Broken wrist/joint in Health ·
Dana Booth77 said:Hi there,
I'm pretty new to this forum!
So, I took a bit of a tumble and ended up with a broken wrist. Now I'm spending my time scrolling through everything I can find regarding my
DIAGNOSIS😛of a distal radius fracture with displacement.
Since it’s summer, I’ve been hearing people talk about those lightweight plastic casts. My doctor didn't mention them for my specific injury, but the technician at the orthopedic clinic mentioned I might be able to switch to one after two weeks in a standard circular cast. Has anyone here actually gone through that transition?
Also, once the cast comes off, is physical therapy absolutely mandatory? Or is it possible to just handle the rehab exercises at home if everything seems to be healing smoothly?
Best,

It’s not strictly required, especially for younger people. You can usually just get some guidance from your doctor and work through the movements on your own. When you're young, you tend to bounce back without much of a fuss...

Bradley Kelly7 said:So now I'm wondering—could that pain have come from that sudden movement? Or is it something else? It's actually hurting a bit whenever I go for a run or stand up too fast...

Yeah, most likely just a pulled muscle. Try icing it, take it easy for a bit, and you should be feeling better in a few days...
Tattoo removal advice? in Health ·
See, when you're dealing with plastic parts, those custom jobs are way harder to fix than the ones made strictly by the book. It's because the color isn't distributed evenly deep down in the material...
Hospital bill nightmare! in Health ·
You can try filing a complaint on your own, but honestly, they probably won't take you seriously... you're better off having a lawyer draft a formal letter instead.
It’s pretty obvious she just has zero motivation. Honestly, I really don't get people who act like that, especially when they're doing it with other people too...

Let's be real here, I'd definitely go for a guy instead. 😉

Oh, no way, you can't have that 😁
Kate Collins67 said:Look, there are actually cases where certain institutions will demand you put up your parents' house—or pretty much any property you can find—as collateral for a mortgage within a specialization contract. And let’s be real, at the moment you're signing those papers, it's usually the parents' place because you almost certainly don't own anything yourself yet.

Jesus, are you getting this from a reliable source? Because if so, that sounds absolutely insane and totally illegal.

I haven't heard of anyone ever doing that before...
feralridge3 said:Thanks so much for the kind words.

I’d trade all that pride just for two big hugs and a good cry on someone's shoulder... 😢

I'm volunteering! Honestly, my shoulders have gotten so wide I can barely fit into any of my dresses anymore. Plus, I've got some great photos—say, maybe one with Blackwood? And I'll keep the beers ice-cold in the fridge...
jadesailor14 said:And they really lock you in for 10 years? That feels like a bit much!
But hey, knowledge is expensive, and everywhere you go, people get tied down when there's a huge investment involved.

At least you'll have the chance to make some extra cash on the side
if our Secretary's wild idea to scrap this actually happens.
I'm really not a fan of that plan!
And honestly, those on-call shifts are just awful—it's totally not right.

And yeah, they really do tie you down. You might be able to break those chains if you hire a killer lawyer or jump ship to another "firm" that's willing to buy out your contract.

Not every doctor gets the chance to run a private practice, though—especially the younger ones without a big-name reputation behind them. They're pretty much stuck.

As for those overnight shifts, it’s genuinely messed up. I've seen it firsthand, and it's just not humane. Not for the staff working, and definitely not for the patient showing up at 3 AM. It's nothing but pure adrenaline keeping those doctors going while they try to save lives on zero sleep.

I've had some pretty rough experiences myself... so I guess everything I wrote is worth considering...
jadesailor14 said:Honestly, I'm not sure how you're obligated
I know some people currently doing their residency or specialized training, but I haven't heard of anyone being tied down like that!

Well, if they catch you during your residency, you're basically on the hook to work for them—think twice the length of the program itself. If you quit, they technically have the right to sue you to claw back all those salaries and everything they invested in your training. Legally speaking? It’s a long shot. With a decent lawyer, you could probably fight it off... But you are signing that contract, yes. And it's not even a permanent position; they keep you on fixed-term contracts, which can make things like qualifying for a mortgage a total nightmare.
jadesailor14 said:Are you legally required to work for the government?
At least today, you have options!

I’d actually love to work for the government right now just for the job security. Sadly, I’m not exactly the best at what I do, and taking sick leave might actually get me fired.
Unfortunately, I didn't think about stuff like this 25 years ago, and now I can't really pivot easily.😁

I won't try to lecture you since you're clearly educated and smart—you'll figure it out on your own! 😉
Just look at the job listings below.

Ugh, tell me about it. I’d jump at the chance to work a federal job too; I’m really hoping things line up for me soon.

As for taking sick leave, that’s a total luxury I can't afford right now—I've pushed through just about anything. It's not that I'm looking for an excuse to stay home, but it's hard to pull ten-hour shifts when you're running a 101-degree fever. On the flip side, if I don't show up, there's no paycheck coming in to cover the bills. Luckily, my fiancé works for the government, so at least we won't be going hungry... 😁
Kate Collins67 said:You know what true professionalism would look like for about 60-70% of the patients walking into an ER? It would be saying: "You can leave now, and you'll be notified in the morning regarding the official legal proceedings being initiated against you for obstructing emergency medical services." Now *that* would be pure professionalism.

The reality is that these high-ranking officials often hold those positions because the rude, bottom-tier staff handle both their work and the work of those above them—leaving the higher-ups plenty of time to focus on "science" and "advancement" at everyone else's expense. Go to a major teaching hospital and look at the surnames of the veteran doctors versus the names of the newcomers. The young ones whose names you see associated with the older generation will likely be professors and PhDs in a few years; the other group? They'll just become more arrogant doctors. Just so you know how the game is played.

Ugh, honestly, I’d say it’s actually the exact opposite, at least based on my own experience (and not even as a patient)...
I don't think there's any harm in doing some heavy lifting. Just a heads up though—don't go overboard and overstrain yourself, otherwise you might end up dealing with those nasty overuse injuries that require ice packs to manage 😁
Tailbone pain relief? in Health ·
There’s honestly nothing worse than spending most of your workday staring at a monitor that’s sitting slightly off to the side. I think we might have just pinpointed one of the main reasons you're feeling so much discomfort. You should definitely try to get everything lined up straight... Just do a quick search on some ergonomics websites; a bad desk setup can cause some pretty nasty issues, but it’s usually something you can fix without spending a ton of money.
brisksurfer, I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. And to anyone else who’s been dealing with a passing recently that I might have missed... my heart goes out to you too. Honestly, it’s hard for me to even come on here sometimes because I struggle so much with patching up my own wounds...
Tailbone pain relief? in Health ·
Since we've ruled out the TMJ and your neck X-rays came back clear, there's a good chance the pain is coming from tension in your trapezius and those muscles running along your spine—basically where they attach at the base of your skull. Honestly, that’s probably better news because it means your joints are fine. You might want to take a look at your posture while you're working; check if your setup is actually ergonomic, like how high your monitor is or how far away it sits if you're glued to a computer all day... I can't really offer much more help than that 🙂

Hang in there, things will get better 🙂
Is it safe to take expired Tylenol? in Health ·
I think it’s best to do a quick sweep of your home medicine cabinet maybe two or three times a year. Just go through everything and toss anything past its expiration date. I’ve actually taken a few expired meds myself before—not Pfizer, obviously—and I never had any weird side effects or anything... But still, it isn't exactly the smartest move, even if nothing bad likely happens.
I've got students coming in tomorrow morning 😁, so I can hang out for a little bit longer.

Honestly, I've been so impressed with the vibe of all the votes I've seen so far 🙂
They just feel... totally normal.

You totally missed the most obvious point here... animals can't talk, so vets don't really have anyone to lose their cool with after fifteen years on the job... 😁

I guess I see your point, sort of. But honestly, owners tend to talk way too much and (sometimes) get a little too demanding...
Jacob Fox6 said:Well, honestly, you totally took what I said out of context since you only just decided to add that extra explanation now...

I mean, what do I even know about all that technical incompetence? I honestly can't say much since I'm not dealing with any of that myself and I really don't want to just sit here theorizing about it... 🤷I just know that I’m out here giving it my all, trying to learn the ropes and do everything by the book, but as for the rest of it... I honestly don't know... the only people I could really weigh in on are my classmates from college, because when it comes to actual doctors, I just don't have a clue... 🤷

And honestly, that’s perfectly fine. Just keep doing your job that way. If you hit a wall, just reach out to the more experienced folks for help and try to keep your sanity in this profession. Because—believe me—it's totally possible if you're a good person at heart...
