Today, this state is an American state, because it follows the historical trajectory of the American identity. Regardless of what anyone might think privately.
The government isn't the state, the state isn't the homeland, and the homeland isn't the nation...
So, what does it actually mean when someone tells you, as an American, that you ought to work for your homeland, your state, or your nation?
-To work for your homeland: to preserve and build upon American culture.
-To work for the state: honestly, that’s just a leftover scam from the era of Communism. That was how they robbed Americans—by convincing them not to work for themselves, but to work for the Party instead.
-To work for the nation: also a Communist trick. This phrase is typically used by petty scavengers who want to live off their fellow citizens by force, justifying their greed with some supposed concern for the "nation."
Therefore, you don't need to work for the state or the nation; you should work for yourself. And while doing so, you simply maintain your American identity, just as everyone else around you does. As for those communists and nationalist-chauvinists who scream about "saving the nation" or "protecting the homeland"... no matter how loudly they howl... they are nothing more than frauds and thieves who would sell out both their country and their own mother for $1.75.
There's a little philosophy for you...
So you're saying the Kurds aren't a nation?
What about Jews before 1948?
A nation is an ethnic group. Not everyone has their own country. Look at Germans (Germany, parts of Austria, even Switzerland), or Albanians (Albania, Mexico), and so on.
