I don't believe in anything anymore in Psychology & Therapy ·
Adam Reed5 said:Hey everyone! I'm new here... I've been lurking for a bit reading through everything, so I finally decided to jump in and share what's been weighing on my mind.

I don't really believe in anything. Not love, not truth, not freedom, God, science... I don't know... I just don't have any ideals. There's no "meaning" for me, just the practical value of things.

And people? I don't trust them either. Not even friendship. Honestly, I get along best with people who lie all the time, because then I don't have to believe a single word they say 🤷

I don't have much respect for anything... except maybe nature. I don't really hold strong stances on anything. Like, when there’s some massive national debate about a new policy or a big election cycle... I just can't bring myself to care. It's hard to care when you don't trust the news being fed to us anyway.

My behavior is pretty irresponsible, too. Toward others—like, I'll be great with someone one day, then just change my number and vanish forever because, again, I don't believe in friendship—and toward myself, like with how I handle intimacy. Not to mention daily responsibilities or obligations. I just don't have goals or desires.

So, basically, I could probably check out by tomorrow...

It doesn't bother me much most of the time, except for those moments (maybe this is one of them) where I wash up and think—how am I actually living like this? How long can this go on? Then I just tell myself—whatever, it'll work out somehow. What's the point of "purpose"? It's just an illusion anyway. And I just go back to my old ways.

I mostly just operate on pure impulse or sheer spite.
But I'm not some heartless jerk, if anyone's wondering. I think I'm a decent person. I'd never intentionally exploit or hurt someone just because it's convenient for me.

But I feel like I can't keep going like this forever. I don't want to wake up when I'm old and realize I've spent my whole life with absolutely nothing to show for it.
I wish I had at least one principle, any kind of principle (as long as it isn't destructive), just so I had something to guide me. Something that makes my behavior consistent for more than two days in a row.

I feel like a leaf blowing in the wind. I'm doing okay for now, but it's not really leading anywhere...

Does anyone have any advice? What do you believe in, and why? Do you have some sort of "code" you live by?

Everything sounded fine until you mentioned that lack of responsibility toward yourself. Before that, I would have told you to stop looking for yourself and realize you're just a blank slate waiting to be written on—which means you're full of potential! Very few people truly "know" what they care about right away; it’s usually a long process of self-discovery, and that takes time.

That said, a lack of accountability can sometimes stem from how you were raised—maybe an older relative didn't pass down certain life lessons properly. But it's much worse if this irresponsibility comes from a genuine "I don't give a damn" attitude. You can fix the first issue, but if you persist with the second, that mindset can eventually lead to deeper struggles, like clinical depression.

If you’re looking for pure realism, stick to documentaries instead of feature films. And maybe try actually watching the movie instead of just skimming the surface before you start attacking it.

Does my point make a bit more sense to you now that you've had a moment to digest it?

Forgive me, Your Majesty,😉for spitting on your precious masterpiece with all these little financial document tricks and cinematic maneuvers.
I won't do it anymore...😂
until the next opportunity arises!

It’s clear the director got exactly what they wanted, and unfortunately, most people view her that way too. They completely ignore everything she went through—being assaulted as a child, spending half her life in psychiatric wards, then being assaulted again as an adult. If you actually account for all that trauma, it’s hardly surprising she’s a bit different.
I suppose she'd be easier to relate to if she wore pigtails, a pink dress, and acted as sweet as a little kitten. 🙄

In that case, she's totally "wrong." According to some standard psychological profile from the FBI, a cinematic character like that should basically follow the rules of the seventh art: pointy ears slightly damaged from washing, a loud neon hairstyle, a chain piercing through her ear all the way down to her jaw, and maybe even bolted to her tibia with iron... she could probably use that to take out both the director and the cameraman in a single shot. Add in some claws like a Siberian tiger, and she’d have that Xena Warrior Princess sweetness right up until she suddenly wakes up....😁

Pigtails, cute little beauty marks on a button nose, a pink dress, and a lollipop? She can do all that off-set, in her private time.

Morgan Rodriguez57 said:Well, if that’s how you feel, then the Swedish creators really nailed it... because in the books, the characters actually think she's messy and they question her hygiene too... she’s basically rude to everyone, honestly... it’s just that only a tiny handful of people are smart or empathetic enough to see what’s actually going on beneath the surface...

She triggers such strange, almost repulsive emotions that the average viewer just can't bring themselves to care about all the crap happening to her—if that's the case, I'd say they missed the mark there.

And let's be real, it isn't about being "dirty" on the outside; it's about something internal, because it's our own reaction inside ourselves that makes us feel that way.

The guy literally said they keep all the financial books because it's an internal rule for their family business, not because of some legal mandate or whatever.

Honestly, those little details are exactly what make a movie—and life itself—feel real.

Rebecca Sanders2 said:I caught a Swedish film on PBS the other day, and honestly, it was great. Sure, the ending is a bit goofy, but I didn't mind at all—I really enjoyed the ride. It didn't feel dragged out, and the atmosphere was spot on, perfectly captured. To be blunt, I couldn't stand the character Lisbeth, and I don't really get why everyone is obsessing over Rooney Mara, but even that didn't ruin my overall impression. The movie itself is solid.
In a week or two, once things quiet down a bit, I'm going to hit the theater to check out Fincher's version.

The movie is decent enough, except for the female lead—she’s totally unlikable and comes off as just plain gritty. As far as the writing goes, I found it a bit hard to swallow, especially when they start digging into financial records from fifty years ago. Maybe—and I highly doubt this—but perhaps there's some rule out there requiring those documents to be kept for half a century, though I don't think that would fly here in the States.

There is definitely hope! Honestly, my best advice? Go see a therapist. You’re living in a constant state of high alert, and it’s clearly wrecking your sleep. You need a safe space—someone you can actually trust—to just vent and dump all that heavy stuff you've been bottling up. Having a professional to talk through this rough patch with makes a world of difference.
Look, your hands are tied when it comes to the situation with your mom, but please, try not to let things boil over with your dad either. Everyone deals with hardship differently—and I'm not making excuses for him—but maybe he's just acting out because he's scared. Sometimes people lean into politics just to feel like they have some semblance of control when everything else is falling apart.
Focus your energy on supporting your mom and sister. There’s really no point in picking fights with your dad about how he acts; it just drags you into a conflict that won't help you or your mom in the long run.

Hang in there. When life hits you this hard, it takes so much grit just to say, "I don't know how to do this, I need help."
A pro can give you the support you deserve.

Angela Cox4 said:Aha, so now that we’ve decided that’s actually a pretty catchy sentence, we’re left with the real head-scratcher—is it even grammatically sound or just some weird linguistic fluke?
If I’m following your logic correctly, you're basically saying that people who actually have stuff to dream about are living these mediocre, lackluster lives because they're fundamentally lacking in vision.

That's a wild way to look at it.

But seriously, how are you supposed to actually achieve anything in this life if it wasn't already part of some grand, delusional dream you had beforehand?

First off, what comes first? Is it us or our dreams? Do we dream in order to live, or do we live just so we can dream... that's the big question right there.😛

Angela Cox4 said:So, I stumbled upon this heavy-duty sentence the other day—not even my own thought, just something some girl said:

"Just imagine being someone who never even had something to dream about."

It really makes you wonder if it's just a quirk of how we phrase things or something deeper...😕

I mean, having "something to dream about" could imply that we are actually the ones crafting the very raw materials used to build our dreams later on. If that's the case, we're hit twice—once by a lackluster existence and again by a total lack of imagination to fuel our nighttime visions...🤷

It reminds me of what Shakespeare once wrote about us being "made of the stuff of dreams," or something along those lines...

Keep that free spirit of yours alive, but don't let the world lull you into a stupor—you wouldn't want to fall asleep at the wheel, would you?

Well, if she knows how to use the key and the open door you've provided—namely, your data and your increasingly generous goodwill—then nothing is too easy for her. The higher you climb, or the deeper you venture, the more clearly everything comes into view, doesn't it?

Guard your willpower! Be careful; don't just hand it out to anyone who asks.

Seek first the heavenly kingdom, and everything else will fall into place.

Let's just say the world and I aren't exactly on speaking terms.

You’re the one playing tarot; those images are nothing more than mirrors—there's no such thing as coincidence!
The logic is simple, really—the better you get at understanding your own internal wiring, the easier it becomes to decode everyone else. It’s all connected, isn't it?
The logic is pretty straightforward—the more you master your body, cleanse your soul, and awaken your spirit, the more clarity you gain. It’s simple, really: greater self-mastery equals greater insight. Or am I overthinking it?

If she didn't pull this off solo, then she definitely had some help from her crew.
You get exactly what you pay for when it comes to help—it’s a simple equation, really. If you want top-tier talent, don't expect to find them working for peanuts.

Only within the truth can one find the truth.

Jonathan Chase78 said:I suppose you could look at it that way. Then again, everything depends entirely on the perspective of the observer, doesn't it?

There isn't exactly a circus up in the heavens.

But in other realms, there are people—performers, if you will—who spend their lives trapped in a circus of their own making.
And when we use the word "circus," we can pretty much mean whatever we want, right?
For these performers, those little spectacles are essentially just their own private versions of hell.

I should have known things wouldn't be moving forward without a mention of hell...😲

Jonathan Chase78 said:Wonderful—so you're familiar with the tarot card (spirituality), I see. Now, why don't you just try being the image itself?

The reason:

"Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for theirs is the heavenly kingdom."

Truly, He said, unless one receives the kingdom of God like a child, they will absolutely—under no circumstances—ever enter it.

Otherwise, if you don't, the road can be incredibly long, and the destination? Well, that’s distant and questionable at best.
It’s all too easy to lose your way and wander aimlessly for what feels like an eternity.

Honestly, this has absolutely nothing to do with the butterfly...😢
Carol Diaz said:Let’s talk about human life. If we follow your logic to its natural conclusion, why isn't a head of lettuce worth as much as a dog? You might argue it’s because dogs possess sentience while lettuce does not, but then again, there are plenty of people who insist plants feel pain. To me, both arguments are equally absurd; your stance is simply a byproduct of being biologically closer to a dog than a vegetable, making it naturally difficult for you to identify with a head of lettuce.

That isn't true. Dogs are inherently aggressive animals that survived in the wild by hunting in packs or scavenging carcasses. The fact that certain breeds today don't seem particularly aggressive toward humans is merely because we have selectively bred them just as we breed cattle to meet specific needs. We find ourselves circling back to the reality that they are tools utilized by the human species.

🙂That sounds like someone who has never actually spent a single day living with a dog.
And now they're claiming the Boy Scouts of America are aggressive too...😁
