As a massive fan of the book, I mostly viewed the movie through the lens of the original text. Some parts rubbed me the wrong way, mainly because my mental image of Wonka was so different...
But if I’m being objective, the film is quite charming.
The Oompa-Loompas are spot on, the squirrels were great, and the production design was absolutely stunning 🙂 Charlie Bucket and his grandfather were excellent too. Honestly, almost every character besides Depp himself worked perfectly... He was fine, but I would have played it differently... I mean, Wonka IS a mad scientist (they got that part right), just not "deranged." More like sympathetically eccentric, with a slightly warped view of reality.
I did miss some of those brilliant details from the book—things you probably can't fit into a movie, like square candies being round, flavored wallpaper, or sweets that stick to your teeth 🙂 All of that made Wonka feel more like an eccentric, kind-hearted, and incredibly imaginative soul to me...
I'm thinking Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 😍 plus those witches from Roald Dahl. Then there's the Purple Planet, Copper Pete, Professor Leopold's wild inventions, and the Swamp Ghost 😍 followed by Cipollino and that cake in the sky... also the train in the snow and Mice and Cats Upside Down (the one with the centipede, the shoes, and the Oklahoma Kid) and Dr. Jojboli... man, that's a lot 🙂
