A dead heat.

If we’re being honest—which we should be—the real danger to society at large is the overproduction of xxx films. They feed young people, especially teenagers, completely unrealistic, warped, and above all, deviant depictions of sex.

Don't believe me?

Just think back to that recent documentary about:

My main gripe with the first one—aside from any obvious plot holes—is that the killer's psychological profile felt a bit thin. Still, the movie holds its own until the end thanks to that relentlessly creepy atmosphere the whole time; credit to a young James Wan for that! image It would be nice if they at least tried to iron out those kinks in the sequel.

(For the few fans who know the trivia: this lo-fi flick was shot in just 18 days with zero rehearsals, all while editing on the fly. On a budget of $1,200,000, it pulled in a massive $72,000,000. Since it didn't rely on some ridiculous hype machine like >, it’s easily one of the standout hits of the past year.)

Then again, since the sequel is being handled by a different director with an almost entirely new cast, that kind of improvement seems unlikely...

Either way, Saw II is already on my must-watch list for next year, so... we'll see!

Word on the street is that Tim Burton has actually outdone himself with this one.

Apparently, he’s been training 96 squirrels since they were born just for a single scene where they sit around a table cracking hazelnuts and tossing the shells over their shoulders.

Impressive, I suppose.

P.S. The trailer—specifically the production design—looks lavish, but even so, the overall vibe feels a bit hollow. I really hope all this isn't everything the movie has to offer... image

redowl90 said:You can't exactly watch Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings through the lens of "let's make a movie about oil drillers heading out to puncture a meteor to save humanity." They're just different beasts entirely.

You're talking nonsense. What kind of "drilling holes" is Titanic even preaching? Best value. Best movie of all time? Hard question.

Oops! image )

These movies feel more like treats for die-hard book fans and cinephiles than anything meant for a mainstream audience—though even that distinction is a bit debatable.

So, $1,129,219,252. That’s what Lord of the Rings: Return of the King pulled in at the global box office. It wasn't exactly a windfall from the casual public; it was more like a dedicated collection from die-hard book fans and cinephiles who—given how many times they likely rewatched it—probably felt obligated to show up.

P.S. Seriously, just drop it already. For your own sake.

We've got what it takes. We can make this happen.

U Why? Is there an issue?

P.S. For obvious reasons, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and LOTR were left out of the poll.

What exactly constitutes a "reasonable" reason? It’s like holding a poll for Miss America and then deciding, "Alright, we're only discussing the contestants who..." Not at all. "They made the top five!" Hilarious.

kowalski said:The "unfortunate" doctor actually turns out to be a fanatic by the end... a villain.

What does her ability to enjoy sex have, exactly, anything to do with it?

(By the way, she didn't "turn into a villain," but that's a completely different conversation...)

... and if you step away from the standard feminist trope about how women are humiliated in films like this...

In "films like this," subjectively speaking, one woman is being humiliated; women (plural) are humiliated in other, hyper-produced trash usually rated X...

... and if you look closer at how that scene is directed, you'll see Verhoeven actually showed how much she enjoyed it, maybe even more than him.

You know, I’d argue that Lyman (quite effectively) showed how much that forgettable businessman-criminal enjoyed being whipped; however, that still doesn't mean I find a scene like that sexy or provocative.

... preferences vary...

That's exactly my point!

... the emphasis here is on the rawness and brutality of the encounter, the contrast between male and female dynamics, which when merged, create a wide range of intensity.

Not quite. The focus here is on the idiotic, infantile depiction (of almost every) man's idea of "what a woman (obviously, every woman) actually needs." Which is... well, pathetic. Pretty much.

it didn't really seem to me like the doctor was experiencing his work phlegmatically.

Acting, kiddo. Ever heard of it? image

He could have "gone at" a slab of liver with that same "raw, primal" energy—honestly, I doubt there’d be much of a difference. For the (unfortunate) doctor, of course...
Forget > and get ready for >. It might just be the most brutal horror film of the decade...

(And I’m not even counting those razor-sharp Asian horror flicks here!)

The plot (as is often the case with these things) is based on true eventsimage and follows three young hitchhikers traveling through the remote backwoods of the US. They unexpectedly wander near a crater known as >—which gives the movie its name. A local drifter steps in to "save" them, though as it turns out...

It's set to premiere on November 18th.

For those out of the loop, this is that movie where the protagonist's wife cheats on him with his best friend. It hurts, obviously... Or, to quote Bo Burnham:

"... why did you ____ my wife while I was deployed?!!"

Anyway, I agree—the physics are nonexistent... image

Like that one where you can kill someone just by hitting them hard enough to drive their nasal bone into their brain...

Or the one where you survive driving a car into a pool while simultaneously getting shot several times...

Or the one where having a mangled hand doesn't affect your ability to throw a football hundreds of yards...

Or the one where shooting a trunk full of plastic explosives is somehow a bad idea...

Etc., etc., etc...

Rob Marshall took on Arthur Golden’s novel—a massive bestseller that was once famously Steven Spielberg’s "dream project." Aside from a genuinely solid story, the film features an Asian A-list cast that has since become truly iconic: Ziyi Zhang, Ken Watanabe, Gong Li, Michelle Yeoh...

The world premiere is set for December 9th.

A little trivia: Watanabe claims the entire crew was in tears during the final scenes. He says everyone went through about two boxes of tissues each...

I assume it goes without saying, but just to clear up any confusion regarding earnings, I was referring to the Worldwide Box Office.

slyrider16 said:That $200 million figure for War of the Worlds (someone’s definitely buying a Rolls-Royce after that one, haha) is just media hype...

Fair enough. 🙄 (Eye roll. Instead of a goat, you know...) Let's call it 100. And you know what?

I still maintain my stance: War of the Worlds will easily be the most profitable film of 2005!

casualotter21 said:Let's be real: this is already the third thread about War of the Worlds in just three months.

Actually, that’s just not true.

Yeah.

The topic isn't about the movie itself—I’m making a distinction here—it’s about the film as a... Mine. Just my two cents! Blockbuster Wars For the current year, 2005.

No, let's take this step by step...

He’s definitely the frontrunner. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith Based on the data from the $115,000,000 investment, what kind of return can we expect? The NumbersFine, let's say it hits $200,000,000. I'll take those odds. Certainly. Pocketing $500 million to a billion dollars. Not exactly a massive shake-up for the professional bettors and analysts out there, so...

Then they arrive. Batman Begins. At $135,000,000, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire I'm here. Ready when you are. Kingdom of Heaven Starting with a rather ambitious $130,000,000 and, ultimately, King Kong A "modest" $110,000,000.

They’ll all do it, without a doubt. justify Budgeting? Making a return of one to five times your initial investment isn't even up for debate. It's just basic math.

What is what, and what actually is. Initial. The point of this thread is whether one of them actually pulls it off—and if I may be so bold as to offer my own take, I’m betting on... War of the WorldsManaged to replicate exactly what happened with that film. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King?

P.S. Titanic. Well, as you can see, I left out...

It’s not because I think that $1,835,300,000 figure matters—it's about what this actually pulled in compared to that $200,000,000 investment. A little. Not because I actually care, but because I'm wearing a brand-new, crisp white shirt—as white as snow—and I have a feeling tomato stains aren't exactly easy to scrub out.

P.P.S. Put them back in your pockets... (The tomatoes, I mean!) 😍 )

Oh, mother. Earth.Isn't she beautiful? Take a look at this red one from the other side. I don't follow. Can you tell she’s watching with envy? What? Is she actually going to take that... ahem... point from us?

Humanity just keeps on with its daily grind. Life. It’s happening again, just like it always does in New York City, London, and even Washington, D.C. 😍

Well, here we go.

Americans are stepping out of their houses, looking bewildered. What on earth just appeared? skyOh, no. It's Martians! Run!

Too late...

Well then.

Nothing (yet) ☕ Neither the Martian nor Tomice-meter-and-strawberry-with-all-Katie-Holmes-pride-Cruise, but definitely the first one. Trailer. He showed up...

The budget is $200,000,000. Sandra King86, if we consider Steven Spielberg's appetite for spending as seen in The Terminal—which, let’s be honest, wasn't exactly his finest hour... Not even close. It performed exactly as anticipated at the worldwide box office.

So, (potentially) Blockbuster Wars. I'm here.

If you find yourself attracted to two men at once, is it more honorable to die than to live with such "filth"?

🙄

Why do you think a truly unique, one-of-a-kind woman from the East ultimately had to die when faced with such an agonizing choice?

northernfalcon30,

Ego tibi de alliis loquor, tu respondes de caepis.

If anyone disagrees, I’d love to hear an argument for its value beyond just the visuals.

There is one—oh, the irony! 🙄—old Chinese proverb that goes:

"If you strike a jar with your head and hear a hollow ring, it doesn't mean the jar is empty."

First off.

Second...

The "value beyond the visuals" lies in the fact that the protagonist, Mia, faces a choice between two men. Despite the conventional morality suggesting we can't be drawn to one person while holding firm feelings for another—loving one and knowing she will face regret regardless of her choice—she chooses...

[cue the fanfare]

... her own death.

As the ONLY acceptable, and therefore c-o-r-r-e-c-t option.

Any woman who has faced a dilemma like this, even once, will understand what I mean.

Those who haven't, won't.

But most importantly, "he who thinks all fruit ripens at the same time as strawberries knows nothing about grapes!"

Besides, didn't even Zhang Yimou once remark:

"Love cannot be explained. If you can explain it...

... then it isn't love."

steelharbor12 said:She’s talking about the thing between Achilles and that other girl... (whatever her name was). Did that actually happen?

"Actually happened" WHERE?

At Disneyland? 😁

The Iliad—which kicks off with Achilles' rage because Agamemnon snatches his prize, Briseis—is believed to have been composed in the 8th Century BCE, while the Trojan War itself is thought to have occurred around the 13th or 12th century BCE... presumably.

So, there we have it. How did an incredibly serious discourse regarding Troy devolve in just a few hours into silentpilot6's ranting about "victims" at some party (and his blatant enthusiasm for ménage à trois! 😲 ), Kika's obsession with a main female character's sexual orientation, and Richard Hernandez13's nostalgia for Santa Claus? One has to wonder what kind of "intergalactic version" of the Trojan War the ancient Greeks packed into their stories before she finally reached the unfortunate Homer four or five centuries later! 🙄

On the other hand, some archaeologists who excavated the site believed to be Troy found not a single shred of concrete evidence that the events described by Homer actually took place.

Therefore...

#1: As I said before: relax, people, and just enjoy Peterson's film. (Actually, just enjoy any movie; just stop acting like you're experts on things you know nothing about, like Mary in a bad soap opera! 🙂 )

#2: silentpilot6, when exactly did that remark happen? By the way, that forum user—aka the witch—just implicitly called you an old man if you pay attention. If I were you, I'd send the goat a sprig of ivy... 🙂

...with a note saying she's "gone" ASAP!
