Robert Cooper41 said:Honestly, if a movie starts and ends with the music of Kevin Shields (ex My Bloody Valentine), there is just no way it can be any kind of bad. It’s basically a guarantee at that point! 😁 😁

The FM4 station I listen to over here actually has this one show called... Guest room Imagine this scenario where a celebrity guest gets the mic for about an hour to spin whatever tracks they feel like playing. Just last month, our DJ was actually the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola, and let me tell you, she really proved that she has some incredibly interesting musical taste.

Susan Wright12 said:... in this instance, we're talking about objective (un)quality.

Actually, no...

...it's more about a subjective impression.
Another thing that really trips me up is the idea that someone can take their own personal perception and claim it's somehow "better" or "more correct" than what someone else experienced. 🙂

...

A quick side note: why am I peppering this with emojis? Well, if I've learned anything from chatting on this forum, it's that if you don't strategically place enough smiley faces when you're presenting an opinion that's the polar opposite of someone else's, they won't see it as an invitation to chat. Instead, they'll take it as a personal attack on their worldview, an insult to their very soul, and a direct affront to their entire family tree going back fifteen generations. Once that happens, instead of having a deep, meaningful discussion, you just end up in a massive flame war. This weird phenomenon probably exists because we lack the non-verbal cues of face-to-face communication, and emojis are basically our best substitute for all that body language. 🙂

You might notice I popped an emoji after that previous thought and one right after this sentence. 😉

Susan Wright12 said:...where we can view geographic displacement as a metaphor for human displacement within a technological landscape (like a little existentialism seminar from Sofia Coppola)

I'm sorry, but this feels more like Susan Wright12's little school of existentialism to me. 😉

Honestly, I think the woman just portrayed a simple encounter between an aging actor going through a midlife crisis and a young woman dealing with an absentee husband. Why does everything have to get so complicated with these overly deep interpretations and critical overkill? It’s always amused me how people have this innate urge—is it an urge? I suppose so—to see one thing and insist it's actually something entirely different.

Man, those old Disney classics still look absolutely incredible!
If I recall correctly, the last truly great Disney film was "The Little Mermaid."

The Little Mermaid isn't actually that old Disney movie. 🤔

That was really more like the opening signal for the Disney renaissance in the early nineties, which was largely driven by Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg (who happens to be running animation over at DreamWorks these days). That era paved the way for Beauty and the Beast, then Aladdin (which came out long before Andy Serkis, though everyone was buzzing back then about whether Robin Williams could snag an Oscar), leading up to the absolute peak with The Lion King, before things started sliding toward mediocrity with Pocahontas.

But honestly, throughout the latter half of the nineties and right up to now, they had the Pixar studio in their corner. Sadly, Steve Jobs just announced that in 2005, they're cutting ties with Disney to go looking for a new partner. It feels like losing a major cash cow—even if Disney still gets to keep the Pixar back catalog, plus two more films and the rights to sequels for the movies they made together ( Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Finding Nemo).

If I had to point out a prime example of overacting in a recent American film, I’d have to go with Peter Krelja in Below the Line—honestly, I think I’ve seen enough hammy performances in that one to last me a lifetime, even if I’ll admit there were a few decent moments scattered in there somewhere.

The standout for me is Anja Šovagović, playing the despot who flails her arms around like she’s actually trying to take flight; on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, you have Rakan Rushaidat, who is just pure phlegm, acting like he’s taken way too many sedatives.

Here is a page dedicated to Bushism, and these right here are some of those
Quayle-esque gems.

In my neck of the woods, acting—and art in general—tends to be way too overmystified. It feels like everyone working in the industry carries themselves with this incredibly hoh und nobl attitude.

I’ve really been enjoying watching Ian McKellen play Gandalf in Lord of the Rings. The guy has decades of experience on the stage and is practically a legendary icon of the theater. While he doesn't have a massive filmography, he’s put together an enviable string of roles lately. What I love most is that he truly understands the nuance between performing on stage versus being in front of a camera; he’s humble enough to admit that he still feels like a novice who has so much left to learn about film acting.

...
By the way, regarding this: I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good judgments in the future. That quote wasn't actually said by Dubey, but rather by Dan Quayle—the Vice President under his father, who remains one of the absolute dimmest politicians in American history. People constantly misattribute that line to George W. Bush.

There’s just something about hearing someone let out a perfectly articulated, high-drama string of American profanities that really hits the spot for me.

1. Which actor was originally lined up to take on the role of Anakin Skywalker before they eventually went with Hayden Christensen?

It wasn't just one person, either—there were quite a few names floating around, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Joshua Jackson...

2. What’s the common thread connecting the newer Star Wars trilogies and Lord of the Rings?

Could it be Christopher Lee?

3. What happened to Mark Hamill that almost kept him from appearing in episodes 5 and 6?

Nature just wasn't on his side that day.😁

4. In which recent movie do we get to see both Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher together on screen?

Jay and Silent Bob strike back

Well, try answering them without peeking at Google—to be honest, I'll admit that I'm totally stumped by fadedsailor932's questions.

Oh man, a Star Wars trivia quiz?

Alright, here are a few questions I've cooked up for you...

1. What's the name of Kashyyyk?
2. What kind of alien species is Greedo?
3. Which alien species does Admiral Ackbar belong to?
4. In one weird, unofficial American fan dub, how did they jokingly "rechristen" Chewbacca?
6. What's the name of Luke's wingman through all three major battles?
7. What exactly does the phrase "Bantha poodoo" mean?😁
8. Looking at the X-wing, Y-wing, A-wing, and B-wing: which one of these wasn't actually featured in the film?

That's just classic Van Damme for you: Jean-Claude Van Damme aka Jean-Claude Van Damme

If I remember correctly, the dialogue in that scene pretty much boils down to "Now I'm gonna screw you," which is just so typical of his style.
