Gold for the Bold: An American Classic
(Kelly's Heroes, 1970)
PBS, 08.05.2008 (Tuesday), 8:05 PM

A war movie through and through. During World War II, Lieutenant Kelly (Clint Eastwood) captures a German officer and tries to squeeze some intel out of him. After a few drinks, he learns the guy is on a top-secret mission: transporting $16 million in gold bullion to a French military base. Naturally, Kelly decides he wants a piece of that action. He starts plotting with a few buddies to slip behind enemy lines and swipe the loot. His crew, led by the heavy-hitting Big Joe (Telly Savalas), has a tight three-day window to pull this off. With help from Crapgame (Don Rickles) and Oddball (Donald Sutherland), Kelly leads his squad deep into enemy territory using three Sherman tanks to hunt down that gold...

"Kelly's Heroes" is a seriously solid war flick. It’s got this clever way of telling a story that isn't really about the war itself, but more of an adventure that just happened to unfold for an American unit on the front lines. Between the sharp directing and an incredible cast of actors who totally nail their roles—each one representing a different type of person you'd find in a squad—it's two hours of great entertainment that still delivers plenty of tension. It’s also a biting, subtle satire on human greed, all wrapped up in a perfectly realized wartime atmosphere.

Runtime: 132 min.
Cast: Clint Eastwood and Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carroll O'Connor, Donald Sutherland, Gavin Mcleod
Screenplay: Troy Kennedy-Martin
Director: Brian G. Hutton

I can't wait to catch this one. I think I saw it on PBS a long time ago. Clint and Donald are absolute legends. 🙏

The guy from Austin Powers (playing Dr. Evil's son) and the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series?

Yap, exactly him. 🙂

Over the last few days, they've been dropping a handful of teasers to build hype for the upcoming Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated movie. You can check some of them out here, along with a special surprise video they put together. 😁

Yeah, it's an episode from that comedy show Robot Chicken, created by Seth Green.

By the way, I was watching Robot Chicken last night—it’s such a killer parody of Star Wars. It hits you with some seriously wild scenes, everything from the bits with Palpatine to the stuff involving Darth Vader and Jar Jar Binks, and even that bit where they bring George W. Bush into the Star Wars universe. 😁 Also, Episode II is slated for this fall. I'd definitely recommend checking it out.

Yeah, you're totally right: By the time we get to Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Anakin Skywalker has already climbed the ranks to become a full Jedi Knight and a legitimate war hero, still fighting right alongside Obi-Wan.

I bet we’re going to see the whole transition go down during the movie or the series—watching Anakin Skywalker finally earn his stripes as a Jedi Knight and take on an Apprentice.

Honestly, I haven't a clue either. We'll just have to wait and see how they handle it in the film; maybe they'll actually clear things up. It feels a little nonsensical to me too. 🤷

Exactly. There are only ever two Sith—the Master and his Apprentice. They used to have more people involved back in the day, but they realized all that fighting amongst themselves was getting messy, so they settled on the rule that only two can exist at once.

We can't really decide if it's better or worse until we actually sit down and watch it.

And just because you aren't a fan of the 3D doesn't automatically mean the movie itself is bad. That’s just a matter of personal taste, not a reflection of the actual quality.

This looks absolutely legendary. 😁 Honestly, the movie could probably go by an alternative title—The Boss: Return of the Minđa. 😁

cosmicowl732 said:How does this actually tie in with the Clone Wars cartoons on Cartoon Network? (I've seen them all, and honestly, they're top-tier stuff).

You can pretty much look at the Clone Wars film and the series dropping this fall as a remake and an expansion of that original Clone Wars show. Basically, it’s going to be Bigger and Better. 🙂

That’s exactly why Din Meyer ended up doing it—you know, the actress famous for playing the Romulan Lieutenant Commander Donatra in Star Trek : Nemesis.

The only real letdown with the third installment is that Jolene didn't show us the guy. 😁
Starship Troopers: Marauder in Movies ·
Just finished watching this movie and I have to say, it’s actually really solid. It isn’t some massive blockbuster spectacle, which is totally fair since it's a direct-to-video release, but it’s definitely worth your time if you're a fan.

Visually speaking, I’d say they hit the mark. It looks like they dumped a huge chunk of their modest budget straight into the effects. To be honest, the bugs look a little artificial—kind of reminding me of how they looked in the original film from 11 years ago. On the flip side, the space sequences and the way they laid out the propaganda messaging look genuinely great.

Jolene Blalock is her usual talented self, but Casper van Dien is really the MVP here; without him, the movie wouldn't even be half as engaging. As for the plot, it feels like it took some heavy inspiration from Babylon 5 and DS9, especially regarding the religious undertones and the whole undemocratic vibe of the government (you can easily draw a parallel to the undemocratic United Nations in Babylon 5). The first movie didn't lean nearly as hard into politics or religion, so this felt like a refreshing change of pace.

The character arc for Sky Marshall Anoke was handled pretty well, too. I was totally convinced he was one of the good guys for most of the film, just like Hauser was, so seeing his true colors at the end was a nice twist. One of the standout moments for me was when Lola (aka Jolene) commands the ship to go into warp—it immediately gave me T'Pol vibes. 😁

But honestly, the coolest part of the whole thing was finally getting a look at the combat units from the Marauder program. We didn't get to see them in the first two movies, even though they're a staple in the Heinlein book the story is based on. The only thing missing from the books was seeing those handheld nuclear weapons actually in action. For the actual Marauder scenes, it looks like they went with a mix of CGI and stop-motion animation.

From what I can gather, the story takes place right between Episode II and Episode III.
And apparently, Anakin Skywalker even has his own apprentice in this animated movie.

Yeah, exactly. The Clone Wars are happening right in that gap between those two movies, obviously. 🙂

Yep, introducing the Padawan Ahsoka Tano.

BTW, they just dropped two new posters too.

Mark your calendars, because Star Wars: The Clone Wars is hitting theaters on August 15th. This movie is basically the big kickoff for the animated Clone Wars series that’s set to premiere this fall. It’s being directed by Dave Filoni, and honestly, the voice cast is stacked—we’ve got legends like Samuel L. Jackson voicing Mace Windu, Christopher Lee as Count Dooku, Anthony Daniels playing C-3PO, and Matthew Wood as General Grievous. My only real gripe is that we won't hear Frank Oz voicing Yoda this time around; instead, they're using Tom Kane, who actually handled the Yoda role back in the original Clone Wars series.

You can check out the movie trailer right here. I'm here..

That Iscurio flick. Total garbage. 😁
Man, that goal three seconds before the whistle was brutal. It felt just like that USA-Turkey game. 😢
