Kill me now, but hasn't there already been an EXACTLY identical thread about this? 🤔

Or maybe I just swapped over to a different forum or saw it on some news site. 😕
Roger Wood50 said:Arnold Schwarzenegger absolutely crushes it.👋

He went from being a total badass in Commando to being a Governor. I guess life comes full circle, huh?😁

And he even saved Mars... you know, like The Red Planet, back in The Whole Wide World. 😁
dustyscout53 said:There isn't even any Jack Nicholson here.
There’s absolutely nothing left... No sun... No moon... Nothing at all. 😁 😁

Jack will show up once we actually start making a list of the world's worst criminals. 😁 (Alright, alright... I get it... he's not your typical cartoonish villain, except maybe in Batman, but he can be pretty ruthless when he needs to be 😁)
Al Pacino 😕

Robert De Niro 😕

Look, guys... maybe call me when those two actually manage to save the world from superpowered aliens, or take down some killer machine sent back from the future, or even protect a major US city from criminals dressed up as Batman. Then we can talk. 🙂 🙂

I guess some people on this thread have just completely lost their minds. 🙄 🙂 😁
Someone mentioned my guy: Christopher Reeve 😁 *supermansmajlić*

nimblemarlin17> I guess George Lucas went overboard with Star Wars, using special effects for basically every single scene. Even when they weren't even needed. You just end up with this plastic-looking CGI movie that doesn't leave anyone feeling anything because we've ALL seen it before.

"We've all seen it before"??? 😕

Kill me now, but I honestly can't think of a single live-action movie before, say, Minority Report where they had a fully CG character throughout the entire film that actually looked good—like, genuinely good. And don't even get me started on Attack of the Clones.

Now, whether that stuff impressed people, looked cool, or left them totally cold... I guess that’s down to individual taste and how much someone knows about film. But the fact remains that Lucas was the pioneer here. It might not mean much to us, but it certainly meant something to him and his bank account. That’s pretty much the whole philosophy behind Episode 1 and 2.

If I can just jump in here to push back a bit on what was said regarding George Lucas and the stuff about PM and ABC.

It’s not really accurate to say those movies were total disasters; I think it’s more about the expectations people had (which is basically what Richard Hernandez13 was getting at).

I guess we all pretty much expected them to feel just like the original Star Wars films, but George Lucas had already done that—he’d already told his story.

It seems like all he really wanted was to be "the first" to try something new, which is why we ended up with that annoying Jar-Jar Binks, and why we got that whole army of robots made with CGI that actually look real. And honestly, that’s probably why those movies hold a specific place in cinematic history.

I'm finally getting around to meeting up with my wife today to hand him the movie. 😁 He's just... busy. It's honestly been pretty tough to track him down. 🙄 😛 😁

restlessmarlin6 said:I have to say, Asterix vs. Julius Caesar is easily the best one out of everything they've shown on PBS! 🙂

Me too. 👍

I guess I just feel like that old voting system was way, way better than what we have now.

I remember when they used to take us to the movie theater to watch that one back in preschool.

restlessmarlin6 said:Where can I actually find some GOOD Japanese animation? And I mean stuff that isn't just for adults.

So, look... most of the good stuff is really aimed at an older crowd anyway. Or maybe you mean "for adults," like, in that sense? I guess. 🙂 😁

Shoot me a PM.

I was thinking about one particular fantasy film today...

It’s a bit older, I think it came out around '86 if I recall correctly, and it's called The Flight of Dragons.

So, I watched that thing a long, long, long, long time ago. I was just a kid back then—probably even bigger than I am now, I guess. 😁...and honestly, I still remember it pretty vividly.

Anyway, I finally sat down today, remembered the title, and tracked down a few links. It looks like everyone is saying the exact same thing: that the movie is absolute garbage. It’s funny, really. Everyone seems to be following this identical script along the lines of, "Man, when I first saw this, I thought it was great, but now? I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole." It's pretty interesting how that works. 🤔

I mean, I guess I’m mostly just wondering what my life would even look like today.

Here’s the link, in case anyone actually cares. FotD

Yeah, right. Everyone here is busy typing out these long-winded essays, yet the guy who actually started the thread hasn't said a single word. I guess he's just staying quiet while we all go at it. 😁

I don't know, she just comes across as incredibly irritating and arrogant to me... ever since "Fast & Furious." 👎>

Richard Hernandez13 said:I didn't think Shrek was all that great.

It just wasn't pure Humor—

Regarding the Humor, and a bunch of other things in Shrek.

What really got under my skin was how unbalanced the whole thing felt, and the comedy was where that imbalance was most obvious.

Basically, we were looking at a textbook example of the flaw found in many big-studio American animated films. They’re built for kids, yet they try way too hard to appeal to adults, solely with the goal of dragging more people into theaters to grab their cash. That's why you feel this constant lack of balance throughout the entire movie. (If you want to interpret that as a lack of direction, you can 😂 ).

For instance... there were several moments in Shrek where they leaned into what people call "penis jokes." Look, I don't have an issue with them, despite the fact that those kinds of "jokes" are considered a lower form of comedy. BECAUSE, if they're used correctly, at the right moment, and with actual purpose, then they can actually be 👍. (Just so nobody thinks I'm one of those people who believes kids' cartoons have to be perfectly wholesome 🙄 )

So, I guess I have to ask you guys: what's the point of dropping a joke like that—especially a veiled one—that kids don't even stand a chance of getting??? There isn't one. And because of that, we get these moments throughout the film where something just pops out and breaks the entire concept of the movie. (And that's not even touching on the other issues Richard Hernandez13 already pointed out).

I just watched the teaser for the sequel... I honestly can't wait to see this hit theaters!
Here’s the link... I guess you can just check it out for yourselves. Shrek 2

Oh God... are they seriously making another sequel to that disaster? 😲

Just when I thought those haters had finally learned their lesson, I actually have a little extra cash on hand, so now I’m feeling like grabbing even more.

I guess Shrek 2 finally got the ending it actually deserved, just like the first one did. 👎 (Or even better, like The Jungle Book 2) 😂 )

John Booth said:Personally, I think the Asterix and Obelix comics are way better than the movies.
What about you guys?

Hmm... I don't know. The first movie wasn't actually bad, I guess, but maybe I just watched it a few too many times. 🙄

nimblecanyon61 said:I have to admit, I think you guys are exaggerating a bit. There are plenty of worse movies out there, even within this specific genre.
I don't really feel like quoting every single sentence to respond to them right now (look at the time), so I'll just say my one defense for the movie is that it was actually based on a game.
So, go ahead and compare it to Mortal Kombat, or maybe even Lara Croft, and then you'll see that it's actually a decent entry for this kind of flick.

I'm signing off on this, though I'd argue it isn't necessarily better than the first Mortal Kombat movie. 🙂
I still maintain that this is one of the best films ever made from a video game. (Keep in mind the game doesn't even have a plot, 😂)

Plus, Lara is better... if nothing else, we get to watch the gorgeous Angelina Jolie. 👍

@CNN
I watched this movie about a year ago, and "objectively" speaking, I more or less agree with what was written above. But look, the movie is just "boys & guns." What were you expecting? Some high-concept sci-fi masterpiece? Or maybe a perfect recreation of the game's atmosphere? No way, no chance, non how.

In my humble opinion, the film feels soulless primarily because it fails to build any real atmosphere, and since viewers can't take it seriously anyway, there are zero expectations. After two hours, you're left feeling like it wouldn't even matter if you had watched it or not. 🙄

CNN > *That's exactly why* movies of this caliber are so catastrophically terrible.

Man, that sounds like you're saying it's impossible to make a good movie based on a video game, which is nowhere near the truth.

The problem is that studios usually only bother adapting those "cheap-thrill" type games. 👎

Richard Hernandez13 said:It’s basically an animated omnibus.
Just a bunch of loosely connected stories that vary wildly in animation style and quality. They're all based on comics from that Heavy Metal magazine by Kevin Eastman.

One of the more famous ones is Richard Corben's "Day," which I remember seeing in Strip Magazine.

Yeah, yeah... I know. I was just asking because I wasn't entirely sure if that was the one being talked about.

Ugh... man, that was a long time ago. 🤔

Anyway, does anyone here actually know what the deal is with the animated movie selection at our local video rental stores?

I never even bother asking, honestly, because I already know my local spots either have nothing at all, or they only carry the absolute latest releases.

Maria Morris5 said:Those Asterix and Obelix cartoons are just awful. They totally ruined the comics for me!!!! The original comic books are where it's at.

Hmm... I mean, let's be honest, most animated movies based on comics or manga aren't actually better than the original source material. But I guess that doesn't necessarily mean they're garbage or not worth a watch.

Is this that old-school version from the 80s, or maybe even earlier?

Maybe some kind of dark fantasy mixed with horror elements?

So, apparently the American dub for "The Lion King" isn't any good.

Hmm...🤔...I guess I might take the risk and watch it just once. Even though I know it won't even come close to the original... I mean, having Jeremy Irons voicing Scar... HELLO?! I don't think anyone in our country could ever top that performance.

To be fair, my past experiences with American dubs have been pretty solid. For instance, I actually think "The Flintstones" or "Raccoons" turned out better than the originals.

On the flip side, you had FOX and Kristijan Ugrina coming along with what might be the worst dubs in human history.🙂

restlessmarlin6 said:Asterix and Obelix are just fantastic, all of them! I recently revisited them and honestly, they blew me away all over again. There's so much humor and the animation is great. Highly recommend!

Yeah, yeah, yeah... Asterix and Obelix will probably be airing on some major network again around the holidays.

I guess my only gripe is how they swapped out that original voice cast from the 90s or even earlier. It's a shame.
