The only thing that didn't really hit the mark for me was how the humans were animated.

Maybe the facial features bothered you? Not sure, so sorry if I'm talking nonsense here, but weren't Neanderthals roaming the Earth back then? If we recall Java from Marty Mystery, everything makes sense... 🙂

Anyway, I just watched it yesterday. Donald Duck is dead! Long live Sid the Sloth!!

I was cracking up. Especially the character names. Manfred the mammoth?! Diego the saber-toothed tiger?!?! Sid the Sloth?!?!?! 😁 😁 😁
Perfect entertainment for the day before heading back to work.

your version of "argumentation" consists of nothing but "that's boring," "it's annoying," and "just listen to what Stockhausen did." Truly brilliant analogies. Just top-tier intellectual heavy lifting right there.

So just walk me through it—why on earth don't you want to download a single MP3 from the web? 😁

I honestly can't wrap my head around it..

Not trying to meddle here, but...
it’s a total mystery to me, Benjamin Clark12. It’s like asking: what kind of masochistic, fanatic zealot would drag ten-ton stone blocks halfway across the country just to build Stonehenge? When there isn't even a quarry nearby... 😉
There isn't a logical explanation for it. Like Alex Martinez4, I suppose some people just cling to certain old-school values. That's just how it is.

Anyway, looks like Kazza is cutting it close in the final minutes. You guys hear that? 😁

So, I decided to treat myself today with a fresh helping of absolute garbage—the latest McDonald’s "penetration" attempt. And get this timing: there’s a little credit note sitting right inside:

"If anyone hosts these tracks on some shady server to offer our music for download (without our consent), we will track you down and burn your damn house to the ground. Thanks for listening."
It’s Wednesday. Honestly? I kind of dig these guys. Since half of this duo is some guy from Chicago, maybe they’ll decide to join us out here... 😁 Hey, maestro! 😁

Great. Then everyone will just go back to ignoring me again... and I'll be stuck dealing with Linda Rodriguez6 over some nonsense about Section 242. 😉

Digital soundtracks? He’s out here getting wrecked over two lousy quarters.

I’m not exactly a huge fan, but honestly? That show at Madison Square Garden was incredible. Wasn't it?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Absolutely. That instrumental track is pure gold. I actually have it recorded on a cassette somewhere—couldn't find it on my CDs for the life of me.

Even though I (just another one of my "ailments")! 🙂 I live for good samples. This track is close to my heart, even if you can barely hear them. It’s just too damn good. (Dammit! Now you've got me worked up—I need to get home and put this on loop immediately! But of course, my boss won't give me a second to breathe...) 🙂 )

It’s a shame that techno is about to take over everything... but I guess I finally see where you get that obsession with techno, house, and acid from. 😉 Where does anyone find the time or the energy to actually love that kind of "white trash" garbage? Seriously. What kind of bottom-tier collector even falls for that? 😛

Linda Rodriguez6 said:By the way, do you remember Taylor Swift a Man? That shivanayama track is such a masterpiece.

Well. That happened.
Never heard of them. Interesting stuff, though. I actually have a live recording on an old cassette somewhere. Might be worth a listen.
The last I heard about them, they were busy scoring a soundtrack for some Production Co. project.

Both literally and as a total superfan... I honestly can't wrap my head around why they felt the need to do that. What was the logic there?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You know, I actually really dug that album. They stepped away from their signature sound for a bit and leaned into some D&B and electronic vibes. It worked.
But let’s be real, that’s still miles away from their classics.

Too far.
Did you seriously not get that "D&B" isn't even in my vocabulary? 😁

The FAA had this one issue—a bit of a flaw, really. They used to jump around way too much, being far too drastic with their shifts. Now? They’ve settled into a pretty decent metal bend. Not that I want to start talking about metalheads; I'd rather not invite that kind of rage upon myself. 🙂

Linda Rodriguez6 said:I think the "III" download is great too, though it feels more like an Electrom vibe than anything Industrial.

...it’s just too much, too chaotic, and frankly, hard to follow. I’m not really into that whole "experimental mess" thing. I actually enjoy dancing.

By the way, 😛 Kevin Key is one of the most bitter opponents of the whole peer-to-peer crime wave. 😁
He wouldn't give a single cent toward even the cheapest charity. What kind of person does that?

Anyway, what’s the absolute worst CD in your collection?

For me, it’s definitely Frontline Assembly’s "Flavour of the Weak"

To me, it’s bad both literally and musically... I mean, what were they thinking?!
Though, if they actually show up at Coachella in May, like everyone on Reddit is saying, it might be worth watching them dance through it... 🙂 word is they're going there and back again... 😉

The "Requiem for Dreams" soundtrack also stinks, but hey, I did soak it in vodka once—luckily the plastic held up... 🙂

Linda Rodriguez6 said:btw, does anyone (Bryan Martin31) have the original "Man Amplified" or "Buried Dreams" by Clock Two? Those CDs are actually incredible to me

See? We can actually agree on something once in a while.
Great! 😉

uhm... I have a scratched up copy of "Buried..." 😳

"Man-Amplified" skips on me... I just keep it in the car to mess with speed traps... 🙂

"Digital Soundtracks" absolutely crushes them.

Some idiot from high school scratched my "Advantage" LP...

I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan, but that show at the local club back in '92 was killer. Wasn't it?

brrrr. 😉
Got a space heater sitting next to those shelves, do you? 😉

cody said:So, why not just burn through them once in a while?

It’s all great, but what are we supposed to do about those cheapskates who take offense like an old aunt if you dare suggest they have the wrong chronological order for a band's discography? (Not to mention their lists are incomplete, and side projects just pop up out of nowhere... basically, they don't have 🙂), yet they love lecturing everyone else on the same damn band because they think they're experts.
Even Joe Biden and Cobb can see the guy doesn't know what he's talking about. 😉

So, I called it. 😉
Don't be shy. I've spent just as much time digging through all sorts of random compilations myself... 😉

Even though my brain is basically pickled by other genres, which usually irritates our resident hipster Linda Rodriguez6 😉 obviously I've heard of Clannad, I just never actually bought anything from them.

If I remember correctly, Enya has some connection to them or something... I really dig them, at least the few tracks I've heard...
Thanks for the recommendation; I'll pick something up next chance I get (NO piracy! 😉 )

Gothic said:When I heard "It's no good" one late night back in '97, I was done... paralyzed, stunned, whatever you want to call it. [/B]

Our sweet little Gothic girl!
Now everything makes sense. That's the way to go—just keep moving forward!

Gianluca Vialla said:by veky: [The only thing I'm picky about is this: CDs have to be originals. I can't stand pirated copies. Gross! Even if I find a burned one and love it, I'll hunt everywhere just to buy the original. I know, it's pathological.] [/B]

Luca,
you just called me out as a veky, and I'm feeling a bit slow today...

Gianluca Vialla said:And downloading from the internet... totally pointless... it's cold and soulless. There's no effort involved; everything is served on a silver platter. You click a button and boom, someone's entire discography is yours. [/B]

So our Luca is truly a refined, ultra-sensitive consumer! Fine, buddy, keep it that way! Anything but these plagiarists! 😉

No, for real.
Regarding piracy—or those CDs where they claim performers are releasing them without permission—the debate over pirated copies versus listening on a PC has been all over various forums and band websites. Reactions have been split; sometimes extreme. On some sites, bands even apologized, swearing their releases would reach places like Northern America or Malaysia without those "blocks"...

My personal take is similar to Lucin's:
Why shouldn't the artists get a slice of the pie from their own work?
I'm a layman here, but I assume they have set contracts, plus they likely earn royalties from actual CD sales.

Of course, that isn't my main reason for preferring original CDs. It's purely psychological (and sometimes I risk a few blank discs because I'm too lazy to go out), not some pretentious self-righteous boasting about piracy.
Call me an idiot, but I live for the look and smell of original CD packaging! 😁

The rest of the guys said the same thing: I love walking into a record shop, whether I'm just wandering in or I have a specific idea in mind.
It’s just like buying a new car, isn't it? Isn't it better to feel like the vehicle actually belongs to you, rather than some cheap knockoff where someone else's fingerprints are all over the original? 😁

Benjamin Clark12 said:I'm in a spot where I have to save money on stuff like this... because I can't just blow my entire paycheck on music.
And look, I love music, so I make it work... just like most people. [/B]

Fair enough. But I see you get it too—you prefer the original CDs... 🙂

Look, reality doesn't hand out many luxuries to us "jaded cynics" 😉, so you take what life gives you—whether it's Napster, Kazaa, or LimeWire. That's perfectly fine, and you shouldn't feel bad about it.
I'm just one of those rare romantics, kind of like a classic old-school player. My old man was a total freak; he'd sit by the radio late at night listening to distant stations, and back in the day, he wasn't hitting up the local clubs just to hear the hits—he was there to meet people. You know what I mean. 😉

Linda Rodriguez6 said:Based on this, it sounds like following music—like, being a collector—is a privilege reserved for the rich.

Of course, I don't agree with that. [/B]

She beat me to the punch and pointed out how you're misinterpreting things... 🙂 (I don't think I missed the point...)

Kevin Chavez3 said:Hehe, I do the exact opposite—I pick up albums on vinyl for cheap (for $3.25) that I already own on CD, then I sell the CD (for maybe $5). Either I make a little cash, or I get a better way to display the record, while keeping all the perks of the CD (burning stuff for friends, making mixes, etc.), because I rip everything to MP3 before selling it. I’m pretty damn clever.

damn clever.
You're lucky if you even find a record you actually want.
Besides, you probably paid more than $20 for that CD, so looks like you actually lost money...
But since there's usually a long gap between buying and selling, the value drops below $20, so technically you're still coming out ahead (where's the priest to explain the math to me...). 🙂

Ethan Cox3 said:Another one of my favorites bought on a whim was Clannad....

Eh, they're one of those bands I'd buy without even listening first.
I once stumbled upon their music video in a bar, but there was no sound. Still, the visuals were stunning. Music paired with that kind of visual experience can't be bad. Any other recommendations?

Ethan Cox3 said:My one weakness—the CD has to be an original. I can't stand burned CDs. Gross! Even if I pick up a burned one and like it, I'd dig through every bargain bin in town just to buy the original. I know, it's pathological.

...that makes us both sickos. 🙂

Take Fuk from "Apple"...
The guy is actually pretty charming, so as a friend might say: "I'd put him in a shop window under a sign that says 'FUK! DO NOT TOUCH!!!'" 😁
Anyway, I call this type of DJ a "Napster DJ."

Technological progress hasn't done much for true enthusiasts and connoisseurs in this niche.
Who cares if you were just some kid frantically flipping through every music mag you could find, hoping to catch a two-sentence review of your favorite band or a tiny photo... 😁 nowadays, that's just a "click of a mouse."
It's the same deal with acquiring music...
Actually, I used to obsess over this way more, but eventually, you accept the fact that an indie fan is just a frequent guest at those trendy sidewalk cafes serving exotic food, and you realize times have changed... For now, I'm successfully avoiding getting stepped on by them, but who knows when I'll finally snap... 😁

Ryan Ruiz said:Hmm... I won't count the average so I don't have a stroke. No, really, that's what I've collected over the last 5 years.

Good lord! I was listening to Kajagoogoo, Nina, and Magazin when I was 11, and you've been into dark stuff since you were tiny. Respect.😉

Ryan Ruiz said:97% of the time when I head downtown to hit up some CD shops, I’m looking for a deal. Usually, by the time I’m done, I end up with about $33
Out of the stuff I own, I probably only have four burned copies; the rest are originals. With other bands, it varies—some are originals, some are burned.

which makes for a pretty impressive average, honestly.

I don't want anyone to take this the wrong way or throw a rock at me, but ripping CDs is fine. It’s just that, beyond the legal gray area, there's still this lingering, bitter feeling from a purely human perspective...
especially when you run into one of those "experts" who downloads an entire discography in two days for a band they claimed was a total, obscure, deep-cut mystery just forty-eight hours ago—only to spend today acting like they're a walking encyclopedia of the band's entire history...

then again, maybe I'm just a bigger elitist and a bigger freak than all of them... 😳

dustynomad said:You have to listen to the mediocre albums just to make the good ones sound even better.

Hi, I hadn't thought of it that way.

It’s actually better when you haven't listened to something for a long time—something you used to blast constantly like an idiot. Then you finally put it on your player, turntable, Walkman, whatever, and suddenly realize... wow, this is sooo goooood... 😁

John Thomas2 said:I own absolutely everything Nick has ever released.

😛 You don't, kid! 😁 Well, that’s because of the Scientist... 😉

There was a period where I was obsessed with buying CDs for bands I already owned on vinyl or crappy bootleg tapes. But man, that gets expensive... 🙄

I haven't downloaded anything from the internet since Napster went under... I'm a total jinx, and whenever I try, nothing works.

Ryan Ruiz said:For example, I have everything by Depeche Mode because I’d lose my mind if I were missing an album.

gothie,
Q: If you're exactly 16 right now—and if you own almost everything by Joy Division, Sisters, Depeche Mode, Paradise Lost, and the rest—can you tell me how many albums you buy on average per week? Just curious.
If you've already heard it all, fine.

My pattern is usually going six months without buying a single album, then suddenly grabbing four in two weeks, then being broke again, so I have to lay low...
Quality, collecting, and the hype... in Music ·
It’s not just the people on this forum, but I’ve gotten the impression that a lot of folks here get carried away by the mere act of collecting albums, regardless of whether their favorites actually produced anything worth hearing...

I knew a girl back in high school who owned exactly 50 Depeche Mode records! If that isn't hardcore collecting, I don't know what is...

Do you guys also suffer from this irrational urge to own every single thing an idol ever released, or would you rather spend your cash on a burger than on some album you already know is a waste of money?
Do you ever find yourselves buying an album without having any clue how it actually sounds, or do you hold back because you refuse to forgive your favorite band for one mediocre slip-up?

Personally, I’ve been known to buy a record from some obscure band only to be deeply disappointed, or I end up hating the very state the seller lives in for recommending it to me.

Then again, I’ve skipped albums from bands I love just because I wasn't feeling them. And a few times, I definitely screwed up by buying something "blind"...
