I honestly thought Happy Gilmore was such an incredible movie, from the opening credits right through to the very last scene. And man, Adam Sandler was just brilliant in it. Alongside Ben Stiller, he was one of those rare actors who actually knew how to pull off that genuine, heated anger perfectly. Unfortunately, as far as I'm concerned, that was the peak of his career. Ever since that film, it feels like he’s just been churning out one dud after another. Honestly, looking at the criticism here, I feel like, man, Bobby, you can definitely do better than that. It feels like everyone is arguing over a glass that’s only half full; the truth is, every great actor has that one standout performance where they truly pushed the boundaries of their craft, and De Niro has had several of those moments. Of course, he isn't going to show off his entire range in Analyze this because it's a comedy rather than some heavy psychological drama, but I’ve always been fascinated by how effortlessly he transitions into comedy—which is a notoriously tricky genre to nail. Then again, I’m starting to see the other side of things too; let's face it, the guy made a fortune, basically trademarked his signature facial expressions, and now he’s just riding the wave of his own stardom, with movies being sold primarily on his name alone, which is a reality of the business. Still, I have to say, Ronin actually caught me off guard in the best way, even though I went in expecting something more along the lines of Heat or those other established classics.

Some people might spend their whole lives picturing Robert De Niro as nothing more than a raging bull or maybe just a classic Best man, but if you ask me, he was absolutely phenomenal in his role in Analyze this (I haven't caught the sequel yet). I don't think I've ever seen that much self-deprecating humor packed into one performance before; it’s such a great way for an actor to show they can laugh at themselves. There's that one specific scene where he starts breaking down in tears, and honestly, it just cracks me up every single time... 👍 👋
If anyone can think of a movie where he actually gives a terrible performance, go ahead and try to explain why, if you can.

If you look at movies like Cetverored and Black Hawk Down from the perspective of their target audience—the people they were actually made for to satisfy a certain kind of populist appetite—I honestly don't see much of a difference between them. The only real distinction lies in the technical craftsmanship, or rather, how skillfully the footage is edited to pull at your heartstrings. It sounds a bit cynical when I say it out loud, but... just think about it.

Personally, I feel like any movie where Americans come out on top is just a piece of patriotic propaganda.
BUT! Any movie where Americans lose, or aren't portrayed as flawless heroes, is also a form of spin in its own way; it’s just designed to show that there's an internal opposition or a sense of 🙄. So, in the end, films like Apocalypse, M*A*S*H., Kvaka 22, Platoon (which is a tough one to call because Tom Cruise is in it 😁 😁 ), and Full Metal Jacket are essentially just different flavors of the same thing as Cetverored, Saving Private Ryan, or Titanic.

Comparing him directly to Richard Gere feels a little shallow to me—kind of like saying all American movies are the same just because they're made in the States.

I'm not saying that those deep historical dramas aren't better than some of the Hollywood junk out there, but even within a sea of mediocre blockbusters, you can find gems that are truly worth watching. The issue is that they're so commercialized... Oh, please, if all my friends have seen the exact same movie I have, then I don't feel quite so unique anymore. 😳
Maybe I should just say that I simply don't have the budget to force myself to watch all those big productions... 🙄

You included Mel Gibson and Brad Pitt on your list. Maybe you haven't noticed, but some actors are true sex symbols who happen to be incredibly handsome and actually have real talent. Then you get these guys who only get roles because they're incredibly good-looking, even though they can't act to save their lives. To me, that just feels like a total sham.
