Looking good and feeling healthy in Health ·
vividseal16 said:Tips for living a beautiful and healthy life

* Get a regular 7-8 hours of sleep
-I usually get about 6 hours during the week, though I try to catch up a bit on the weekends...

* Be physically active for at least 30 minutes every day
-I definitely manage to hit that 30-minute mark, if not more...

* Eat breakfast regularly
-Yes, I make sure to eat it...

* Drink about 8 glasses of water daily
-I'm honestly not sure, probably not quite that much, though I do stay hydrated enough...

* Divide your daily food intake into five meals
-Usually just 3 or 4 meals for me...

* Avoid snacking, fatty foods, salty snacks, and sweets
-Not really, I find myself reaching for cookies fairly often, and I'll admit to having my fair share of chips and popcorn too...

* Eat fruits and vegetables every single day
-Vegetables are part of my routine, but fruit isn't something I eat every single day...

* Maintain a healthy body weight
-Actually, I struggle with being a bit underweight...

* Avoid stressful situations and learn how to manage stress
-If only you could just provide a magic formula to make that happen...

* Don't smoke cigarettes
-I smoke a Marlboro...

* Consume alcohol in moderation or avoid it altogether
-I have a drink every day, at least a beer; I find I just can't go without it...
Well, velvetwolf92, I can't help but wonder if the real issue here is that you aren't eating more frequently throughout the day, which leaves you feeling so ravenous that you end up overindulging during those three main meals.
It’s actually something I struggle with myself whenever I miss a snack between my bigger meals; by the time I finally get home, I find myself eating so much that I can barely breathe, which really isn't ideal, so I try my best to have something small to tide me over...
Eating more often certainly won't cause you to gain weight—if anything, you'll probably feel much better and avoid that heavy, overstuffed sensation entirely.
In my opinion, it really is as simple as that 😉
Dealing with aura migraines in Health ·
I’ve been dealing with this since my teenage years...
I always lived with this underlying fear of losing my sight entirely, because honestly, it’s terrifying when everything just goes dark for about twenty minutes, followed by a headache that feels absolutely brutal.
Back in high school, I went to see an eye doctor who told me it was a classic case of migraine, advising me that whenever it happens, I should just lock myself away in a dark room and lie down; but most of the time I'm out and about, making it impossible, so I just have to endure it and wait for my vision to return...
I never actually sought out any specialized testing or anything, so this is really the first time I’ve heard that there’s a specific name for this or that anyone else experiences something similar. It’s actually a bit of a relief to know...
electricdriver78, are you on any oral contraceptives?
For me, those episodes used to happen almost several times a week while I was taking them, but ever since I stopped, it’s become very, very rare—it mostly seems to trigger when I’m out at the beach in the sun, or if I spend too much time staring at my computer screen without giving my eyes a break...
Hang in there, girl! 😉
Unquenchable thirst in Health ·
Maybe all those cups of coffee have you feeling a bit parched, brisknomad6?
As for me, all this caffeine just leaves me with this restless, unquenchable thirst...
Stomach issues / GI trouble in Health ·
No, it’s actually the acid that triggers the gastritis in the first place!

If you're dealing with that kind of pain, it sounds like a classic case of gastritis to me.
Now, there are two ways this usually plays out. It could be caused by an overproduction of stomach acid—which often happens when you're dealing with high stress levels, constant nerves, drinking too much coffee on an empty stomach, or smoking way too many cigarettes... or, it could be caused by that specific bacteria Linda Peterson mentioned earlier, H. pylori. You can get tested for that through a simple blood test or even a breath test. If it turns out you have the bacteria, honestly, that's almost a relief because you can just take a round of antibiotics and clear it out. But if it’s just standard, chronic gastritis without the bacteria involved... well, that's a much tougher road because you can never truly get rid of it for good.
My best advice would be to go get tested for the bacteria first, just to be sure...

GOOD LUCK!
Bad posture: How to fix it? in Health ·
nimbleangler34 said:My posture is just a disaster; I feel as stiff as a board... And honestly, spending most of my day hunched over a desk at work isn't doing me any favors. Throw in a heavy laptop bag and all the other daily stresses, and it's a recipe for trouble. Every time I remember, I try to sit up straight, but after about thirty seconds, I find myself slouching right back down... It feels like my shoulders have become so weak that they just can't hold me upright anymore. I try stretching here and there, but clearly, it’s not cutting it. Does anyone have suggestions for some effective exercises or something similar? 😢

Try to get some movement in every single morning, and remember: discipline, discipline, discipline...
Though, if you feel like the issue is pretty significant, you might consider joining a local gym where a personal trainer could walk you through specific movements designed to strengthen those core muscles that actually support your frame...
I personally saw a real difference in my own posture after about a month of hitting the gym, but I won't lie, it took a massive amount of self-discipline to stay on track...
Good luck! 😉
swiftscout8 said:Oh, absolutely. I’m basically a Japanese person at this point. My entire existence revolves around a strict schedule: I eat at the exact same time every single day, my bathroom breaks are predictable, and my sleep patterns, wake-up calls, even which Netflix series I binge or when I hit the gym... it’s all timed out. Looking back at it now, it feels like I’ve been living on autopilot, almost like I was programmed... 🙄 😢

My life is a complete mess! 😢 😁

Come on, don't be so hard on yourself! 😉
It isn't really that bad; honestly, having some structure is much better than being completely disorganized!
😉 😉 😉 😉
rowdyridge59 said:I’m certainly no sleep specialist—I'm just a biology major—but based on what I've gathered from my studies, six hours can be plenty if you feel like it is. If you aren't dealing with exhaustion, a lack of focus, or those annoying micro-sleeps during the day, then it's perfectly fine. Some people thrive on six hours while others need eleven...
Personally, I fall into that second camp where eleven is the magic number. 😁

There was some theory floating around about how the brain essentially repairs its own internal wiring while we sleep... and if that's the case, I clearly have some serious maintenance work to do... 😁

THANKS for the golden insights, rowdyridge59! 😉
Honestly, the worst part is that during the work week, I'm usually getting only about six hours because of my schedule, but then I'll try to catch up on the weekends by sleeping eight or nine hours, and I end up feeling absolutely terrible...
I have this nagging feeling that even eight hours wouldn't be enough for me during the week, even if that's supposed to be the "ideal" amount...
I suspect my real issue is just staying up far too late at night...

And as for what those two American psychologists were claiming... 👍 😂
they're complete fools!
I’m right there with swiftscout8 on this one!
I can drift off in about five minutes flat, almost as if someone just flips a switch and shuts me down...
I really try to aim for that six to eight-hour window, but I struggle to hit it because my schedule keeps me up so incredibly late. As a result, I wake up feeling completely exhausted and just on edge every single morning.

I’m actually curious to hear some PROFESSIONAL insight here—is six hours of sleep truly enough for a person to function at their best??
Or is that just not cutting it??
🙏
Private clinics for gastroscopy? in Health ·
Just wanted to share this for anyone interested:
I gave a local clinic a call today to ask about their pricing for a gastroscopy, and honestly, the cost is just eye-watering 😂 $370!

Melissa Cruz2 said:Anyway, urbanseal6, a gastroscopy actually lets them see everything clearly, so it’s really not such a bad thing to get done. I tend to go the masochistic route because I figure a little discomfort is worth it, especially at my age... you can't be too careful when it comes to regular checkups like this.😁

I know what you mean, Melissa Cruz2, even my doctor told me the exact same thing. 😉
It’s true, it’s easily the most uncomfortable procedure out there—compared to just getting blood work or an ultrasound—but it’s also by far the most effective.
I spent a long time hesitating and overthinking it, but I finally decided to just bite the bullet and GO, because at least that way I’ll have some actual answers and hopefully put an end to this constant daily pain.
It isn't being a masochist 😉 , it’s just taking care of yourself instead of putting off the important stuff! 👋

Michael Fox46 said:urbanseal6, you don't necessarily have to go through with the gastroscopy; I’ve had two done myself, and I was lucky enough to end up with a really decent doctor both times. You could always just head to a local lab to get a blood test to check for the presence of bacteria instead. I actually went recently, and thankfully, they didn't make me swallow the tube again. It’s true that a gastroscopy gives the clearest picture of what's happening in your stomach, but honestly, it all depends on which specialist you happen to get...

I hear you, Michael Fox46, but I already did one of those breath tests for Helicobacter and the results came back negative...
It’s such a shame, because if I actually had the bacteria, they’d just give me some antibiotics and the whole thing would be settled...
My doctor was quite insistent that I need to schedule the gastroscopy and a biopsy... 😢 😢 precisely because the bacteria isn't there!
Part of me almost wishes I just had the bacteria...

Melissa Cruz2 said:If anything like that ever happened to me, I’d be writing letters left and right—to him, the hospital director, the Secretary of Health, even the local newspapers...

And honestly, Melissa Cruz2, I would probably take the exact same approach, though I can't help but wonder if it would actually make any difference in the end...
I suspect that, sadly, it wouldn't... 😢

quiettrucker8 said:I actually visited a private specialist clinic near Times Square, though I can't quite recall the specific name of the practice anymore. What I do remember, however, is how incredibly smooth everything went, both during and after the actual procedure. The doctor was truly wonderful; he took a moment just to chat with me first, likely to help ease any nerves, and then, with his nurse assisting, they began the process while I watched my stomach on a high-def color monitor... it was actually quite fascinating to watch. Honestly, the whole experience was completely seamless and stress-free! My only real complaint was that the final bill wasn't exactly easy on the wallet...

How's it going?

I think I actually told him that I hoped someone would go out and throw a full game of blackjack while he was stuck undergoing his colonoscopy...

😂 😂 😂

👍 better yet, poker! 😁

But honestly, you can't even fight back against that kind of behavior, which is the absolute worst part... if you had tried to file a formal complaint with the department head, the hospital board, or heaven knows who else, they probably would have just turned it around on you and made it seem like YOU were being petty...🙄

allegra said:Are you absolutely certain that it was actually a personal cell phone...

In most hospitals across America, there’s a standard protocol where on-call physicians are issued official mobile phones to carry during their shifts... so, if a doctor happens to be on duty that day, it’s entirely possible that the dedicated pager or work phone would start ringing... they might be getting called in for an emergency endoscopy in another department, or perhaps they've been summoned to the ICU...

I suppose that's one way to look at it... 🙄
I honestly had no idea about that...
I had a feeling this was what was happening, especially seeing how visibly frustrated Jose Miller3 seemed to be about the whole situation... I mean, a woman isn't going to get that upset just because a doctor mentioned an emergency; it was perfectly obvious that they were having a private conversation...
I have to say, I’ve actually been in that exact same position myself... there I was, sitting in the dentist's chair with my mouth stretched wide open, stuffed full of cotton, and that little suction tube was shoved right under my tongue, which was about as comfortable as you can imagine. Then, out of nowhere, my dentist's phone starts ringing. He spent what felt like five whole minutes chatting away with someone, smiling and laughing while he tried to nail down some weekend plans, all while I just sat there completely helpless... 🙄 !
It wasn't even my intention to suggest that I couldn't manage having official work phones, but honestly, this situation has gone completely overboard...😠

Jose Miller3 said:Private, private... everything is just private...

He was sitting there negotiating with his wife about whether they should grab dinner before or after the movie, and even trying to decide which one of them would handle the parent-teacher conference the next day!

@ urbanseal6, who would you even report him to? I went straight to the department head, but he just brushed me off, saying he has total confidence in his colleague's professionalism...🙂

Good grief, what an absolute jerk!
And the guy who refuses to doubt his expertise? He's even worse!
Honestly, if I were in your shoes, I’d have gone to the department manager too, or maybe I would have just given him a piece of my mind regarding how poorly he conducts himself... it's just awful, Jose Miller3, I feel so bad for you...😢

Jose Miller3 said:My endoscopy experience wasn't actually all that unpleasant—people say it varies quite a bit from person to person—but I nearly lost my temper with the doctor. While the scope was literally inside my stomach, his phone starts ringing, and instead of ignoring it, he actually picks up to chat while leaving me just sitting there waiting... I mean, seriously? It’s like if you were examining someone's knee, you wouldn't be expected to take a call right then, let alone during a procedure like this!!! 😠

😲 😲 😲
Good grief, oh my goodness...
I would honestly consider filing a lawsuit over that!
It’s funny how every single medical facility in the country is plastered with signs saying:
PLEASE TURN OFF ALL CELL PHONES!
It seems strange that those rules only apply to the patients, while doctors apparently get special treatment... 🙂

Justin Perez2 said:I’m not quite sure which city you’re asking about, but I actually went to see Dr. Venus Williams over in Cleveland... my primary care physician just couldn't figure out what was wrong with me, and he spent an entire month putting me through the wringer with nonsense instead of just giving me a referral to a specialist.

So, my experience with a private clinic was something like this:
It’s relatively quick—I had my initial exam, an ultrasound, and then the endoscopy all on the very same day. The nurse was wonderful; she gave me a brief rundown of what to expect and helped calm my nerves a bit. They gave me some kind of injection that left me feeling dizzy for about an hour afterward. It wasn't exactly pleasant; I felt incredibly nauseous the whole time and kept thinking to myself, "Gosh, I hope this is over soon, because I feel like I'm going to pass out!" About half an hour later, the results were ready, along with the diagnosis, prescriptions, and dietary recommendations...
My throat didn't even hurt afterward, even though they warned me it might...

Now, as for getting treatment through public insurance, I can't say for certain what that's like, but it honestly gets on my nerves sometimes how they schedule everything a month out or even later (while you're sitting there in pain, but who cares, right?) and the staff isn't exactly warm; they tend to be quite indifferent, whereas a kind word really means a lot to me...
To be specific, a colleague told me her sister had the same procedure done at that same private clinic versus at a public hospital, and now she refuses to ever go back to the hospital again. Apparently, the tube they use there is thicker, and their bedside manner is much coarser...
Anyway, that's about it, and I hope I was able to help a little (or at least not make things worse 😁 )...

Justin, thank you so much for such a thoughtful reply, but unfortunately, I'm currently in Washington, D.C.
I actually heard that story about the thicker tubes used in hospitals recently too, which is exactly why I started this thread...
I'll have to spend some time searching for a private provider, though I've already tried Googling without much luck...
I imagine what you went through was quite intense, but I suppose it's better to endure a bit of discomfort once than to live through the misery every single day...
I did take a Helicobacter breath test, but it came back negative, so I don't see any way around getting an endoscopy. Honestly, it's better to just get it over with than to deal with this crap every day...
Also, what kind of recommendations did they give you after the exam? Are the dietary restrictions major, and are you feeling any better now?...
😉
