Chinatown (1974) - Roman Polanski in Movies ·
Paramount Pictures has announced they're adding Chinatown to their Centennial Collection—it’ll come packed with extra features, including an audio commentary featuring Robert Towne and special guest David Fincher.

A Beautiful Mind is easily one of the worst winners of an Oscar. It’s such a calculated, manufactured movie. Honestly, seeing it take the prize over films like Moulin Rouge!, In the Bedroom, Gosford Park, and The Two Towers—all of which were objectively superior—was a joke.
Trey Parker & Matt Stone's BASEketball in Movies ·
northerncrane4 said:Surprisingly bad. Honestly, even "Cannibal! The Musical" was a dud for me—and I didn't even sit through the whole thing with "Captain Orgasma."

Agreed. Both BASEketball and Orgazmo are bad movies.
Hannibal Rising (2007) in Movies ·
A massive disappointment. A total dud of a Disney production—and the casting for Hannibal was an absolute train wreck.
Sundance Film Festival 2009 in Movies ·
San Francisco will be hosting the US premieres for both the new Harry Potter and Michael Mann's Public Enemies.
Hayao Miyazaki in Movies ·
Does anyone know when Miyazaki's new film Ponyo will finally hit theaters here in the States? It was supposed to screen at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, but the producers blocked it—they were demanding a full American English dub first.
Is Michael Bay actually a bad director? in Movies ·
Look, I get it—his movies are clearly designed as massive cash grabs. But for heaven's sake, he could at least put some effort into character development. The characters in his films are nothing more than caricatures—take Anthony Anderson in Transformers, for example. It's exhausting. That said, if we're talking about his actual work, The Island is probably his best shot.
Is Michael Bay actually a bad director? in Movies ·
Bay's movies are basically just two-hour music videos. He doesn't care about anything besides explosions and special effects—period. His stuff didn't used to be this bad, but I recently sat through Armageddon and Transformers again and honestly, I could barely make it to the end.
POLL: Best Picture of the 1970s? in Movies ·
The Sting is a decent flick—solid, but nothing more than that.
Looney Tunes: Back in Action in Movies ·
I just sat through Bah Humduck: A Looney Tunes Christmas—which was titled something ridiculous over here—and honestly? It’s terrible. Just plain awful. It feels completely disconnected from the DNA of the original Looney Tunes...
Marcus Niespiel has been tapped to direct the Conan remake—the same guy behind projects like Pathfinder and the Friday the 13th remake. He did handle a decent version of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but I’m still not buying it.
Digitized American Classics in Movies ·
Eric Jackson68 said:I absolutely agree with your questions—they’re exactly what I've been wondering too. We need to implement this on a much larger scale, not just limit it to DirecTV.

Blu-ray and DVD collections up for grabs! Get them while they last.

Look, it wasn't for nothing that AT&T footed the bill for the restoration and digitization process—it was an investment. Now, they hold the exclusive rights to broadcast it. Simple as that.
Check out the French film Red Light while you can..
Directors who totally missed the mark in Movies ·
Alan Parker.
Moulin Rouge! by Baz Luhrmann in Movies ·
Watch out for Baz Luhrmann’s directing style. The movie holds together reasonably well until about the halfway mark—then it completely devolves into something like Titanic by James Cameron. It's honestly surprising how cliché-ridden the whole thing is.

wiredbison82 said:Call me a heretic if you want, but Smith hit his stride with Clerks and everything else since then has just felt like overreaching. Some filmmakers capture lightning in a bottle with their debut; anything they attempt afterward is essentially just trying to catch shadows.

You nailed it with "excess." Jay and Silent Bob strike back was terrible, Dogma ambitious comedy, and Jersey Girl was just too sugary. Honestly, Merchant 2 was actually decent.
The Last House on the Left in Movies ·
It hit theaters here today. Anyone caught a screening yet? A buddy of mine claims it’s one of the better horror flicks to come out lately.
Chinatown (1974) - Roman Polanski in Movies ·
Recently caught Two Jakes—Jack Nicholson still delivers a solid performance. It’s a decent enough film, though obviously lacks the spark of Roman Polanski's original masterpiece.
The Blues Brothers in Movies ·
It’s just hilarious watching John Belushi get out of prison only for Frank Oz to hand him that used condom... Now you've got Lloyd Landis suing Michael Jackson while they both direct some random TV projects...
Amy Fox4 said:I guess it's just plain stupid to even compare originals to remakes, mostly because of the massive gap in eras and budgets. Most of the classics come from the 70s or 80s and they have their own charm, sure, but remakes spark new interest and are made with way more money, looking much sleeker with better effects and more polish. We could argue about quality forever, but there are some genuinely great remakes out there—take the 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre, My Bloody Valentine 3D, or Friday the 13th, for instance. Then you have the ones that are just mediocre, I suppose, like Black Christmas and Halloween.

Nobody is claiming that good remakes don't exist. However—and this is the point—all the money and flashy special effects in the world didn't help Donaldson with his remake of Peckinpah's Escape, nor did it help Richet with his remake of the Police attack. Compared to the originals, those films are just pathetic.
