Such an incredible movie!!! 👍 I thought the ending was particularly clever because it feels like it just keeps going... plus, Captain Jones works so well as a major antagonist. That one shot where he’s playing the organ is just stunning!!! 🙏 🙏
It actually reminds me quite a bit of those classic horror and monster flicks from the 1930s... 😎
Maybe redowl90 is onto something... I mean, Jerry is probably the greatest copy-paster in history... though honestly, most of his films could probably be used in mental institutions instead of performing lobotomies...🙂
The only ones with any actual substance are those Pirates movies...😉

The man can take absolute garbage and turn it into a massive blockbuster... he's proven that more times than I can count... Of course, when I say "blockbuster," I don't mean the movie is actually good or, heaven forbid, holds any artistic value. I’m strictly talking about the box office numbers... Basically, the guy has this knack for making people reach into their pockets and drop $17 on total junk... I guess that's an impressive skill in its own way...
He’s definitely a god-tier producer, no doubt about that! But at the same time, he might still be the biggest copy-paster in history... you can believe both things at once, I suppose...😎
Richard Hernandez13 said:The Monkey Island series was partially inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, and Monkey Island 2 features a number of tributes to it, particularly a scene with a guard dog in a prison being lured by a bone and Disneyland style underground tunnels and "e-tickets" in the closing scenes.
Sure, it draws from that Disney pirate aesthetic, but I don't think it's really a case of simple copy-pasting. Every part of the game feels pretty creative and original to me, I guess...
That piece about Ivan budalica is decent, I guess, but nothing out of the ordinary. It seems like he picked up an award mostly because he was featured in the weakest program on the day when the crowds were at their peak...🤔 The funniest part for me, though, is when Ivan stumbles upon that hole where the bear fell in, and the bear immediately knows his name...😂 It’s kind of bizarre that I find that so funny...😛
To be honest, the stop-motion films were the biggest disappointment for me 😕. About 20 or 25 years ago (back when I was born), "Vincent" 🙏 🙏 by Tim Burton was shown at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, and I still haven't seen anything quite as good as that...
I feel like Leviathan deserved its award completely 👍. On the other hand, the worst film in my opinion was "tango Nero," simply because there wasn't really any reason for it to be animated in the first place...👎
I actually attended the awards ceremony. I really liked the one that won the award for best debut film. Zlatko Grgić nesanica... it probably would have been absolutely perfect if that cat hadn't turned into a woman.👍
Everything about this animation is just wonderful...
With Mr. Wolf as the father figure, it’s easily the best story out there... 🙏 🙏
I didn't make it in on Tuesday, though... I guess that Jammaurin option sounds pretty good... An old crocodile became friends with an octopus. She kept feeding him fish until one night, the crocodile decided to eat one of his friend's tentacles. 👍
Taylor Gray3 said:I mean, "While Darwin sleeps" actually incorporates some animation elements, whereas "Dies Irae" feels more like pure experimental cinema. I guess their criteria might be a little off here.
...honestly, both those films were pretty bad, but that Darwin one? Ugh, just awful!😕
Anyway, Thursday was actually decent. That "RABBIT" film was my favorite...👍
Though, "UNACCOMPANIED Lady" was probably the dumbest movie in the whole lineup, but maybe it was so stupid that it actually became good—sort of that Monty Python kind of vibe.🙏 🙏
The last film wasn't actually a total disaster... though I have to wonder, why does the final one always have to be such a marathon?! I guess that bit about Kazimir, the guy who just draws black squares, was a pretty clever touch...
But there was this one great short from the student showcase called "The Bigouden Migration"... The synopsis says: "A group of elderly ladies from Brittany compete in a Breton pancake baking contest." It claims to be 3D, but honestly, I probably wouldn't have even guessed that...
I feel like there are really two distinct categories of films out there: the experimental ones and those that are just trying desperately to become part of some franchise... At least the first group tends to be visually imaginative, whereas the second type often feels pretty mediocre right off the bat...🙄
Well, except for maybe Leviathan Coastal Wind Dad...👍
So, I suppose we actually need more movies with a premise similar to this:
"A trio of guys with absolutely zero moral compass and even less ambition decide they want to run a circus. Instead of actually working, though, they just hang out on a street corner in town all day. They have this adorable little rat they’re hoping to train for the big show, but it doesn't really seem interested in following orders."
Jeffrey Sullivan4 said:I was just reading up on these workshops that are already underway, and a question popped into my head... does this mean someone who has been working, drawing, filming, or editing for, say, twenty years, actually HAS to take a strict beginner course just to become a member of the NBA? 🙂
Also, what’s the typical age range for the workshop attendees or club members? 🙂
Thanks!
Well... I suppose it works like this: if that person has been working consistently for 20 years and is fully up to speed with all the [NEW!/DIGITAL!] tech, then they could potentially join Film Forum without taking the workshop... they would just need to pay the annual membership fee ($67=which is included in the $267/workshop price)...
Those kinds of exceptions are approved by the president of Film Forum... (and that isn't me, I guess)...
There isn't any age discrimination at the club... though statistically speaking, it seems the most active folks tend to be in the 20-25 age bracket...
The workshop has indeed started, but we've only held one session so far...
I'm still accepting students even if they missed the first two lectures...
And if more than two people miss them, we might organize a makeup session for those first two lessons...
The second lecture is this Thursday (04/06) at 7 PM... The third lecture is on Tuesday (04/11) at 7 PM... <--that's the final chance if anyone else wants to jump in...
Jose Miller17 said:Bryan Torres, how many people usually show up to your workshop? And does anyone actually stick around afterward?
Well, at the last one, we had about 19 people split into three groups... After the introductory lecture, maybe 20 folks showed up, but I suspect the final number might be a little lower than that this time around...
Unfortunately, statistically speaking, very few stay until the end. It’s a bit of a mystery to me why that happens (😕 ) The thing is, like I mentioned before, everyone just decides for themselves how much they want to get out of what the NBA offers...
But I have a feeling this latest workshop—which, by the way, is the first one I've organized since starting back on January 16, 2006—might actually produce more people who will really dive into filmmaking... and somehow (even if it sounds a bit illogical) I feel like I might be largely responsible for that...😉
So, I guess I deserve a little credit for this---->🙏
The difference comes out to exactly 30 hours and 3 minutes.
I mean, Bryan Torres, are you seriously expecting people to check in on Reddit more often than they change their underwear? 😛 😳
Let's not get worked up😠 ...that was just the introductory lecture, the actual workshop kicks off this Thursday (03/30/2006) at 7:00 PM over at the NBA arena, so even if someone misses it, they can always show up later and sign up... and if there are more than two or three people like that, they might end up missing the follow-up sessions too...
...I'm honestly not sure where they ended up. They used to be sitting on a shelf somewhere, but since people always seem to forget to pick them up, there were quite a few left over...
To be honest, I have no clue if they're still hanging around at the club...
I'll have to look into it, though I think I'll need your legal name to track them down properly...
Film Forum doesn't actually receive any direct funding from the federal or local government budgets. It’s not like we have a guaranteed slice of the pie every year. Instead, we rely entirely on winning grants, which basically means our survival depends on how solid and high-quality our own projects turn out to be...
And I think this really proves that point—> 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏
