That's a fantastic idea
Everyone wants sympathy... but do we really owe it to everyone? in Psychology & Therapy ·

We hang out with people because it's supposed to make us feel better than being alone, right? Offering comfort is great. But if you're constantly playing therapist for someone who always needs a shoulder to cry on, you're going to end up burned out and depressed. And honestly? It doesn't even help the person seeking the sympathy in the long run.

Exactly. It’s just a loop. You end up spinning your wheels while the actual problems just sit there, totally unresolved.

Yeah... I guess so... though lately, I've been leaning more toward long stretches of time out in nature and hitting the trails on my bike a ton.

darksurfer4 said:Look, you can't just "leave memories behind," because if you actually did that, they wouldn't be memories anymore. Honestly, everything you're saying sounds like that New Age nonsense pushed by Ana Bučević.

Yeah... I mean, life is life. You've gotta stay aware of it all.

Life isn't some giant lottery. Sometimes we lose, sometimes we win. Think about it—maybe those losses are just setting the stage for the big wins coming down the road.

It’s not like all five years were a total wash... I definitely had some good stretches in there. About three years ago, I hit a patch where things actually felt right for a few months—better work, a solid team, and my personal life was pretty steady too.

I actually had something similar happen even earlier, for a couple of months... but yeah, that's how it went.

Yeah... I’ve been cutting back on the booze lately, and honestly, I'm drinking way less than I used to. My diet isn't exactly top-tier either, mostly because work has just been non-stop... but oh, man... I think my own thoughts are just wearing me down. It feels like this constant, subconscious pressure is weighing on me, you know? Like I'm always trying to force myself to fit in with everyone else.

I'm just too sensitive sometimes, and it really holds me back.

It’s about:

- my focus just isn't what it used to be; I'm drifting way more often

- a massive hit to my motivation (honestly, sometimes it takes me longer than five minutes just to psych myself up to walk into a Starbucks)

- I'm meeting new people a lot less frequently nowadays

- hitting a wall—or maybe just feeling burnt out—with certain acquaintances or friends. It's getting harder to tell who's actually a true friend, you know? People are drifting away... some just stop responding to texts even though I see they've read them. And the messages are basically the same as always. Maybe I'm sounding a bit too downbeat here, though...

- just generally losing interest in picking up new hobbies or even getting back into the ones I used to be pretty good at

Are you feeling weighed down by guilt or maybe a bit of shame lately?

Yeah, all the time, honestly... I look at myself and just feel like I'm never quite ready to make the big calls life throws at me.

Is it possible one part of you is blaming another part for messing up and causing embarrassment? Or maybe there's a whole civil war going on inside you, where different sides just can't seem to forgive each other?

That's it exactly, Carl Rivera43... so much old baggage from the past. Over the next few days, I'm going to try to sit down and really dig into the facts.

My biggest struggle is honestly just how much I let things get to me. I tend to take everything way too personally. I’ve noticed some people acting pretty cold toward me lately, and whenever that happens, it actually starts to mess with my head and my physical energy

...seriously, don't go there......

Why even use those kinds of words? What, are we going to swap lives? You want my computer and phone, I send you mine, and we just trade gear for a month or something?!

wearybadger6

...Try to catch yourself when things start spiraling like that, so you can just focus on the here and now...

Yeah... those are solid ideas, and I definitely notice them... especially on days when I can actually stay focused. It’s like my thoughts start flowing better again... like I can finally see reality for what it really is.

Between this forum and my phone being incredibly sluggish lately, I’ve been trying to spend way less time staring at screens. When I actually do manage to log on, though, I try to make sure I don't lose my train of thought before I can get it all down.

Overthinking what’s already in the rearview mirror feels a lot like dodging whatever is sitting right in front of you. Am I hitting the mark there?

my take
Maybe. Honestly, certain themes from way back keep popping up in my dreams too, even before things got heavy. It’s like life follows some weird, unpredictable pattern. I spent way too much energy on these intense, specific relationships, and maybe I just realized a bit too late that some people weren't being real with me.

Toughen up a little.

my response

Look, I'm not a robot. I don't have a subscription to "extreme toughness" or "complete softness." Every moment in life has its own authenticity, and that's probably why it sticks around.

I feel like that's impossible unless you're using technology from Total Recall. Wouldn't you say things just wouldn't happen if you didn't experience them?
Personally, I love it.
I don't know how it works, but my brain just seems to hardwire itself to skip over the bad stuff.

my impression

I don't know, I think it's more logical—more natural, really—to talk about the sad emotions. Maybe not all the time, but those days come. We aren't robots. We have needs, feelings, habits, ideas... we have an entire ocean of this stuff. So why not dive in and analyze it?
Troubling memories in Psychology & Therapy ·
......Honestly, if you get a group together to talk about anything from 15 or 20 years ago, you'll quickly realize everyone is living in a completely different reality...

Spot on. There’s just so much stuff out there... and man, it is hard to keep up with how fast this world moves lately. It's exhausting, isn't it?

...Plus, being way too hard on yourself just creates a massive headache. "It could have been this way" or "I should have done that." As far as I can tell, we're stuck on one single timeline that isn't budging. From the perspective of physics, psychology, history, or even philosophy—everything had to happen exactly the way it did. It was inevitable, really.

Yeah... and that part hurts. It stings because I know so much more could have been different if people just had a bit more self-confidence.

Every single day, I make a point to tell myself what I’m grateful for. It could be anything—a beautiful sunny day, a great meal, seeing a cute dog while out for a walk, or just noticing the vibrant colors of flowers on a balcony or along the sidewalk. Just try to focus on the good things.

I really can't stand arguments or unnecessary drama. As soon as things start heating up, I just step away. There’s absolutely no point in wasting my time or energy on that kind of thing. 🙂

Yeah... except lately, those sad thoughts have been creeping into my dreams too... and day after day, it feels like things are heading in a pretty dark direction.

Yeah, honestly, it all depends on what’s going on around me... I feel like I’m just drifting through this weird phase right now, where my energy levels are basically non-existent,

But look, I still make sure to stay grateful for all the good stuff out there... Maybe it’s just the fact that summer is creeping up on me? This late spring feels so different from the ones I remember... It brings up all that nostalgia. You know? When you start thinking about how things could have turned out better if you’d just handled certain situations differently or made better calls back then... I definitely tend to be too hard on myself sometimes..

Do you ever feel like your brain is just... too full? Like there are way too many thoughts running at once?

What can you actually do about it? How do you rewire yourself to stop those ugly, depressing memories from constantly popping up?

I’ve always been a pretty sensitive guy. I really don't do well with pressure, and honestly, I can't stand conflict. Watching people argue just drains me.

I've noticed lately that all these heavy, depressive memories are hitting me way too often. Any tips on how to regulate that?

Have you ever been having a perfectly great day, and then you run into someone who is just absolutely radiating heavy emotional energy? They start dumping all their problems on you, and the more they vent, the more you find yourself drowning in empathy for them?

Yeah, honestly, all the time. We live in an era where everyone is venting. Now, I don’t mind someone sharing real struggles—you know, serious stuff like family drama, work stress, or health issues. But the problem is when people complain about trivial nonsense, like the weather being bad or some club being closed. It's that constant, exaggerated complaining that gets exhausting.

Ever had a cup of coffee and suddenly felt restless, sweaty, or hit with a wave of anxiety?

It happens sometimes, especially when people constantly interrupt you, bring up weird topics out of nowhere, or just ramble on endlessly about something that could have been said in two sentences.

Do you find it hard to set healthy boundaries in your relationships?

It’s incredibly tough. I honestly never know if someone is going to get offended by what I say or if they’ll actually be inspired to keep the conversation going.
The issue is that some people are just super sensitive. And since I can be even more sensitive than they are sometimes, it makes smooth communication feel like a minefield.

Do you ever struggle with feeling like you don't truly belong?

All the time. Mostly because of how things were back in my younger years—especially during high school and those first few years after graduation. Later on, moving from one job to another, that desperate urge to fit in and make up for lost time was often way too intense, and let's face it, that bothered some people too.
