The danger of being "too good" for your role

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the concept of being overqualified. We always talk about it in terms of job hunting—how hard it is to get hired when your resume looks "too impressive" for the position—but I think there's a deeper psychological side to it that we don't discuss enough.
When someone enters a system or an organization and immediately starts outperforming every metric, it creates this weird tension. On one hand, you want the best talent, but on the other, if someone is significantly more capable than the structure they are working within, it can actually disrupt the balance of the whole group. I saw this happen at my last job. We had a brilliant person join our department, and instead of making us all better, it created this subtle resentment and a sense of instability because the "rules" of how we functioned didn't quite fit their level of skill.
It makes me wonder if there's a ceiling to how much "extra" value a person can provide before they actually start causing friction in a settled environment. Is there such a thing as being too much of an asset?
Do you think being "better than expected" is always a net positive, or can it actually be a liability for the people around you?
