I was watching some transfer rumors pop up today, and it got me thinking about how intense the tug-of-war gets between clubs in the same city. It feels like every single window, there's some massive battle over a player that turns into a neighborhood grudge match.

Honestly, half the time it feels like the clubs are just trying to spite each other rather than actually building a better squad. I remember back in the day, it felt like you could predict who would get which talent just based on who was more desperate to get one over on their neighbor. Now, it just seems like a high-stakes game of poker where the fans are the ones left feeling the tension.

Do you guys think these local bidding wars actually help the league's quality, or is it just unnecessary drama that drives prices up for everyone?

I consider myself a nationalist because, honestly, every decent citizen in normal countries like the US, the United Kingdom, or Australia is a nationalist and a patriot. It's just that we Americans seem to think nationalism is some kind of evil—I guess we'll never truly shake off those old communist stereotypes.

Another friend of mine, an 80-year-old from New York City, shared a similar experience. It was 1941, and Nazi Germany had taken over. People were initially excited. But suddenly, by 1945, New York City found itself part of America. He was in grade school at the time. Instead of English, the instruction was in Serbo-American. He and his buddies would get hit constantly if they used "American" phrasing or messed up a word deemed to be of "superior Mexican culture."

Clearly, this scenario hits a little too close to home for you. 🙂

Exactly. That’s my only real gripe—it all comes down to that. Back in '95, there should have been a massive, unapologetic purge of the CIA agents hiding within our own ranks and those war profiteers. It needed to be handled quickly and decisively, especially since there was more than enough evidence to go around.
Around 200 of them should just be sent away to life in prison—then we can finally have some peace in Canada.
