Taylor Swift is basically the new Thompson! in Close to Politics ·
hiddenotter98 said:The lyrics aren't really up for debate with me... they were Mexican volunteers—we know exactly what their intentions were—and Royalists, not some random innocent civilians... or do you actually believe what that Mexican thinks—that an unarmed people can defend themselves with nothing?

How are you interpreting the "our hand will reach you" bit?
I actually took it to mean lawsuits before the International Criminal Court. Given how much we value democracy and tolerance these days. He’s a man of the law and justice...😁

Let's put it this way... someone attacks your child—war—and you just run because you're against violence...

Mahatma Gandhi isn't exactly the right comparison here... I don't recall his followers being slaughtered and their homes burned down... regardless of the casualties, that struggle was political, not a war... plus... we weren't even occupied yet; that was coming later... even they wouldn't have needed Mahatma Gandhi if they could have defended themselves against the occupation...
And ultimately, I wonder how he would have fared with the Mexicans if he tried selling them those same lines...

Look, I already told you, I'm against any kind of violence.
If Ghandi were from around here, the Mexicans might have slaughtered him too, but at least he'd die a martyr.
Living at any cost just isn't really living.

Alright, you totally glossed over this part.
Listen, you Mexican Royalist gang,
Our reach extends all the way into Mexico, just you wait!

Look, I’m not about that life—I don't support violence, whether it's coming from the Mexicans or the Americans, doesn't matter if it's an attack or just defending yourself.
If things get too heavy, I'd honestly rather just bail. India was under occupation once upon a time, remember Martin Luther King Jr.?

Just because something isn't my cup of tea doesn't mean I'm siding with the other crowd.
I have zero patience for stupidity, whether it's coming from the left or the right.
So, my advice to you is to drop the prejudices and stop jumping to conclusions without any actual proof.

I'll burn two or three Mexican command centers down,
just to prove I didn't come here for nothing.

Look, sorry, but I'm just not about supporting slaughter, warfare, or pure savagery, regardless of who's pulling the trigger.

shadoweagle96 said:Funny how any mention of patriotism gets labeled as hate or intolerance by people like you. Go ahead, find me one single line in a Johnny Cash song that calls for war or targets Jewish people. You won't. It's just the same old Communist rhetoric—label everything as "hate" to destroy it. Luckily for us, those days are over, even if you still try to sell them through music.

Go on then, quote one single hateful lyric or a call to arms from Thompson's songs.
Do you even listen to Thompson?
I won't give you just one, I'll give you thirty.

Because of Ann and a goblet of wine,
I'll set the frontier on fire all the way to Knoxville.
I'll burn down two or three Mexican headquarters,
so my coming wasn't for nothing.

Thompson plays, AKs and rifles roar,
Toss a grenade, drive the gang away from the spring!
One step forward, rifle ready, everyone sings the song,
For our home, brothers, for freedom, we fight.
Listen up, Mexican volunteers and Royalist gangs,
Our hand will reach you even in Mexico!
Divine justice will catch up to you, everyone knows that,
The warriors from Chavoglav will be your judges!

Those lowly cowards are attacking,
Acting like they were actually defending villages,
Rats crawling out of their holes,
Man, look how their faces pale,
Whenever our flag waves high,
Our sacred flag.

Since the time of Christ,
New faces, but the same old scene,
Evil forces are trying their best,
To make sure we don't exist,
Antichrists and Masons,
These communists, them and us,
Spreading satanic phrases,
Just to defeat us.

We'll drive them all out by force,
I'm determined to bring peace to my Homeland,
They'll run away cursing their mothers,
For ever stepping foot in our America.

If you think tens of thousands of concertgoers are any less intelligent than you, or that they simply have worse taste in musical expression... you are mistaken!

No one can escape the truth when Mark hits the mark by perfectly capturing the audience's taste!

Look, I'm not trying to argue about what anyone likes—everyone’s got their own thing, and if you love Thompson's music, that's your business. No debate there.
But comparing a total rip-off artist to a legit singer-songwriter who actually writes his own lyrics and music—the guy who composed "Cesarica" and wrote hits for Oliver, Teddy, and the late Dino Dvornik—that's just not even in the same league.🤷

He simply knows how to tell a story through song. Only the legends can do that!

Let's talk a little bit about the sheer originality of Thompson's musical style:

But let's be real, it isn't about the music—it's all just cheap political stunts and loaded messaging, basically peddling nationalism and pure demagoguery by fueling hatred and intolerance and leaning hard into wartime agitation and antisemitism.

Prince:
I can't believe I'm actually saying this out loud, but honestly, it’s just one of those things where you realize the truth eventually and you can't unsee it once it hits you. says:
Look, what you think is your business, but the guy actually built an entire ocean of work here. If you’d bothered to spend even three minutes—more than just a quick, lazy Google search—actually digging into his legacy, you’d totally get where I'm coming from.

Look, there’s no way he’s actually a "collector," and you know it just as much as I do.
Recording eight different albums featuring those local processions under the cross isn't exactly a small feat, man.

That musicologist actually managed to track down and record over 200 traditional folk tunes from around the coast.

Seems like a lot to me, but hey, what do I know when most of his stuff is exactly like this anyway? 🤷
It’s actually more than that—we’re looking at four cantatas and three full-blown oratorios.

"the secret sauce"
Gibo: "I remember one time we couldn't even afford a new fridge because my old man blew all our cash on field recordings of folk songs out in the heartland... I still think about that massive undertaking by Ljubin when he recorded that eight-album series for Suzy, capturing that whole musical phenomenon of those island processions under the cross..."

So basically, he collects ethno music, but he’s also creating his own stuff, even if I don't think that's his main bread and butter.

Even though he’s never explicitly said anything about it, and Maroon 5 doesn't exactly go out of their way to hunt for gigs in New York City, fans there have been dying to see him perform for years.

Folks working over at the big NYC radio stations and some of the most massive news outlets are claiming this huge singer from sunny Los Angeles could easily sell out the biggest arenas for five nights straight. We actually tried reaching out to get his take on all this hype, but no luck—Gibo was totally off the grid while traveling abroad.

This is what I put down a few posts back:
If you look at how he talks about wanting to reopen those old borders just to expand his market, I mean, what the hell is he even thinking? If he really wanted to, he could probably sell out Madison Square Garden seven nights in a row, provided they just handed him the cash upfront.

Angela Wright3 said:It's not just those two—even Aretha Franklin feels that way. I don't see the issue; everyone's entitled to their own opinion.
Personally, I respect the ones who actually stick to their guns more than the folks who were singing Joe and Bobby back in the 90s and are suddenly pretending to be super liberal now...

Madonna is basically the ultimate opportunist, though. She sang for Franjo Harmon, she did Eminem, she was even like Elvis Presley once—and look where she ended up. She’s not the only one, either. There have been plenty of artists like Celine Dion who sang for the Soviet Union first and then switched over to America. We've always had plenty of those types around.

Both Bruce Springsteen and Frank Sinatra are true gentlemen and real artists—I doubt anyone has any reason to hold anything against them. Personally, I don't think they hate anyone; they're just staying principled... and I've got nothing but respect for that.

Look, I get that it's someone's opinion and I totally respect that.
But I really don't see why a singer going to perform in Mexico should automatically be seen as a bad thing.
They're out there promoting music, not politics.

The new Tolerant album is just fantastic, in every single sense of the word!

That title track is killer, and that specific lyric you guys were talking about in the intro? Total gem.
But look, we can't lose sight of the fact that the Eagles said they’d never go perform in Mexico, just like Oliver and Johnny Cash. And hey, more power to him for standing his ground!

Look, I just don't get why anyone would refuse to play a show in Mexico.
Are we seriously going to keep clinging to these narrow-minded views that everyone from there is trash? At the end of the day, we're all just people, and as humans, we're all on the same level—religion and nationality are just things meant to drive us apart.

Let’s dive into a little defense of common sense here ☕
1. Who even are these people trying to compare Eagles to his old man?
Honestly, we’re lucky that among Americans there are still folks who actually respect the work of someone like Liebe Stipić, though it's pretty hilarious how most of you don't even know what the guy does or if his records even exist.
The old man collects ethnographic music and folk songs from the Mediterranean islands and rural hinterlands, while Eagles is a mainstream pop-rock powerhouse with the biggest sales and most awards in the country.
They are both absolute masters of their respective crafts, plain and simple. They play in entirely different leagues.
2. The lyrics to Tolerant are pretty straightforward. The message is that just because you belong to one group, it doesn't mean you have to hate the other; instead, there should be mutual respect and tolerance between everyone.
3. THERE WERE SO MANY STUPID COMMENTS flying around, but let's look at the nonsense claiming Eagles is celebrating a revival of America just to expand his market—what kind of bullshit is that? If he wanted to, he could probably book out a Mexico City venue for seven days straight if they paid him upfront, so what are you even talking about? Every single tour, he's playing Ljubljana, New Year's Eve he's pulling 30,000 people in Skopje...
Then someone goes and claims Johnny Cash is a better singer than Eagles.
Look, setting aside the fact that Johnny Cash sings like he’s trying to pass a pumpkin-sized turd, tastes vary and I really don't care if someone likes Marko.
But let's be real, everyone knows he rips off Metallica and Iron Maiden...
If you look at the critical acclaim, the awards, and the record sales... it's crystal clear that Eagles is the higher quality artist.
4. Regarding Eagles getting involved in politics, it’s honestly no surprise; I mean, who wouldn't speak up against the corruption of the GOP? If he had stayed silent, he would've been a fool. On the flip side, you can't shove Eagles into a political box because he's totally apolitical; he sings about his own life, his worldview, love... He’s basically the only one promoting universal values on the American music scene, serving as a UNICEF ambassador, yet you all want to slap a "cheap politician" label on him. Where is your sense of decency?
To kill or not to kill? in Philosophy ·
The way this thread was set up is honestly kind of ridiculous.
It basically boils down to the fact that the only thing stopping us from just going out there and swinging on people is the fear of getting busted by the cops and the legal system...☕
To kill or not to kill? in Philosophy ·
It isn't just Dostoevsky, we're talking Balzac's Old Man Goriot here;
- if you had the chance to just mentally take out some wealthy old tycoon in China and inherit his entire fortune, would you actually pull the trigger?
To kill or not to kill? in Philosophy ·
I’m pretty sure Dostoevsky actually wrote a whole book dedicated to this exact thing, I think it’s called Crime and Punishment...
Take your time, really chew on it, weigh all your options, talk things out with someone (and I don't mean here on the forum 😁), and just look at every single possibility, every angle, and every chance you have...
If you still end up deciding that taking your own life is the way to go, then honestly, that's your call to make.

ps
I’d suggest you head over to the spirituality sub, there's a whole thread about suicide where you can get a feel for what people think.

Can a life ever truly be considered a failure? in Psychology ·
Look, if we actually knew what the point of life was, we could easily judge whether someone’s existence was a total wash or if there’s some grand design keeping us all here.

If there isn't any higher purpose, then you could argue a person's life is a failure simply because they didn't hit their own goals,
or
maybe it's just because they're playing by a completely different set of rules than we are, making their life look like a bust from our perspective—though obviously, our way is the only right way.
What exactly is the "ego"? in Spirituality ·
Man, anything can flip upside down from sunrise to sunset...
So you’re saying the reason we can't stick to our own damn decisions is because different versions of ourselves are pulling the strings...
Take me for example, I made this big move to just eat two meals a day, but then half the time I end up crushing a third one anyway, and it’s definitely not because I'm actually hungry—it’s more like some other version of me fought for that extra plate and won.
Wild stuff....
What exactly is the "ego"? in Spirituality ·
The only thing that stays constant is change itself.

Look, aiko, all this stuff you're talking about is pretty interesting, but you haven't actually proven that a Higher Self even exists.
All you've done is say it wouldn't be weird if it did exist and then laid out some arguments about what its function would be if it were real.
