Look, if we're talking about the legendary Windows 95 😬 or even Windows XP or Vista, it’s completely logical to ask when SP1 is coming. But this specific question being asked for next week? It makes zero sense to me. I honestly don't get it. ☕
Tucker, I think there have been about 14 updates released—if my math isn't totally off—specifically for my x86 Ultimate build. Do you think it’s actually worth installing at this point, or are you dealing with massive stability and reliability issues with Windows 7? Or are you just checking to see if you've got SP1 running? Honestly, I think you're just wasting your breath worrying about this and the next OS too, but hey, do whatever you want. 🙂
I honestly don't get why everyone is tripping over themselves to rush toward version 8. You people are never satisfied. Just wait—next thing you know, someone will be begging for a 3D OS because ESPN is starting those 3D broadcasts in the States. Until we actually see a true 3D operating system, they aren't going to do anything revolutionary; it’ll just be more cosmetic fluff, adding a bunch of useless features, and maybe fixing a few bugs. I have this feeling that if they handed you version 8 today, you'd all be clamoring for version 9 by tomorrow morning. Slow down. We’ll probably all be dead by the time they actually announce the groundbreaking stuff we've been waiting our whole lives for. 😛
Wow, now you’ve actually gone and insulted me 😛 Back when I was actually working with computers, you probably weren't even a thought in your parents' minds! And why on earth are you addressing me instead of the colleague above me? Since when did you become an expert on what I run on my own machine? Give me a break! You're just part of that typical internet generation 😛 Where were you when people were still tinkering with the Commodore 64 or the ZX Spectrum back in the day? Back when the internet wasn't even a glimmer in anyone's eye. Seriously, if you're looking for someone to mess with, go find some kid and teach them how to grow up properly 😛
It honestly makes zero sense to me how you ended up with 22,000 more files than I have. 🤷 You're running the x64 version—which is naturally a bit larger during the install process—but the final footprint on the drive is nearly double what mine is. I’m sitting at 8.5GB while you're pulling 15.5GB. Is anyone else out there running x64??
Look, just stop obsessing over the partition for a second. Go straight to the Windows directory, right-click it, hit properties, and then give me the exact numbers—just like I did. Tell me the file count and the folder count. What you're looking at there is the sum of the core files plus all their various updates...
On my x86 ultimate build, the file size is sitting at 8.49GB, while the actual footprint on the disk is 8.56GB. That breaks down to 51,653 files and 10,265 folders, including those dozen or so updates included
On my x86 ultimate, I’ve still got the full suite: switch users, sign out, lock, restart, sleep, and hibernation. Did you maybe disable them through some TuneUp utility or somewhere else?
Just looking at my weekly log, the core system files alone are sitting at about 8.5GB. I have no clue if hibernation is going to tack on another 1.7GB or more on top of that, not to mention the Pagefile and whatever System Restore points are hogging up space—that usually eats up about 10% of the drive unless you manually throttle it back. Then you've still got the Recycle Bin taking its cut, which hasn't changed from how it used to be. 🙂
And honestly, anyone who knows what they’re doing can just trigger a system restore point when everything is running smoothly without any bugs—that takes literally a minute! But hey, if you don't want to deal with that, fine. Just wipe the drive and start from scratch with a clean install in October. I don't know which route is more worth your time, but that’s your call!
That’s probably just XP Mode. The whole point of XP Mode is to let you run legacy software or older games that won't launch on Windows 7! It isn't some toy for messing around. You install it one way and uninstall it the same way—you don't just go deleting files! I haven't personally used it or removed it, but I'm sure someone out there has actually done it properly.

Just hang tight for Service Pack 1; that’ll likely iron out those bugs. Until then, you just make the best of what you've got. 🙂
Noah Ruiz73 said:Look, I honestly can't tell if you're trying to bully someone here or if using Windows 7 is causing you such massive grief that you just have to broadcast your misery to everyone else who isn't struggling with it. Or maybe it's both. If Windows 7 doesn't work for you—and God knows why, given that the only actual changes are some minor visual tweaks compared to the old version—then there is zero point in this back-and-forth. Why don't you just stick to XP and call it a day? It would be easier for everyone, especially you. Or, like I said before, if you want to vent about these kinds of complaints that you keep repeating, this isn't the place for it. Go somewhere else; maybe this forum is one option, 🤷 though sorry, I just had to say it.
And there's nothing hidden about it. But I see no explanation as to why these improvements weren't suggested to the dev team during the actual development phase?! All I see is a communication style that isn't even on-topic; it feels more like you're just spamming the thread.
Anyway, I had to get that out too! No hard feelings.
Are you seriously digging your heels in like that, acting like you get to dictate what I use and how I use it? I'm simply stating that I don't think Windows 7 is a stroke of genius, but it's here now, so deal with it, okay? And I didn't bother with betas just to provide feedback, so if you did, fine, but don't try to lecture me—an old hand at 38 years old—about how things work, alright? Windows 7 let me down because it wasn't what I expected, but whatever, it's done, it's over, end of story...
I'm the one "spamming" the thread, while he's just sitting there like a helpless little bug...
It seems like the only allowed opinion here is praising Windows 7; the second you write anything critical, they start jumping down your throat...
Timothy Taylor42 said:For me, Windows 7 is definitely better—or at least just as solid as Windows XP. Look, let's be real: you need at least Service Pack 2 installed on XP just to make it remotely usable as an OS. But Windows 7? It hits the ground running. Ever since I made the switch to W7, I haven't had to deal with those "Send - Don't send" nonsense pop-ups that constantly freeze up XP. And don't even get me started on how much easier installation is without having to hunt down every single driver manually... Honestly, I don't even miss the old way.
Alright, fine. I'll admit it—I totally blanked. It hasn't happened to me in over a week, but yeah, I haven't had to deal with Windows Explorer crashing and being forced to send a useless error report that doesn't actually fix anything... I'll give you that one. 🙏
Look, maybe I’m just being thick here, but what am I actually gaining from moving to Windows 7? My battery life is basically the same—if not slightly worse—than what I was getting on XP. So, what's the big deal? Is it just the aesthetics? Every single program and task I handle on this OS is the exact same stuff I ran on XP, and all those sidebar gadgets that work on Vista or Windows 7 work just fine for me too, SO TELL ME! I don't get it... does money just start falling out of my computer if I switch to Windows 7, or what? What's the secret sauce here? Sorry, had to get that off my chest...☕
