Getting inappropriate DMs? in Feedback & Suggestions ·
rustydrifter10 said:I didn't actually get your report through because our system is acting up, but just so you know, that user sent a really inappropriate message to another lady on the forum whose report did go through. He’s basically a clone of a previously banned user, so we just hit him with a permanent ban on this profile too. Fingers crossed he stays away from you!

Thanks! Honestly, it’s not like it’s a huge disaster or anything, but it still feels a bit tacky having people like that hanging around here.

Ugh, I wasn't really sure how to handle it, so I just deleted it. Honestly, Tapatalk drives me up the wall sometimes.

It wasn't even a huge deal enough to lose my cool over. It just felt like some weirdo's manifesto being left out in public parks and probably blasted to anyone who happens to walk by.

Edit - okay, scratch that, I didn't delete it, I just blocked them! Just reported the profile too. Thanks for the tip!

So, I just got this super creepy and totally inappropriate DM from some user named rimtutitukiloma. Honestly, based on what they sent, it feels like I’m dealing with a total creep who probably sends these kinds of messages to everyone they see. Could the mods please take a look at this guy and maybe do something about it?

Thanks a bunch!

I mean, obviously, "our education system" is responsible for everything.
If it didn't exist and we just left upbringing and schooling entirely up to the parents, America would probably be a total paradise.
In every possible sense, I guess.🙂

Sorry, but it seems like only parents and students view it that way.

Why on earth would that—and for whom, really?—be any easier?

That wasn't me making some sweeping generalization. I was talking directly to the people who couldn't wait to start throwing shade without even bothering to ask why. Honestly, I think it’s a bit ridiculous that anyone would question my right to have an opinion.

Kids have almost zero idea how to actually *use* the internet for anything productive, beyond texting, posting photos, watching YouTube, and gaming. And that's something anyone who actually spends time with them would know.

This kind of parental attitude is pretty much the norm anyway. The moment a child is required to actually engage their brain on something unfamiliar—panic sets in. Heaven forbid they actually think for themselves! And yet, they demand "reform."
Reform won't mean less rote memorization and playing school; it means actually using one's intellect. But I suspect we'll only hear the whining once people realize "it wasn't in the textbook"!!!
Good luck to us all ☕

My daughter just got an assignment for her English class to write an essay about a famous historical figure or event. She spent three whole days glued to her computer (she's a pro at navigating the web), digging through biographies to find someone interesting and researching cool historical moments... She actually loved it. She wouldn't stop talking about it. Before this, she had that unknown unknown unknown, and she had a blast translating tricky words and debating the events, the characters, the whole point of it all...

I've noticed it with other subjects too, where the kids get totally fired up and genuinely interested. They start digging into the details on their own, soaking everything up, and just love talking about what they found...

But teaching population density in Kazakhstan? Honestly, that just feels so pointless... You can't teach something in geography that actually gives kids useful knowledge or sparks a desire to go out and learn more on their own. Because if you teach them stuff like that, they definitely won't be inspired.

Google during a test? And in a class that isn't even computer science? Are we even living in the same country? I mean, half the time the laptops glitch out during actual tech class anyway...

It’s not like I’m misreading the situation here. It just honestly hurts my soul to watch kids engage in this mindless rote memorization that's basically designed to be forgotten the second the bell rings.

My gut feeling is that some educators are just resisting letting go of these totally pointless drills. It would clearly make their jobs way harder if they actually had to teach kids how to think logically or learn stuff that's actually useful in the real world.

Now, don't get me wrong—I don't think everyone is like that. My English teacher gives us assignments where we actually enjoy digging things up online, and the history teacher keeps us hooked with these cool extra facts that make you want to learn more. Same goes for German, and in English lit, we get to write these super creative essays... But yeah, some people just take the path of least resistance. I get it, though. Honestly, it's just easier that way.

wanderingbadger44 said:Honestly, who actually has the patience to memorize every single latitude, longitude, and mountain range, let alone decode what all those different colors on a physical map are trying to tell you? Not to mention trying to factor in how much the coast affects the weather versus being stuck deep in the Midwest.

It’s just easier to grind through the studying now and then complain about how much work it was later.

Did I mention before that studying this stuff is pointless? Didn't I? So what's the deal here? Is this just about needing to shut someone down because they dared to offer a critique, regardless of what it was?

Look, no matter what a parent posts in here, there’s always going to be a few folks—usually the academic types—ready to jump down your throat. Honestly, you guys can talk all you want, but I’m perfectly happy just watching our kids graduate from high school or college and actually land jobs. Seeing what our education system is actually churning out is enough for me.

The whole issue isn't about "Googling" things. Let’s be real, kids today are way faster at finding answers online than most of their teachers are. The problem is that dry, useless curriculum that exists just so they can cram it into their heads, pass a test, get a grade, and then immediately forget everything they learned.
School Reform: Thoughts? in Students & Teens ·
I mean, I gotta say, this feels kind of silly to me, sorry.
It’s just like when you have computer science classes where they’re still wasting time teaching kids about floppy disks...

I wouldn't even be surprised if the teachers were totally on board with it, too.

I can't believe I actually found this thread! It’s such a vibe. Honestly, just seeing people talking about this makes my whole morning better. Anyway, hope everyone is having a killer day! kaže:
Hey, could you please let me know who the author is? I’m trying to track down the specific textbook title where this is mentioned—you know, the one that actually expects students to have this stuff down.🙂
School Reform: Thoughts? in Students & Teens ·
So, she told me it’s just some kind of workbook, but I won't know for sure which one until tonight.

Seriously though, who actually benefits from grinding through useless facts that everyone's just going to forget by tomorrow? It’s such a waste of time when you could be focusing on stuff that actually matters, even if it isn't officially part of the school curriculum.

If you really want to teach yourself discipline, you might as well just give yourself a good smack on the wrist. ☕ It’s about as productive as anything else we're doing here.
School Reform: Thoughts? in Students & Teens ·
I don't know about you guys, but I've been feeling super mellow lately. Just one of those vibes where everything feels light and easy. It’s like that feeling when you finally catch a green light after being stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the I-95. Just total bliss. Anyway, hope everyone is having a killer day! kaže:
Come on, please! Just tell me who the author is and what textbook this is from? I need to know which book is actually asking students to memorize all this stuff.🙂

I honestly have no clue if this stuff came straight out of a textbook, a workbook, or if they just dictated it to them on the spot. It’s not like I’m in a massive rush to check it once we get home, but let’s be real—since you’re always going to have your own "takes" and those long-winded rants about your specific views anyway, I think I'll skip checking it for your sake. I'll do it for anyone else, though, besides you and maybe two or three other people who act just like you.

You really think I made up Uzbekistan just to take a swing at teachers? Seriously? It’s like you automatically assume parents are out to get them. You always jump straight to the worst-case scenario with us.

rowdypanther12 said:If this actually works out, I’m going to tell my mom to stop making my kid study geography altogether. After all, the world is clearly just a flat plane carried on the backs of elephants and turtles.

asap regarding geography: my daughter was cramming for her test yesterday, and since she likes to study out loud, I ended up catching some of it... For example, she had to memorize the population density of Kazakhstan. And then there were all these tongue-twisting, pointless facts designed just to see if you can memorize them.

I mean, seriously. Kazakhstan, plus the names of every single island, river, valley, mountain, and even the specific crops and main industrial exports for every tiny little corner of Asia... All in 6th grade. Or ever, really. I'm speechless. Aside from the obvious ones...

Patrick Harris5 said:So, check out this song from a second-grade music textbook here:

A CHILD WAS BORN FOR US

American Church Hymnal

A child was born for us
Into the manger he was laid
Isus Milena, my God
I give you my heart, for I am yours.

Son of God the Father, and God himself
From heaven down to earth he came to us
Isus Milena, my God
I give you my heart, for I am yours.

A pure Virgin gave him birth,
And nursed him with her milk
Isus Milena, my God
I give you my heart, for I am yours.

The Father named him Jesus,
Sent him to redeem us all
Isus Milena, my God
I give you my heart, for I am yours

Appropriate enough??

We didn't ever teach stuff like that back home. 🤷

Honestly? No, it's not appropriate. And you know what else isn't okay? When those religious education textbooks claim atheists are just crazy or something like that. And the Department of Education actually approved all of it. Then you have these kids sitting in the same classrooms for everything else. You end up with some kid who doesn't follow the religion getting bullied. It sucks.

Mine didn't bother with any of those religious songs in school. Honestly, I’m actually a big fan of theology classes, but these are usually just focused on national holidays anyway. Plus, they don't really push the whole "God created the world" thing in the curriculum.
Religion classes in school - Megathread in Students & Teens ·
I’m actually really curious about this too. Unless things have shifted massively lately, those textbooks didn't have much controversial stuff in them aside from a few mentions of Christmas and Easter. And honestly, I’m such a stickler for the little details, I can't help but nitpick.

Around here, they’ve got one class stuck right in the middle of the day, and then they shoved the others all the way to the end, like during 8th period... I really feel for those kids. It feels like they're being forced to pull a double shift or something.

Richard Perez3 said:Yeah, it’s the same deal with my little guy, but I'm pretty sure it's just an automatic thing until you sign off on it again.
We haven't hit that parenting milestone yet, so I'm expecting them to hand over that paperwork then. Or maybe they already gave it to them and it's just buried in their backpack—I actually started carrying my own bag home today, so I'll go dig around and see.

Man, we’ve actually had a five-year streak of skipping religion class! 😀

Back in first grade, we just checked the "NO" box on one of those forms, and honestly, nobody ever bothered us again. They never even listed her in the directory. I actually think the hiccup is coming from the new substitute teacher—she probably just assumed instead of actually checking. See, instead of our amazing, brilliant (but super tough!) old teacher, we got this sub who hasn't even spent a single day in an American classroom. She’s been working forever, but in a completely different field... which is probably a whole other thing to vent about later...

So, I just realized that when they set up my daughter's digital school profile, they listed Religion as one of her elective subjects. Like, seriously? She’s got a meeting with her teacher this Monday, and I'm fully expecting that to be sorted out by the end of the day. Honestly, if it isn't fixed, I might actually lose my cool.

shadowhawk31 said:Where exactly did I say this reform should be designed so that Jason Ortiz5's kid has to clean up everyone's crap while the other kids don't even have to touch their own messes?

Everyone has to clean up.
I'm not going to get bogged down in the specific methodology or the "who goes first" logistics.
But the bottom line is—every single kid has to clean.

You forgot to mention which investigative method we're supposed to use to figure out whose crap is left in the toilet or whose paper is on the floor, just so we don't cause any "confusion."

And you think that teaches them anything wrong about life?

What do you honestly think awaits them later on in life?
Absolute justice?

Well, that's exactly why everyone needs to clean.

What's the point of acting all sweet and charming if everyone is forced to clean anyway?

That "sweetness" would only matter if the proposal was strictly that everyone cleans up their own damn mess.
And let's be real—if we actually tried to track down whose mess was whose without installing cameras in the school bathroom stalls, half these "sweet" kids would end up looking completely innocent to a bunch of teachers.

Hey there, what planet are you living on? There will always be people who cause trouble, play dumb (or have their parents swoop in to fix things), and walk away scot-free. Which just means some kids will always end up cleaning more than others.

Are you really arguing that we should bring this kind of system into schools just so kids realize the world is broken and corrupt? What does that even teach the ones who didn't have to clean?

I seriously can't wait for my kid to grow up and get as far away from this place as possible. ☕
