Did Jane Doe go under? I honestly can't remember the last time they actually had a movie playing in their theaters. General Motors has actually stepped up lately—they've been showing stuff like Hunger and Class—and even AMC Theatres hosted the Sundance Film Festival, along with that week of Czech cinema...

People only seem to care about Art films when they’re part of a festival circuit—once they hit the regular rotation, the theaters are usually empty. I sat through Haneke’s Funny Games U. S. with maybe two other people in the room; Synecdoche, New York had a pathetic turnout too, and Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises was just as bad, etc., etc...
We just don't have much of a tradition when it comes to genre filmmaking—if you don't count the occasional passion project from some hobbyist. In this country, it’s either a gritty drama or a sitcom; there isn't really a middle ground.

An absolute masterpiece—pure cinematic magic. I'm actually planning on rewatching it today; just picked up the Blu-ray copy.
3D projection vs. prescription glasses

I wanted to grab my parents tickets for Avatar 3D—they haven't stepped foot in an AMC Theatres in about 20 years—but they both wear glasses, so now I'm stuck...
Good call. Might gift some tickets to a buddy myself. The older crowd shouldn't run into any issues wearing the 3D glasses over their regular frames.

Richard Hill10 said:Yeah, I seriously don't get this whole glasses thing. Like, am I supposed to be able to watch Avatar 3D without them? I haven't really dealt with this before so I have no clue... can someone just explain how this works?
thanks
For a 3D projection, you absolutely need the glasses—otherwise, the image is just a blurry mess. You grab them at the theater. They usually offer a 2D version too; you don't need glasses for that, but you lose out on the impact. I caught Avatar 3D yesterday—it's genuinely impressive. Definitely worth the price of admission.

GBG was easily one of the standout films of the year. The Magdalena Sisters is also a solid piece of work—that performance by Peter Mullan is something else.
Why I can't stand Adam Sandler (Part 2)

Sandler is terrible—I avoid his comedies at all costs. Easily the least talented comedian working today...

Ben Affleck actually caught me off guard with Gone Baby Gone. He might actually have some staying power...

That's such a bummer. Apparently, a new AMC Theatres is opening up near Savannah late in 2009, but I can't seem to find where exactly!!!
And man, those 4D and 6D experiences are absolutely incredible!!!!!
I wouldn't go so far as to say it's opening this year. You really ought to see Carol in 3D; it's actually quite impressive.

My Bloody Valentine 3D just hit the shelves here on DVD. They even throw in the glasses with it.

Filming is set to take place in Miami, focusing mostly on night scenes.

I’ve always been a huge fan of his full-length debut, The Deadly Companions, starring Maureen O'Hara.

If you ask me, this poll is way too broad. You could pull ten absolute masterpieces just from 1950 alone. A decade is a massive stretch when we're talking about world cinema.

I’m voting for L.A. Confidential—one of the absolute best Hollywood flicks from the 90s (honestly, it sits near the top of my all-time favorites list). On the flip side, palmin Black Dahlia was a total disaster for me; easily one of the biggest disappointments I've ever sat through.
A Christmas Carol (2009)

I caught it—solid enough. Visually, it’s a knockout, but let’s be honest: it doesn't break any new ground. It’s just a literal take on the Charles Dickens classic. If you're going to hit the theater, do yourself a favor and see it in 3D—otherwise, don't even bother.

He’s actually pulling decent reviews. This should be a guaranteed hit for the pre-Christmas season.
Where the Wild Things Are (2009)

It doesn't look like it's hitting our theaters; there's zero mention of it in the upcoming previews. Such a shame.
