding dairy... maybe try cutting back for a bit? instead, grab more almonds, hazelnuts, spinach, kale, parsley, stuff like that. it's not just tasty—it's packed with calcium too. milk can honestly do more harm than good sometimes..

but hey, I'm no doctor, and I don't always have it figured out😉

thanks,
yeah, eating way too much dairy isn't great—plus it definitely makes you pack on the pounds.
But apparently whey is actually awesome

madwoman said:just go find a different doctor—it’s that easy. because doctors are basically gods who can never be wrong, right?

The fact that millions of vegetarians exist proves you don't actually need animal protein. Or are they just the exception to the rule?

maybe I should... i'll see
thanks anyway—I'm not giving up.
