Hey there,

if you're currently sitting in the red $340. Is it actually possible to grab something on a payment plan despite being overdrawn? Like, using that Visa card from Inspire?

So, I just grabbed some R7 and R9 cards from AMD. It looks like the Radeon R9 270X actually outpaces the 7870, and it’s even cheaper too?

If you've got the cash, the power supply to back it up, and you're worried some "standard" GPU is gonna be total overkill, then go for it, man... just pull the trigger...

Kinda going off on a tangent here, but it looks like at least 60% of the folks on this board (if not more, and honestly probably closer to 😁 ) just buy a high-end card so they don't have to worry about an upgrade for a long time. Just because something feels like overkill today doesn't mean it won't be the sweet spot tomorrow... maybe I'm wrong though 🤷 .

And regarding the power draw, the guy who suggested I grab the Radeon 7850 instead of the 7870 actually did me a huge solid since I wasn't really paying much attention to the wattage requirements 😬 🙂

What does IMO mean?
How can it be overkill? What if some massive AAA title drops tomorrow that needs insane power just to run at 1050p? It doesn't matter if it feels like too much right now... I'm not planning on buying a new GPU for at least two years, after all...

Timothy Kim60 said:you shouldn't run into any issues, the drivers are solid
If you're leaning toward NVIDIA, maybe check out the GTX 650 Ti Boost, or even a GTX 660 if you really want to go for it

I'm not totally sold on the fact that the NVIDIA card is only 192-bit, though...
I ended up pulling the trigger on the XFX Radeon HD 7850 2GB, so we'll see how it handles everything next week🙂

Thanks for all the help!

Timothy Kim60 said:It’s honestly not worth upgrading from your Phenom. Just grab an AMD Radeon HD 7850 and you're good to go. It's a solid GPU, even for 1080p, let alone lower resolutions

I'm actually a bit worried about those ATI drivers. I still remember back when I had a 3850, NFS Underground 2 would run totally smooth at 1680x1050 on max settings. But then some newer game would barely crawl... And the weirdest part was when I rolled back to an older driver, the performance actually got better...🙂

What should I do? Grab a new CPU along with an XFX Radeon HD 7870 or an AMD Radeon HD 7850... or maybe go a different route entirely?
When looking at performance, I've got some fresh ideas for a new CPU and a GPU in that ballpark 😬

Benjamin King2 said:That Phenom can definitely handle a 7970, but if you're just sticking to that resolution, I wouldn't push past an AMD Radeon HD 7850... anything more than that feels like throwing money down the drain. Plus, the AMD Phenom II X6 6300 isn't really much of an upgrade. You might see a tiny bump in some multi-core titles, but most of the time the Phenom will actually perform better. What kind of Corsair power supply are you running?

It's a CMPSU-400XEU.

When a heavy-hitter game finally drops, isn't it better to have the XFX Radeon HD 7870 instead of the 7850? Thinking about the long run here, right?

The XFX Radeon HD 7870 is currently sitting at 30-$$17 more expensive

Lawrence Phillips said:Based on chatting with the guys in this thread, I honestly think 7870 is asking for way too much from a Phenom. If you don't want to just throw money down the drain, sticking with a 7850 or maybe a 650 Ti boost would be the sweet spot...

What about pairing it with an X6 6300 in a van?

Hey there,

I'm looking to pick up a new GPU since I'm currently rocking an Nvidia 6600😁
Here's what I'm running right now:
CPU: x4 965@ 3.8GHz
RAM: 4 gb ddr3
Mobo: some ASUS board, doesn't really matter...
PSU: Corsair 400w

Since my budget is basically tied to whatever I can swipe on my student AMEX, I found this pretty cheap online retailer -> Newegg. Best Buy is also on my radar. Basically, anywhere in the States that takes my AMEX works for me. With that card, I can $667 blow through my cash.
I play at 1680x1050 resolution.
I need some advice... should I grab an XFX 7870 and a fresh PSU—maybe around 500-600W—or do you think my old 400w unit could actually handle it?
Or maybe skip the new PSU entirely and just put that money toward a beefier 7870 or maybe a GTX 660 (either the non-Ti or the Ti version)...

Even though I mostly use this rig for coding, I still jump into games from time to time... stuff like Coda, NFS, Battlefield, and GTA IV etc.
Thanks for the help!

Can someone walk me through how these student loans actually work?
Like, could I even pull one off if I'm currently unemployed, on a payment deferment, and looking to start paying it back only after four years pass?

driftingmarlin70 said:You can't run Vista or even Windows 7 on 512 MB of RAM. You should just go back to XP.

Man, you clearly have no clue... 😁
Back about two years ago, I actually managed to get Vista running on a Socket A rig. I had an Athlon 2000+, 384 MB of SDRAM, and a Radeon 9200 with 64 MB... and hey, it worked. Installed it perfectly fine... but honestly, I ripped it out after about six hours because I decided Vista was just total garbage... 😁
DIY Liposuction? in Hobbies & Leisure ·
So, here's what I'm thinking... is it actually possible to pull off some DIY liposuction at home? Like, could you just grab a slightly larger syringe with a sterile needle, pop it into the subcutaneous fat, and just... suck it all out?

You can grab it right here

Don't even think about overclocking yet, man. You won't gain anything. Wait until you get that new rig set up and you're totally comfortable with everything... then you can push it as hard as your heart desires.

That’s exactly the plan 😁 once I finally pull the trigger on the new build... just building up the nerve right now...🙂 thx 😉

wiredmarlin5 said:I can't get your image to load, but you probably have one of those older AMD chips (I'm rocking a Pentium 4 myself) and those things just aren't built for overclocking, so you might be better off calling it quits.

Which benchmark are we talking about?

3DMark, lol... I've got like 2000+ Athlons lying around, they run fine at 1.69 GHz ^^
As for overclocking the RAM, I've got two identical sticks (256MB - 166MHz), so they should play nice together...🙂

Hey -> since this is basically the sanctuary for overclockers 🙂 I wanted to pick your brains about something. I've got this CPU http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/1606/rgrgr0.jpg...and my stock FSB speeds in the BIOS are sitting at 133... man, I really want to push this thing, obviously, but here's the deal: if I try to bump it up to 139 or 140, the whole system just hits a wall. Like, the fans spin up and everything sounds fine, but it won't boot at all. No luck there. I can always get back to the defaults by resetting the BIOS, but I can't seem to squeeze out any more speed... anyone know why I'm hitting this limit? Help me out here :S
