When is "being polite" just too much? in Psychology ·
Matthew Adams4 said:I’m sticking to my guns on this one: you can't really be "overly" polite. You either have manners or you don't.

Hey, you're totally entitled to your opinion! But honestly? I think most people out there are going to disagree with you on that one.

Sure, people like that are few and far between. But honestly, the real question is how they handle things when they actually lose their cool and get seriously pissed off?

A weekend would be a much better call.

But not this Saturday, because I'm heading out with the USA crew for a hike over toward Columbus.

If there actually are people who are genuinely, deeply kind, they make up a tiny fraction of the crowd.

So, I don't see what's so controversial about saying most "overly polite" people are just being fake.

Within that group of fakes, you’ve still got different types—some are totally aggressive, while others are just moderately pushy.

Look, you have to realize one thing: that overly sweet, polite vibe you see in American movies? For a huge chunk of people living here in the States, it just doesn't land. It's not interesting.

It’s not even a big deal.

We'll just go out and grab some lamps.

It isn't that there’s some fundamental flaw in my character, nor am I sitting here questioning my own sanity. I simply live by a certain philosophy—let the rest of the world rush itself into an early grave; I’ll be taking my time.

The real issue is that I seem to be finding fewer and fewer kindred spirits these days. These "fast-paced" types just don't get it. It leads to endless debates and petty arguments, which ultimately just drives us all further into isolation.
If it weren't for this forum, I truly don't know where I'd turn. I'd be completely adrift. 🙂

Those "fast" people don't understand you because, most of the time, they just don't want to put in the effort to see things from a different perspective.

On top of that, I've noticed that the "fast" crowd tends to nitpick everything, yet they love to label us "slow" ones as lazy.

But hey, luckily, I mostly hang out with the "slow" crowd. We get along great. And sure, sometimes they're a little too slow for me, but I don't feel the need to complain about it.

We might as well just save the dessert for later anyway.

I’ve met my fair share of people who are just way, way too polite.

But honestly? I’ve noticed a lot of them are pretty two-faced. They have this blatant knack for sucking up to anyone they think is higher up on the social ladder.

Once the "cameras" are off and they're just talking one-on-one, their whole vibe shifts completely. If they get the chance, they don't hesitate to talk down to anyone they consider "beneath" them.

When you hire a contractor to work on your house or fix up the yard, even if they act a bit crude once in a while, most of the time there’s no bad intent behind it.

That’s honestly why I tend to trust them more than those high-and-mighty professionals who act all fancy but lack any real kindness.

Honestly, I’d take a little bit of attitude over someone being fake-nice any day of the week.

Plus, isn't it funny how those people who act all sweet and polite to everyone's face are often the exact same ones who are secretly harboring a massive amount of resentment?

We could even jump on this earlier if enough people are actually feeling the hype.

Well, maybe in about two weeks?

It was actually pretty lovely out there.

Feeling much better now that my congestion is clearing up, especially with all this sunshine today. Wish it had been like this yesterday, though. Instead, we just got stuck with those gloomy clouds and that chilly wind.

I say, let’s hear it for them!

A national anthem is more than just music; it’s a symbol of our people and everything we've been through. Why wouldn't you cheer?

Well, I'm in my early 20s, so I guess there's still plenty of us left out there, right?

Hey there.

The weather is absolutely gorgeous right now—let's hope it stays this way! I'll catch you guys in about an hour.

As far as I'm concerned, if you guys feel like swinging by, please do!

If you think you might be running a bit behind schedule, just give us a heads-up, okay?

I mean, if you were just looking in from the outside, you’d probably assume we’ve been friends for ages.

And honestly, spending all this time on a forum actually changes how you talk to people in person, too.

So, here's the plan. Once we get settled in, I was thinking we could kick things off with something lighthearted—maybe some thoughts on the Ice Bucket Challenge or checking out that song by Happy? From there, we can just drift into all sorts of casual topics. It’ll feel like we’ve been hanging out for years, right? And honestly, it's pretty true, since everything you post here leaves a permanent mark.

Now I sound just like those old commercials for Fire Valley saying "We came to leave a Tragedy!"

Alright, we’re almost there. Just a little bit longer.

What else can I say? Hmm. Honestly, I’ve got a ton of thoughts swirling around right now, but you know what? I think I'll save most of it for when we actually hang out tomorrow.
