When parking is a complete free-for-all or just non-existent, it messes with everything—local businesses struggle because customers can't find a place to stop, traffic gets backed up by people idling while they search, and it just creates this general sense of friction in the community... It feels like if the municipality took a more organized approach, maybe even investing in some structured lots or better-managed zones, the whole rhythm of the city would just feel less chaotic... but I suppose that requires actual planning, which is a big ask these days... 🤷
At the end of the day, that kind of thing really falls on the vehicle owner... it’s their responsibility, not something the city should be stepping in to handle...

Sure, it’s technically a violation, but at the end of the day, that sidewalk belongs to them just as much as it does to anyone else's...

The best move would be for Code Enforcement to actually do their job for once and just install some bollards so people can walk on the sidewalk without having to dodge everything...

In the United Kingdom, the lines get pretty long, but they move fast—you're usually in and out in about 10 minutes, which isn't too bad because it's actually quite peaceful inside

True, and we also order some things online via Amazon, which does count toward the data, but honestly, even with Prime these days, you still have to deal with the wait times
Plus, you can't order the same volume online as you can when you just walk into the store... for example, once every six months we'll just load up the car and go grab enough toilet paper, pet food, and cat litter to last us half a year
Delivery services have limits on how many items you can grab, and you can always find better deals in person... like how Aldi often has salads marked down by 50% if they expire in a couple of days, so the pricing isn't exactly comparable either

Look, you were already told that they don't offer delivery service there...

To be honest, we actually tried it a couple of weeks ago to help out my girlfriend's dad, but in the end, he just goes to the store himself every two or three days now
He says it's his way of getting out of the house, though I suppose for most people, it's become more or less like that
You go and you just stand outside in line and chat

They have specific hours for seniors now, but he just isn't an early riser

So, when it comes to dealing with a short-term surge in deliveries, it doesn't make much sense to hire extra staff, even on a temporary basis
Because you need pickers, drivers, and vans... it's just too much overhead when you aren't sure how long the work will actually last

Actually, the best move is usually using those security firms that handle everything, at least in the United Kingdom

But getting back to the topic, most of Asda are back to staying open until 10, I think Walmart and Aldi are too; we actually popped into one of the supermarkets (it's called Warehouse) on the way home today for a quick run because there was nobody in line, and we ended up finishing with some Pepsi
The store had pretty much everything, honestly, I think they might even have too much toilet paper right now

Anyway, I know in Poland plenty of shops stay open until 11 PM, and in Washington, D.C., there's a major supermarket downtown that stays open until 2 AM.
I also remember hitting up 24-hour spots in smaller towns in Romania for snacks, drinks, whatever... If I recall right, Spain has quite a few of those too (in a small town I visited).

I've traveled through the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, and Turkey lately... but man, my brain is fried, I can't remember the exact setup in all of them.

By the way, are there actual laws against it?

I've got two massive spots right near me—Walmart and Target—just about a ten-minute drive away... though you also have plenty of those little corner stores scattered around that stay open all night, including one off-license type place that seems to run from 8 PM straight through to 9 AM the next morning
The big chains usually shut down for Christmas and Easter, but on Christmas, even the public transit in New York City basically grinds to a halt... I suppose things could be similar back home too

I'm with you there, let owners make their own calls regarding operating hours, and if people want strict oversight on how many hours employees clock, well, more power to anyone who actually enjoys working that much

I mean, looking back at my own time, I ended up working through holidays at the airport, and you always see crews pulling shifts on weekends and late nights at toll booths and stuff like that, too...

And yeah, it’s mostly minimum wage work, and honestly, grocery store jobs aren't exactly rocket science... you don't need a degree or specialized skills, and sometimes you don't even need a strong grasp of the language, which is why it stays in that low-skilled category...

Honestly, we could really use some 24-hour convenience stores here in the States too, just to make life a little easier...
