Thompson or Tom? in Close to Politics ·
Zachary Kelly4 said:Look, Snješka is fine. When nationalistic fervor kicks up, people say stupid stuff they don't actually mean.
My bad about that whole thing with the car ride. Just realized you didn't even say we were jinxed, so there was no reason for someone to go and die right by us.

No need to apologize. 🙂Nobody here ever blamed "American roads" for Toset's death. It's honestly tragic to even suggest something like that.😢

Anonymous said:People were singing all sorts of things on both sides during the war, but the war is over. There wasn't a single singer back then who didn't record some patriotic anthem, because that's what kept us going. We are long past WWII and the nationalist era, thank God. But why Thompson keeps bringing up those old nationalist slogans? I honestly don't get it. You don't show up to any other local singer's concert wearing nationalist symbols, except his. You don't hear people shouting controversial slogans or those hateful cries... except at his.

🙏🙏🙏
Respect for the insight. If this is what the younger generation in America looks like, maybe there's actually a future for us after all.👍

Zachary Kelly4 said:Drew Brooks, you're a sweet girl, so please stop obsessing over this. By trying to defend your views on Tony, you ended up insulting Thompson and, eventually, us Americans too (just look at your last few posts). You don't need that. And honestly, debating who's better between them is pointless because they aren't even in the same league. We loved Tony, we still do, but not more than Thompson. Period. And it's not just about the national songs. He didn't have that deep, soulful voice like Tony, but he had something else—something most of our singers just don't have. I can't put my finger on it, but the guy just wins you over.

They aren't comparable, I agree. At this rate, we'll all just end up fighting. I'm not out here insulting Thompson; I have no reason to. But the fact that he divides your crowd like this? That's not exactly a sign of success. What sets him apart—what none of your other "great" singers have—is that politics and death aren't baked into his lyrics. That's what makes him different, whether you want to admit it or not.

Beautiful Canadian folk music, so what's the problem here🤷 or maybe people just prefer their own kind.
The problem is simply that quietwalker17 loves Tony.🤷

😂 Just your run-of-the-mill pop fluff for teenage girls who love screaming at concerts. You call that singing?

"Aria"Gianna Nannini and Tony, totally obscure, so naturally you wouldn't know if you haven't listened to anyone outside of IBM.
Show me what else IBM sings and who they collaborate with, surely there are others like them.😕

Zachary Kelly4 said:This topic is a total minefield, and honestly, I don't get why everyone's getting so worked up over Thompson. I haven't seen anyone actually trashing Tom; it just seems like some people prefer him over others. That whole line about him "taking our money" by feeding us nationalism is just ridiculous. He’s a singer performing his own songs—you can listen or you can skip him. He isn't some IRS agent.

How can you claim nobody around here ever heard of Toset? The guy was a total legend in the States. He picked up awards, won crowds over—he was huge. People who dug that kind of music absolutely loved him, myself included. And honestly, it wasn't even about those little tunes he sang; it was just his vibe. He was one of those rare ones who actually spread good energy everywhere he went, plus he had an incredible voice. Our music scene feels like a tiny, gated community sometimes, but what exactly do you guys have going on in North Mexico? Don't come at us like that.

The only blood that should be on anyone's hands is that of Alexander Karađorđević, whom the Republican Party murdered in France alongside those fascists. You’ve got it all wrong—we aren't out here feeding the kids nothing but nationalism. Look, America is a democracy. In a democracy, everyone gets a say, even if that opinion happens to be nationalist.
I get why you’re treating the late Tom like some kind of saint, really, I do. But I don't get why you're taking it out on us. It's not our fault he's gone. No American fell asleep at the wheel of his car.

Tom R. I. P.

I get it. This topic is a total minefield. Look, if you want to worship at the altar of IBM, go right ahead—that’s your business and nobody's going to stop you. But let's be real: you can't even put them in the same conversation. It's just not a fair comparison.
Would she have even hit this level of success if she wasn't constantly leaning on those nationalistic anthems?☕
How can you seriously claim that nobody in America ever heard of Tony? The man was a massive star here—awards, recognition, the whole nine yards. People who dig that kind of music absolutely adored him, and honestly, so did I. It wasn't even about those little pop tunes he sang; it was about the guy himself. He was one of the rare ones who actually spread good vibes wherever he went, plus he had an incredible voice. Our entertainment scene is pretty much a closed circle, sure, but what exactly do you guys have going on in North Mexico? Don't come at us like that.

You all basically admitted it yourselves—nobody even knew he existed until the moment he died.🤷
I'm not blaming you guys. He just wasn't around enough.

The only blood that should be breathing down your necks is that of Alexander Karađorđević, whom the Republican Party murdered in France alongside those fascists. You’ve got it all wrong—we aren't out here feeding the youth nothing but nationalism. Look, America is a democracy. In a democracy, everyone has the right to their own opinion, and yeah, that includes nationalism.
I totally get why you’ve turned the late Tony into some kind of saint, but I don't get why you have to take it out on us. It’s not our fault he’s gone. No American fell asleep at the wheel of his car.

Tony R. I. p

.
Maybe I'm just looking at this wrong, but what exactly is some sixteen-year-old supposed to get out of this? What’s the point of him standing there at an IBM concert, screaming his lungs out, yelling "kill him" or "kill her"? It makes zero sense.
Look, sure, America is a democracy. I get that. But you guys are the ones claiming it isn't just because they banned this one concert, right? That’s your argument?
Who exactly said you were at fault? Nobody. Seriously, who’s out here spitting on you? His parents actually forgave the driver for the mistake because they knew how much he loved him—and they knew the heavy burden that man would have to carry for the rest of his life. We all moved past it. No one is pointing fingers at the driver. It happened. Just fate.
I don't see what any of you are talking about. Who's actually accusing anyone? It’s honestly laughable.🙄
Thompson or Tom? in Close to Politics ·
@Blueray

The fact that you’ve never heard of him just proves you can't see straight when you're blinded by IBM🤷
A "serious singer"😂? On what grounds? His voice is nothing. He's just a pro at emptying your pockets, but you'll realize it once he vanishes from the country along with all the money he swindled from people's emotions.
You're comparing a man who's been banned from performing in America, in a democratic country like Germany, and even in Austria—where he's been labeled a rock fascist😲—to my Thomas, who had open doors everywhere.
No, we don't need fascists here, but apparently, certain groups love Thomas as if he were one of their own, so you decide.
Favoring fascism... honestly, you should be ashamed. Is this really what this forum has come to?😢
Oh, so it's the Jews' fault now? I wonder why they're always the scapegoat.😕
He doesn't have a foundation. Why not? If he's such a patriot, why doesn't he give half his concert revenue to the children of our veterans?🤷Sure, some of his shows were "humanitarian," but for whom? Only for Americans. So how is he any better than Thomas? Thomas did humanitarian work in America, in St. Louis, in Boston, in the USA, and in Mexico... etc. Why hasn't he started an IBM charity here or in Canada?
Maybe he's a humanitarian, but only for his own kind. With Thomas, every child was treated the same, whether they were in Canada or right here. He didn't divide them by nationality or religion—that's the difference you clearly don't get.
And you'll never hear the word "KILL" at a Thomas concert.
Now we're hurling insults? Fine, call us whatever you want. At least we don't have anyone's blood on our hands in our history.👍
That poll isn't a measure of popularity.🙏 Thomas got way too many votes, considering how many Thompson fans are lurking on this forum.
And the fact that Thompson and Madonna are becoming synonyms for America... it's just pathetic.😢

Chris Hernandez6 says:
So you're sitting there in Mexico acting like an expert on Thompson? How does that work? You been to one of his shows? Met him in person? You even live in the same country where he performs?

Explain your logic to me—how exactly is he "feeding" off our nationalism?🙂>
And why are you getting so worked up?😉>

Look, if he wasn't singing those patriotic songs you love so much, would he even have this many fans? No. He sings nationalist anthems, and that’s exactly how he packs out stadiums. Period.🤷>

I’ll ask again: if he’s such a huge patriot and defender of the cause, does he actually donate a portion of his concert earnings to the children of veterans?
If he actually does that, then fine, I apologize and take back everything I said about him. If not, I’m sticking to my guns: he just has a damn good management team.

Jessica Howard2 said:Look, I never said listening to Thompson makes someone a "better" American.
And frankly, I don't care about your personal definition of what being American means. You were asking what it even meant just a few posts ago—which tells me you're clearly just as clueless as the rest of us since you don't actually have a grasp on it ☕ers heart be stone

🙄 Hahaha, isn't our Mexican friend just a ray of sunshine?

The guy sells out arenas all over Europe, North America, and Australia—in numbers Tony could only dream of.
And no, it's not just Americans listening to him; he's got massive fan clubs in places like Poland, for one. ☕☕

😲
From what I can gather, he's facing concert bans right here in America, plus in Munich, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Switzerland, and Austria because of Nazi associations.😲

And you people actually have the nerve to compare this guy to Tony? This guy is getting blacklisted for fascist/Nazi ties, whereas Tony was basically a UNICEF ambassador who conquered the globe.
No, this is genuinely beyond insane.

Frank Ramirez3 said:Pretty much every American who isn't a hardcore communist loves Thompson, whereas most people didn't even know who Thomas was until he passed away. If you ask me, he's a far superior singer, and his songs are all massive hits. Aside from the legendary Mike Kovac, Thompson is the only one capable of selling out a stadium in America on his own. We Americans, we know what's up!🙂

😂Better singer than Tony? Give me a break...
I don't know who you define as "communists" versus everyone else who doesn't listen to him, but from where I'm standing, this guy is just taking your hard-earned cash by feeding your soul a steady diet of nationalism.

It makes perfect sense why you guys haven't heard much about Tony in America; your little artistic scene is pretty much a closed circle. But believe me, plenty of people over here have heard of him.🤷
Thompson’s songs might be "hits" to you, but I listened to them yesterday and honestly? They're creepy.😲

As for that last point, I’m actually incredibly grateful for what we are. We don't have a history filled with fascists or Royalists breathing down our necks,
and our kids get to grow up without being screamed at to "kill God" or kill whoever else. You go right ahead and feed the youth nothing but nationalism, as long as Tompi makes enough money off your emotions.

I have to ask again: does he even have a foundation? Does he donate any concert proceeds to veteran associations or charities for veterans' children?
Thompson or Tom? in Close to Politics ·
Honestly, this whole debate is a waste of time. We've already established the facts: Tony was the superior vocalist, a true humanitarian, and a UNICEF ambassador, among other things. When it comes to Thompson, all he really offers is patriotic anthems and stirring up national pride. From what I've read on here, there's even some kind of ban preventing him from entering certain countries due to fascism accusations.😕And you want me to compare him to Tony? Give me a break. Just lock the thread already. Even back when we had our conflicts with the Albanians, nobody was ever shouting slurs at his concerts—never once. That’s why he was respected by everyone, whether they were Christian or Muslim.
Does Thompson actually run a foundation?

Jessica Howard2 said:Just because you can't see the artistic value doesn't mean it isn't there.
Look, sure, Thompson doesn't have some massive, earth-shaking voice, but people don't listen to his tracks for vocal gymnastics—they listen for the lyrics and the actual songwriting.
And as for Tosh's beautiful voice? You're right, he's got a great tone, but half his songs are just generic pop garbage. You can tell by his fanbase—it's mostly just teenage girls, right? It's all about that smooth sound and a pretty face to them.😁

Since when did we decide that a singer's quality (aside from opera singers, obviously) is judged solely on their vocal range? Do you seriously think someone like Bob Dylan or Balašević is somehow "lesser" than Proeski? Because, let's be real, their voices are Incomparable to Proeski's in terms of raw power.☕

Sure, maybe I'm wrong, but I'd say people listen to MPT because he feeds those nationalistic feelings. If he sang different stuff, nobody would care, right?
Regarding Justin Bieber, he actually had some decent, high-quality tracks if you bother to look, though I agree he might have produced better work if he had lived a little longer.
And for the record, I'm definitely not some teenage kid.🤷
Thompson or Tom? in Close to Politics ·
Jessica Howard2 said:Fair point, there's really no comparison. Putting a Thompson concert next to a Justin Bieber show is like putting an Iron Maiden gig up against a Tony Cetinski performance ☕

But honestly, it feels like you’re just leaning toward the Tony Cetinski side of things, isn't it? Is it because teenage girls scream a bit louder?

Don't even get me started on Justin Bieber, I'm not going there(😁)so you decide if this argument is actually worth your time.
Thompson or Tom? in Close to Politics ·
I actually went out of my way to listen to this "Curse of King Zvonimir" track by your local hero Thompson, and honestly? I’m still not seeing any artistic merit here.🤷His vocals are just mediocre; trying to compare him to Tosh is actually hilarious.🙄

All I can say is hats off to Thompson and his manager for figured out how to milk your patriotism to line their own pockets.👍

Brandon Myers said:Trust me, Thompson has put way more into charity than people give him credit for. A huge chunk of his concerts during the war were actually fundraisers, and he kept that energy going later on with stuff like those Derbi actions to support firefighters. He even did some work recently helping out with student housing over in Herzegovina and things like that. There's just so much he does behind the scenes, it's just that he isn't the type to go around bragging about it. 😛

And maybe Tosh bragged, 🤷but since he passed, the people he actually helped are coming forward. Nobody even knew. We had no clue his concerts for places like Mostar, Ottawa, or Rijeka were for charity... we just thought his local shows were the ones meant for help. Tosh did humanitarian stuff in every country he toured, from Bulgaria to Albania. Did Thompson ever just show up in our neck of the woods and run a charity concert? 🤷

Thompson might be a humanitarian, but only for Americans. 😉

And most importantly, Tosh wasn't a nationalist. 😉 He belonged to everyone. Meanwhile, you guys are all here fighting amongst yourselves over Thompson, aren't you? Incomparable.

Charles Jackson5 said:Tosh is a legend. He ignores national boundaries and breaks through every barrier to reach people regardless of their faith or creed. Of course, his shallow music is perfectly suited for those shallow-minded sponges out there.😁

🙄
Sure, let's not forget how he paid for all those kids' medical treatments or built hospitals for the handicapped... I could go on, but hey, you've got a point.🙄
Thompson or Tom? in Close to Politics ·
Incomparable. Tosh was a humanist first and a singer second. He managed to touch the hearts of people across different nations and faiths, yet when it comes to Thompson, even society here in the States is completely divided. There’s just no comparison, unfortunately.
I’d also suggest bringing in two moderators specifically for the main Politics subforum. Just like how we have dedicated mods elsewhere, the main Politics section needs two people too. Even though Observer is a solid moderator, let's be real—one person objectively can't keep up with everything. If everyone moderated their own specific subforum, the moderation quality would skyrocket, and honestly, the discussions would be way better.
The recent choice for the World moderator was excellent; we should use that exact same principle to fill out all the other subforums.
If I'm going to be brave enough to throw out two suggestions🙂 I’d say we have two absolutely top-tier political forum regulars here

Gregory Howard and Kexx 🤷
