Living on a fault line is nerve-wracking in The World Around Us ·
I saw some footage earlier of some major ground movement overseas and it honestly just made me stare at my ceiling for ten minutes. Does anyone else get that weird, low-key anxiety whenever you hear about tectonic shifts happening somewhere in the world?

How to reduce PDF file size? in Software ·
I’ve got a PDF containing roughly 200 scanned pages that’s sitting at about 50 MB. Is there any way to compress this further while maintaining the PDF format?

Now I've been agonizing over the decision for quite some time. Should I go with glasses or contact lenses? What are the pros and cons of each? Also, does anyone know if it's possible to get colored contacts? Finally, what kind of prices are we looking at, and where can I actually pick these things up? Thanks! 🙂

I have a -1 prescription. I wear contacts, and honestly, they don't bother me at all, whether I'm wearing them from sunrise to sunset or dealing with smoke and dust. I've even slept in them when I didn't have the chance to take them out. I don't deal with dry eye issues, wind doesn't irritate them, and I can throw sunglasses right over them without any hassle; for the most part, I'm extremely satisfied. In the beginning, I had to turn on every light in the house and use three different mirrors just to get them in, but I've practiced enough now that I can pop both in within thirty seconds even in the dark. 😁

Oh, and it’s never once happened that I had to take them out while I was out and about because they became uncomfortable. I just put them in and forget they're even there.

Anyway, try checking here: http://www.mayoclinic.org/

That's who I see. He's a real pro. I remember him looking into my eye once and telling me, "I can tell from here if you've got diabetes, a brain tumor, or [he listed several other ailments I can't recall], but basically, son, you're healthy as a horse!" 😎 🙏

Just be careful with that voltage; as you bump up the frequency, heat dissipation increases roughly linearly, but when you push the voltage, that dissipation rises quadratically! 😲 Someone once reminded me of this, and after running through the equations from my freshman year of college, the logic holds up perfectly. 😁

Captain, the power is rising exponentially! 🙂 😁

Honestly, I was sitting there watching 24 and couldn't help but think that they really should have cast Kiefer as the lead in Dark City instead. Imagine him with a ticking clock counting down the seconds while he scrambles to save the city and the woman; he’d just be running around with his cell phone, taking out strangers with surgical precision using pistols and sniper rifles. 🙏 😁

I still have this vivid memory of heading out to catch The Matrix in theaters... during the drive, I remember hearing Chemicals' "Hey Girl, hey boy" playing on the radio for the first time, and once we pulled up to the cinema and saw the massive crowd gathered outside, a friend joked, "Someone get me a Redeemer!"😁 (It was back in '99; we were just teenagers, completely caught up in the hype of the Unreal Tournament film! 🙂 🙏 🤣 )

I distinctly recall sitting there thinking that the visual effects in that movie were on an entirely different level compared to anything I had ever seen before. When Neo finally takes down Smith and then that bizarre leg movement happens right after he "clears" things, I honestly assumed the whole sequence was just computer-generated. 😁 However, given that they were navigating a digital realm, I was actually expecting more drastic shifts in the city's topology—something akin to what happens in Dark City, but perhaps overlaid with more green code scrolling by as the environment warped. It just didn't go that way... 😢 😁

Gregory Brooks6 said:According to the poll, Dark City comes out on top. It’s interesting to note that even though both films were released back in '98 and '99, The Matrix only pulled in $171,383,253 in the USA, while Dark City managed $14,337,579.
Equilibrium performed even worse: $1,203,974 (USA)

I don't give a damn about those ridiculous box office numbers! 👎
Equi might actually be better than The Matrix for me—it's certainly more serious—but if we're judging strictly by revenue, you're telling me it would be 150x inferior? Give me a break... 🙂

The first Matrix remains an absolute original. Equilibrium was surprisingly good, and Dark City? That one has some serious depth! 👍

Download AtiTool and set it up to monitor and log your GPU temperature to a file; that way, you can actually see if the heat is spiking and causing those system restarts.

I think I’ve officially hit the ceiling with my current rig.
To verify stability, I spent the entire night running Prime95 torture tests without a single error, and I used AtiTool to hunt for artifacts on the GPU (I noticed some tiny yellow dots popping up). These are the absolute highest frequencies I can maintain without any errors occurring during roughly ten hours of testing.

Barton 2500+ @ 2014 MHz

ASUS N6800XT 300/700 8*1/4vp @ 410/830 16*1/6vp

Improvements over stock settings:

6200 -> 9700 3Dmark03 score 😎
???? -> 4054 3Dmark05 score

The CPU peaks at about 69 degrees Celsius, while the GPU hits 70 degrees when the fan is set to "medium." I’ve configured the fan to kick into "fast" mode only once it hits 71, which effectively keeps the temps from creeping past 70; this prevents the fan from running at full blast constantly, keeping the noise down and power consumption lower.

It’s actually pretty impressive to see just how much headroom certain components have hidden inside them. 🙂

Enough rambling, though. Back to Oblivion, since that's the whole reason I'm even bothering with all this. 😁

P.s. The only thing I haven't figured out is whether those errors are being triggered by an overclocked frequency or if the temperature is simply too high... for instance, is a 420MHz core clock too aggressive for stable operation, or is 71C pushing it too far? Honestly, I don't have the energy to mess with it anymore today; at this rate, I won't even get around to playing anything anyway. 😁

So, here’s what I’m actually asking you all: should I leave my GPU and CPU overclocked constantly, or just toggle them on when I'm running a demanding game? Personally, the latter seems like the more logical approach to me, but I'm interested in hearing how the rest of you handle it...

wanderingbadger16 said:Your CPU temperature seems a bit high to me🙂. Either your heatsink is subpar or the thermal paste has dried out. Pick up some higher-quality compound and apply a very, very thin layer between the processor and the cooler.

The moment I open the case, it drops to 69 under max load and overclocking🙂
For the past year, this rig has been running practically 24/7 at full tilt running BOINC, with the case closed at 68C, and everything remained perfectly stable.

My cooler is some Spire model; it runs at 2700rpm, it's quite large, and it cost about $33.

Honestly, I don't have the energy to mess around with it anymore. In a few months, I'll have more cash on hand than I do now, and I plan to rebuild the whole system. I won't need to pinch pennies on secondary components like coolers; instead, I'll be picking up something truly high-end. 👍

No123 said:I let mine run for 40 hours straight and didn't run into a single hiccup.😉

I bumped the FSB up to 182 MHz to hit that sweet spot of a round 2 GHz. I've had Prime95 running for about 20 minutes now and everything seems stable—though according to the readme, any potential errors usually pop up within those first few minutes. My CPU temperature has settled at 74C (up from a max of 68C when I'm not overclocking). Is that range acceptable? I suppose if I popped the case open, the temps would drop by maybe 3 or 4 degrees, but then I'd have to deal with the extra fan noise...

No123 said:Just run Prime95 for about 24 hours; if it finishes without crashing, you're golden.😉

Hmm, is it actually wise to just leave that running and head to bed? I’d hate for something to fry while I’m asleep.😁

Oh, one more thing... my plan is to only trigger the overclocking for the GPU and CPU when I'm actually gaming—why run them at max speed when there's no reason to? Does that logic hold up?
Overclocking (Main Thread) in Desktops ·
wanderingbadger16 said:That’s fine.👍 As long as Windows stays stable, you're on the right track; however, I would suggest running a few more benchmarks to really stress the system out just to be certain you won't run into a crash later.

If I take it incredibly slow, making incremental adjustments and proceeding with extreme caution, am I effectively eliminating the risk of burning anything out? I have this lingering gut feeling that overclocking is inherently risky, yet at the same time, I find myself thinking there shouldn't be much danger if I'm constantly monitoring temperatures and following the proper procedures...

wanderingbadger16 said:If you want, I can email you the benchmark I put together using various memory timings and FSB configurations so you can draw your own conclusions. <- 1:1 is the optimal setting
SPD sets your memory to its rated speed.
The answer is YES.

Feel free to just paste it here instead... My reason for being so verbose regarding my own overclocking experiences is the hope that someone else reading this might find it useful. 😉 But honestly, your word alone is enough for me—if you say 1:1 is best, then 1:1 it is!

So, what should I do? Lock it at 1:1 and then push the FSB as far as it will go? I ran a Sandra Burn-In test, and at FSB 185 MHz, it cleared every single test without a hitch (though once I pushed the FSB to 190 MHz, I hit a blue screen immediately). At 185 MHz, my CPU will sit at 2035 MHz while the memory hits 370... what’s your take on those numbers?
Overclocking (Main Thread) in Desktops ·
wanderingbadger16 said:Correct, the SPD will set your memory to 400MHz—your BIOS will show "By SPD," meaning the RAM is running at its rated speed of 400MHz. If you were using 433MHz RAM, the SPD would target that frequency instead. However, that's a separate issue from manually setting your memory ratio to 100% of the FSB; if you do that, your memory will always run at a 1:1 ratio with the FSB.

That is fine, but you still haven't answered my question regarding:
Hmm, so you're claiming it performs better with an FSB of 166 and memory at 333 (100%), rather than an FSB of 166 and memory at 400 (by SPD)?
