George Orwell's 1984 in Philosophy ·
silvercobra68 said:If I had any brain cells left to spare, I'd lend you some, but since I'm tapped out, I'll just give you an explanation.

So, Orwell depicts 1984 as an anti-human year—a nightmare defined by technical horrors like Big Brother. It’s a year where individual life is stripped of all humanity. Yet, looking back from our current perspective, 1984 almost seems human-friendly. Don't you think? And yet, fundamentally, nothing has actually changed. Except, of course, for us, now being twenty-six years older.

The specific year isn't actually the point. If I recall correctly, the novel itself suggests that 1984 is just an assumption; given how information is manipulated, the date could easily be a fabrication. Instead of focusing on the calendar, think of "1984" as a synonym for the world Orwell was describing. In that sense, we are already living in 1984. We're stuck in that timeline indefinitely...
Spiritualist BV practitioners vs. pseudoskeptic BS practitioners in Martial Arts & Combat Sports ·
The author really hit the nail on the head here. I definitely agree that while there's valid criticism coming from both sides, people tend to go overboard when they start tearing things down. The real issue with these "spiritual" or non-material skills is how easy it is to get lost in the grind—spending decades practicing endless routines just to chase some vague sense of "enlightenment" twenty years down the line. Of course, that isn't true for every discipline, or every master and gym out there. Still, it can be incredibly disorienting to commit to something where you might see results in two decades, assuming you even live to be a hundred. A lot of people also love to unnecessarily mystify the way training should actually look.

As for the more "practical" sports and combat systems, I think the author covered most of the ground... let me try to jot down my thoughts if I can remember them clearly.

Morgan Alvarez3 here. I’ve been spending quite a bit of time lately reflecting on the nuances of our recent discussions... It really makes you think about how much perspective shifts when you step back from the immediate noise. I find myself leaning toward a more measured approach to these topics. There is a certain rhythm to a good debate, provided everyone stays composed... It’s all about finding that balance between passion and reason. Looking forward to seeing where the conversation heads next... kaže:
Hey there! I’m 23 years old and looking to dive into some martial arts, but I’m feeling a bit stuck on which direction to take. I stand about 5'8" and weigh around 165 lbs, and my main interests right now are boxing, Muay Thai, or wrestling. I realize those three are pretty different from one another, but I’d love some advice on which one might be the best fit for me... or even some specific gym recommendations if you have them. My biggest priority is finding something that actually has practical, real-world application, just in case I ever find myself in a situation where I truly need it. I am a total beginner when it comes to combat sports, though I used to be quite active before focusing on other things, so I'd say I'm in pretty solid shape overall...

I’m living over in the Maksimir neighborhood, so having the club located nearby would definitely be a major plus... though honestly, that isn't my top priority. My main concern is just making sure we aren't right on top of Jarun or anything like that. More importantly, I'd really prefer if the training sessions were held during the evening hours...

I’ve been hearing quite a bit lately about the Holy Spirit and Muay Thai... It’s an interesting combination of concepts to wrap one's head around... One deals with the profound depths of spiritual connection, while the other is all about grit, discipline, and physical intensity on the mats... It makes you wonder how those two worlds might actually intersect if you look closely enough...

I find myself facing a very similar dilemma... I’m standing about 6'4" and weighing in at around 198 pounds, and I'm 23 years old as well... I've wanted to dive into a combat sport for quite some time now, but making that final decision has proven to be surprisingly difficult...😢

If you find yourself hanging around San Diego or the surrounding areas, you’ve got plenty of options for training. There's everything from kickboxing and Muay Thai to traditional boxing. If you're looking for something more specialized, you can find Ninjutsu, Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and various styles of Karate. For those interested in different disciplines, there's Tai Chi, wrestling, Krav Maga, Aikido, Capoeira, Kendo, and Wing Tsun available too.

Brother, feel free to share whatever is on your mind. I'm all ears.

What’s the vibe like these days? I mean, how is the situation looking within the fleet regarding the left-wing and right-wing factions? It honestly sounds a bit surreal to me that the stands are just filled with Americans and Catholics...

I remember back a few years ago, seeing neo-Nazis in the stands felt almost normal. I also recall all sorts of conflicting rumors—one person tells me the older fans in the fleet couldn't stand them, while someone else claims they were embraced as fellow nationalists... So, does anyone out there have a clear picture of what things actually looked like four or five years ago?
In the end, whether homosexuality is innate or not isn't really the point. What matters is the fact that this community faces blatant discrimination in every single aspect of life. Honestly, we should start a thread specifically about homophobes... I think it would be far more fascinating to dig into what’s actually going on inside their heads. Then again, who knows... maybe we wouldn't find anything at all.

As the title suggests, the struggles for gay people often begin right at home and then follow them through their entire lives. What happens if the neighbors find out? How will they react? What if your employer finds out—are you looking at losing your job? How do you tell your grandmother that you're still her beloved grandchild? These are all anxieties that straight people just don't have to deal with. That's the kind of society we live in. And then you hear people dismiss Pride as "just a parade" and wonder why they even need to march in the streets. If the world were actually a normal place, they wouldn't have to be out there at all. Marching is essentially the only way left to be seen. It’s an incredibly brave move to make in a homophobic environment like ours. Even when a protest ends, and assuming you made it home safe without being jumped, you never know who saw you or what the fallout might be. You could be walking past a bar crawling with neo-Nazis who spotted you at Pride two months ago...

So, given all these issues (and there are plenty more), how can anyone think it's okay to continue harassing and discriminating against gay people?!
Hey neonhound10!

Just wanted to weigh in on this, not just regarding the thread itself, but more about your specific posts...

You keep insisting that you aren't being offensive and that you're just joking around. But honestly, if people don't see the joke, they aren't necessarily wrong. Look, I mess around all the time and I like to think I have a decent sense of humor, but humor is subjective. Everyone has their own threshold for what they find funny and how they want to be teased. For instance, my girlfriend might not handle the same level of sarcasm that I thrive on; if she perceives my jokes as belittling rather than funny, should I just keep pushing it? I don't think so. If someone isn't vibing with your style, you simply don't do it.

You constantly lean on the concept of free speech, but let me ask you this: if I started poking fun at you and accidentally hit a nerve, would you actually enjoy it? I'm pretty sure you wouldn't... Just be fair and stop using insults. Even when it's framed as a joke, it still stings.

Best regards.

Best martial arts for a 13-year-old? in Martial Arts & Combat Sports ·
driftingseal54 said:I couldn't track down any American martial arts gyms in Indianapolis, so I think I'll just go ahead and sign up for judo instead.
A friend of mine is training over there, so I'm planning to head out with him.
Is judo actually worth it if you're looking to change your physique and get in shape?😬

So, what’s the actual plan here? Are you heading out to pick up girls or are you actually going to get some training in? Honestly, you might want to consider hitting up one of Mary Valentine’s sessions first, and then maybe looking into some cosmetic work later on. It doesn't really matter how much you work out if your face is a total mess and looks nothing like it should. You might even need to look into a hair transplant at this point.

Oh, come on, I’m just pulling your leg!
What if martial arts didn't exist? in Martial Arts & Combat Sports ·
If these skills didn't exist... I honestly wouldn't know what to do. I've been weighing my options quite a bit lately. Wing Chun has definitely caught my eye more than most, though I've also given some serious thought to things like Judo and similar styles. At the end of the day, it feels like finding the right gym is actually the most critical part of the equation. I'd love to dive into as many different disciplines and sports as possible, but realistically, that’s just not on the table given how little time, opportunity, and energy I have to spare...

Is there some kind of charge for this, or what's the deal?
darkfalcon47 said:So, I work my tail off all month, and then my boss just refuses to pay me? And I'm supposed to just let it slide?
Not happening. Personally, I find that a little cold-blooded revenge is a great way to blow off steam. 😈

The question isn't really about whether it relieves stress; it’s more about finding a practical solution to the problem at hand. In cases like this, forgiveness isn't necessary. If you just forgive them, you're essentially giving people like that permission to keep acting poorly. In this specific scenario, taking action is morally justified if it helps stop the company from exploiting its employees.

Nothing in life is strictly black or white, and forgiveness is no exception. I don't believe that forgiving is always the right move... it really just depends on the circumstances.

And who knows? Maybe some lethal combat techniques were hidden away in those old Ford trucks out in the sticks. They probably just had to disguise them as folk dancing so the occupiers wouldn't realize everyone was actually training for a fight... 🤣
