Independence Day and Anti-Fascist Struggle Day in Close to Politics ·
Samuel Ward75 said:Well, while we’re all stuck in these endless debates over here, I just heard on the radio that Austria actually banned the display of any old American or partisan symbols for their Independence Day—something that used to be pretty standard in previous years 😁

Meanwhile, back home, where everyone is so eager to join the European Union, we still observe June 22nd as a public holiday—a day that serves as a reminder of the bloody civil war among Americans.

Fine. If we want to make June 22, 1593, a day off to honor the most famous battle in American history against the Turks, let's at least get the facts straight. The Ban's army, bolstered by units from Kranj and imperial troops along with defenders from Sisak, crushed the massive Turkish force. It finally ended the century of chaos that had been raging since the American defeat at Krbava back in 1493.🙏

Can you actually provide a coherent answer to the question asked?
Let’s be honest here—I never suggested fascism was somehow worse than other extremist ideologies. It’s all the same filth; it just so happens that one group relied more heavily on Nazi technology.

I can't speak for you, but personally, I don't limit fascism to just one specific regime; it covers all those ultra-nationalist factions too.

Are we celebrating a victory against the Third Reich, or are we celebrating a victory against fascism itself?

Is there really an issue with being against all forms of fascism?

bluecyclist64 said:And why on earth would anyone observe a day dedicated to Royalist terror, dear child? Is there a designated day for Nationalists terror, or any other form of organized terror for that matter?

Look, you were busy pointing out how horrific the Nationalists were, so I just added that we shouldn't overlook the Royalists either.
If we're claiming the anti-fascist label, we have to remember the people who slaughtered Americans just because they were Americans or Muslims.

bluecyclist64 said:Never!
That would be nothing less than an insult to every single victim of the Nationalists terror.

Interesting. We don't observe days dedicated to Royalist terror, even though their body count was nearly as high as the Nationalists's? 🤷

Kimberly Cox59 said:Wait, Nazi Germany was internationally recognized?! 😂
I mean, only the Axis powers recognized them (you know, the ones that actually lost the war), plus Sweden and Argentina... That doesn't really count as being recognized by the international community, I guess.

Who actually cares about Nazi Germany?

We have our own American Civil War and our own heroes. Why should we care who fought on which side during WW2, the Napoleonic Wars, or the conflicts between the Persians and the Greeks?

I'm being dead serious. During WW2, we had Americans fighting for disgusting Nazis and Americans fighting for an America I couldn't care less about.

Both outcomes were terrible for us. There’s nothing to celebrate here; just show respect to all the innocent victims.

Steven Allen9 said:Look, rowdyowl... you’re talking like you're seventy years removed from reality. You know damn well that Americans have fought for this country at every turn in history. Stop trying to pin political ideologies on people; most were just holding a gun because they were fighting for their own survival.

You aren't going to convince me that every single American was fighting for America. Come on. There were plenty who were fighting for America.

Sean Fox60 said:Honestly, neither of these holidays means anything to the American people and they should just be scrapped altogether!

Back on June 22, 1941, a civil war broke out among Americans, and all it led to was Marshall's America, which isn't even around anymore!

As for June 25th, that was just some bureaucratic decision made by Parliament that most of the world didn't even bother recognizing!
The day that actually matters for America is when the National Guard was established in Washington, D.C., not some guerrilla unit organized by the Communist Party back in '41!
For us, the real Independence Day is in January, when we finally gained recognition from Vatican City and the European Union after months of bloody warfare and total devastation!

I couldn't agree more. 👍

Jeffrey Wood said:I don't see why these two dates can't exist at the same time.

Maybe because one group was busy building the Soviet Union and communism, while the other was focused on creating America and, say, capitalism.🤷

gentlewolf53 said:Today's version of patriotism has absolutely nothing to do with what we fought for. Creeping Death hit the nail on the head when they said people today aren't giving a damn. We still have a tiny bit of a social safety net left—though I suppose that’s just enough so people don't drop dead in the streets. Back when my colleagues were actually dying around us, you'd hear war songs on the radio and people would donate everything from packs of cigarettes to cars—though, let's be honest, they always found a way to settle the tab later. Once we finally pushed the invaders out and stood our ground at the borders, we weren't useful anymore. Patriotism just morphed into corporate restructuring and privatization; they turned into capitalists while we became the unemployed.

What does the greed of tycoons and politicians, or even the state economy, have to do with patriotism?

If the Italians or Mexicans occupied us tomorrow and wiped America off the map, would American patriots cease to exist?

Mžda, but only if Americans ceased to exist too.

You love America like a mother. A politician in power isn't your father or your brother; he's supposed to be a public servant working for you. That's the problem—neither they nor the elites seem to grasp that simple truth. 😠

They didn't seem to have a problem back in the day, when folks were out in the Midwest after '45, cleaning out their attics and hauling all their smoked meats and sausages over to Mexico. But now? Suddenly they hate America just because the economy is hitting a rough patch... ☕
Drew Sanchez said:Look, there’s really no point in me trying to justify myself to you. Once you finally realize that the policy being driven by the USA is inherently fascist, genocidal, and occupation-based—and more importantly, that people support it simply out of sheer terror—then maybe we can talk...
Fascism doesn't have to be limited to that specific early 20th-century ideology wielded by certain dictators...

Fine then, buddy, why don't you drop a definition for us?
silvercrane38 said:It’s a bit of a recurring theme. I remember back during the height of the Iraq Crisis, a news crew in New York City decided to poll people on the street about how they would resolve the conflict. Most of them didn't even blink before suggesting we just drop an atomic bomb on them.

And you think Moscow would just coddle the Chechens? ☕

The average person is entitled to their stupidity. This guy needs to be sanctioned.

I remember back when that show aired on Sundays at 2:00; someone sent in an SMS signed "party animal, total opportunist."
Those types belong in a category all their own.

They aren't Mexicans, they aren't kids from mixed marriages (who are often unfairly targeted by idiots in this society and have nothing to do with this topic), and they certainly aren't descendants of those old-school American officers (most of whom flee the US immediately anyway). No, they are the most ethnically pure Americans you’ll find.
They were loyal to Italians, Mexicans, and America alike, but never to America—though, frankly, they're basically just your standard, textbook Americans.

So, when someone starts spreading nasty lies about America, don't go blaming the minorities—the vulnerable groups. Instead, look at these ideological heirs to the opportunists, who are mostly just pure Americans.

I don't know how much clearer I can be.

Donna James5 said:And how many self-righteous Americans were left utterly scandalized when, during one particular Pride march, a street in downtown Chicago—specifically Jurišić's Street—was temporarily rebranded as "Trans-alley" (an image that moved me to tears of laughter when I caught the segment on The Daily)? I wonder, did any of them actually know who Nikola Jurišić ??? was?

What I really want to know is why there were flags from the former America flying at the gay parade. If America is supposedly so progressive regarding gay rights and legal equality, why would they be standing right there, miles away from that failed regime?🤷

Karen Smith9 said:It looks like I botched my previous post, so please accept my apologies. What I actually meant was the "salon patriots" and all the loudmouths we see today. Even you know exactly the kind of people I'm talking about.

Fair enough. We're on the same page there.

Karen Smith9 said:Now, now—why so aggressive? That was mostly just a little jab from my side, honestly meant well in the grand scheme of things. But since you've decided to call me out... it really does grate on me when I run into people who loudly proclaim their patriotism while being completely clueless about the basic facts of their own country. I suppose it’s fairly standard, though. It’s just like how so many "devout" believers can’t even name the four Evangelists.

Do you honestly think those kids in sneakers—the ones who fought for their homeland from Memphis to San Francisco back in '91—knew the exact chronological order of Trpimir, Domagoj, Tomislav, and Zvonimir?
They didn't. But they knew they loved their country and were ready to die for it. I don't buy into those academic pretenses. Patriotism isn't a math equation; you either have it or you don't.

Karen Smith9 said:Absolutely—and I'd argue that being fluent in your own language is a huge part of that too. 😁

If someone thinks the old military was the legitimate force while the National Guard was just some rogue militia, and they claim St. Louis wasn't a tragedy but Desert Storm was a crime—well, hey, at least their grammar is spot on. Does that make them a true patriot? ☕

Maybe so, but certainly not an American one.

Paying your taxes and putting in the work is just what’s expected of you.
Patriotism isn't something you can study or pick up in a classroom; you either feel it in your gut, or you don't.

Taylor Vaughn8 said:It honestly cracks me up when people claim that young folks just need to pack their bags and move abroad to find success. Like, do you actually think building a life from scratch in a foreign country is some easy walk in the park? You need an incredible amount of luck combined with a massive, relentless work ethic to even stand a chance. Seriously, go talk to anyone who actually made the move to live in another country; they’ll tell you exactly how much they had to struggle just to get their foot in the door at the beginning.
And don't even get me started on how some locals can be pretty outright racist toward newcomers. Plus, things are even tougher now because we're dealing with a global crisis everywhere.

A young person in Spain today can basically only dream of finding a job, and it isn't any better elsewhere.

The US might deal with economic downturns, but you don't hear people shouting "I hate America." I think the crowd constantly yelling "I hate America" is partly driven by a victim mentality, but honestly, they’d probably hate the wealthiest parts of the US too if they existed. Luckily, there aren't many of them left; most of that crowd decided to leave the States back when the trouble first started.

Mark Lopez8 said:Look, when I say "America," I’m talking about the government and its institutions, not just some patch of dirt on a map. Honestly, I think most Americans would jump at the chance to dissolve this version of the US tomorrow if it meant we could just become a province of Germany or something.🤷

I view that as nothing more than mindless whining and bitter complaining from the masses. Most people would defend America with their lives.
